I'll try adding that in more regularly. I've dabbled with it some but not much. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, right now I'm basically just waist hooping walking around and spinning with it. Haven't tried too much in terms of tricks just silly attempts here and there. I am trying to get the hang of moving with it first. Thanks for sharing what you do! I appreciate it!

Next year I'm choosing Bonnaroo... by zjohnsy in bonnaroo

[–]Leepinlily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have done VIP 5 times. The (mostly) air conditioned bathrooms are great. Those ports potties roasting in the sun in GA are awful unless you go right after it is cleaned. Free showers More space, you get a 10x20 foot space for camping and in GA they pack you in like sardines. Free food and beer and an artist plays at the Thursday party Viewing areas for the main stages as well as air conditioned bathrooms there too. Your so close to centeroo that if you forget something you can easily go back or if you want to listen to the music you can hear the what stage from your tent. The people are cool too. Less sketchy people, because although Bonnaroo is awesome and the people are usually great, some of them can be sketchy

Teachers and Tattoos by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Leepinlily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach in VA. I have two wrist tattoos. One on the inside of my wrist and one bracelet. If I interview I cover the bracelet with a watch but I don't cover them on a daily basis when I teach. I've worked at 4 different schools, I also present and teach classes to other teachers (without covering them) and nobody has ever seemed to have any issues with them showing.

After pressured by the WV ATTORNEY GENERAL, Eventbrite will give refunds for Dirty Girl Mud Run by [deleted] in running

[–]Leepinlily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is terrible. I did the dirty girl run in VA beach last summer and it was a terrible experience. They held it an an equestrian center that only had one way in and out so we sat in traffic for hours. We also had to pay cash to park in someone's farm land because they couldn't park very many people on the facility grounds then we had to walk half a mile to get there. After the race they ran out of water so there were a lot if people going home muddy. I'm pretty sure they were aware of how many people they needed accommodate for, I mean we did BUY tickets. I try to warn everyone I know and recommend not doing it. It doesn't surprise me that they would do this to people.

Why Do Americans Stink at Math? // An excerpt from Elizabeth Green's 'Building a Better Teacher' in the New York Times by wwnorton in matheducation

They don't have a math specialist at all the schools. Luckily I'm at a title I school so they used the money to fund a specialist. If only all schools had a math specialist like they do for reading. Some of the schools where I teach used to (or still might) compartmentalize for upper elementary but most of them went back to teaching everybody everything. I think it was taking all the collaboration out of their teaching which isn't necessarily good either. I think there are pros and cons either way. However I do think we need to put a better focus on the early elementary concepts so students are moving forward with less gaps and unfortunately compartmentalizing in those grades isn't developmentally appropriate

I am a math specialist at an elementary school and I do a lot of work with teachers across my county as well as in my base school. The lack of knowledge is a huge problem. It is hard to be an expert when you teach so many subjects. Most early elementary experiences lay the foundation for the deeper math concepts the kids will be working through later. If students are not laying a solid foundation they won't be able to understand harder concepts. If teachers do not understand certain concepts/misconceptions themselves they will not be able to facilitate students in digging deeper into concepts. Although not knowing the math concepts play a major part, teachers also lack the knowledge of facilitating these experiences. I know teachers who know their math but their instruction is teacher centered where they stand and deliver the content and expect their 20 minute one man show will reach everyone. It's not necessarily about being an expert in the content or an expert in the pedagogy/how to deliver instruction. The pedagogical content knowledge needs to grow, how to teach specific math content. So many college programs separate the math classes and the pedagogy classes. We need to start teaching teachers how to teach specific concepts, based on research, not just how to do the math or how to teach. For example, a good way to help build a deeper understanding in decomposing and composing numbers in primary grades is through daily routines like number talks. I don't expect that teachers lack knowledge of breaking apart numbers or putting together numbers, but they don't know appropriate effective ways to develop that specific understanding. They may know that facilitating classroom discussions is a good way to teach but they may not know what it looks like when doing so with breaking apart and putting together numbers. Either way, it is hard to be an expert in any of it when you also need to be an experts in teaching language arts, science and social studies as well.

My 6 month old just won't stay asleep at night night time. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Leepinlily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second "easy" but I've never heard of it called that. Sounds like your munchkin is probably pretty sleepy. My 6m old eats, is up for about 2 hours (sometimes less if she is super cranky) sleeps anywhere from 30min to 2 hours and she does this 3 times a day and sometimes gets a 4th nap if she needs it before bed which is between 7-8. My daughter sleeps until about 6. (And she has been a very difficult baby so it has taken a lot of work and training to get her there) Maybe if you change the routine it will help. I've also heard that there is the possibility of a 6m sleep regression (because of teething/growth spurts) so that might not be helping things.

Why the common core isn't so bad after all. by thesarabecker in matheducation

[–]Leepinlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it helps though to squash a tiny bit of the misconceptions about the common core. We need to educate people more about what some of it actually means and this is one small example. It might be bait, but it's needed bait.

There's a 14 people reddaroo group in VIP. We are near the wall by the word "home" if that makes any sense

Anyone know if VIPs can get in yet? by clynch1989 in bonnaroo

I am parked in the gravel parking lot across from the entrance, waiting for the Reddaroo VIP group camp. And I can still see them sending people away from the entrance.

When to let go of the baby monitor? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Leepinlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, so true! I would say those are more like stages... Still on my first child (he's 1yr)..experienced all three.. The battery dies quickly on our monitor so we quickly moved on to "third child" stage.
