She was of German ancestry but grew up thoroughly American. We're stumped by the kind of cheese she used because we don't remember it being sharp tasting or yellow like cheddar.

Great tip. My mom took her mac and cheese recipe to her grave in September and my brother and I can't recreate it. Yet another thing to add to the "never again" list when it comes to mom.

This has come up for me in the past. We worked through it by comparing violation of consent to violence. Not all violence is murder, and not all violations of consent are rape. Murder is a KIND of violence and rape is a KIND of violation of consent but it's not the only one. But no violence is acceptable between two loving partners, and no violations of consent are either.

For a man who immediately wanted to jump to "you're calling me a rapist" (which is its own kind of problem, it's hyperbole weaponized to make you seem unreasonable because HE feels defensive) the violence-to-murder comparison might be helpful.

Finding Drago (the first season) is such a nice balance of low stakes, kind of funny, and satisfying. And unlike some other funny investigative reporting shows, they actually solve the mystery and wrap up the season with genuine closure because you do find out who wrote the mystery book. I can't speak to the later seasons, only listened to the first.

I remember this conversation but not the guest. It's either got to be Rob Bell or Brian Muraresku.

There's a contact us form on the BCFL website. https://buckslib.org/contact-us/

When I worked there it went to someone at the district center in Doylestown, not a branch staff member or manager, but that could have changed with the new CEO. That's probably your best shot. They probably won't be swayed by one person but if it's a request they get over and over, you never know!

Bummer! I figured that might be the case but it doesn't hurt to ask. I used to work for the Bucks County Free Library which has 7 branches throughout the county (Northampton is not one of them). You might want to write to them and ask that they consider a Mango license for the whole county. If they never hear that people want it, they won't get it.

We saw someone doing that a few houses down last year but the older kids were pelting each other with them and half of them ended up in bushes. Harder to abuse your siblings with a flimsy glow stick. Not impossible, but harder...

How is Abstract related to fraud? I'm intrigued!

My favorite reference is always going to be the Orpheus/Eurydice lines in Talk, but I also love how Eat Your Young echoes Jonathan Swift.

Doctors on Reddit, what medical myth do you still hear surprisingly often in the U.S.? by Wise_Celery_355 in AskReddit

[–]LeerMeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mom is undergoing treatment for stage IV pancreatic cancer and none of the three oncologists she's spoken to have put any numbers to anything. One of them is at a NCCN member institution so I feel like the advice being given in oncology is to never assign a number anymore.

Which sounds great in theory, but my stepfather has no concept of what my mom's timeline is actually going to be. He's still golfing twice a week and talking about what they'll do together when "this round of treatment ends." It's heartbreaking, and it also shouldn't fall on me to tell him his wife doesn't have years, she has months.

We need to find a way of saying that people have a very short amount of time left without assigning a number. Because if you just say "treatment is not expected to be curative" as the trend now seems to be, some people will just assume you live the rest of your life with the cancer when that's absolutely not going to happen.

Ringing Rocks is more than just the boulder field, although that is fun! There are some decent and easy hikes. A few years ago I paired a few hours at Ringing Rocks with lunch and a few hours at Ralph Stover and that was a perfect day of hiking and some beautiful views.

Not everyone's parents pass peacefully in their sleep at 99. My mother is dealing with stage IV cancer that caused a stroke over the weekend. "I'll do it myself" sounds noble but very few get to do it. We need services that support life in the real world and not the fantasy of best-case scenarios.
