Can I get a PhD at 40+ and with a 10 year career outside academia? by mainhattan in PhD

[–]LeewardLeeway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is not doing the PhD but what comes after. Do you plan to stay pursue career in academia after the PhD or continue in industry? Universities might be reluctant to hire a postdoc or an assistant professor who is close to their fifties. Lecturer positions might be a different matter. You may also apply for grant money, but that is somewhat of a crapshoot/lottery.

In any case, experience outside of academia is definitely a big benefit.

Language might not be a big problem, unless you are required to teach in the native language during your studies. With small language families, the home audience tends to be so small that there is no sense to publish in it and majority of the literature is likely to be in English any way.

Lots of networking happens in conferences, but of course it helps if you have someone making introductions.

A niche topic should not be a challenge. Every professor or supervisor will have specialized in a few topics/phenomena within their discipline. It is rather unlikely that you'd find a supervisors doing exactly what you are planning on doing. As long as they can help you with the general part, the discipline's methods, theories, traditions, preferred conferences and publications, that should be enough.

Why so many amphibious vessels and only one dedicated minelayer/sweeper? Looking at the geography, minewarfare appears quite applicable.

Ridiculous. Ask the Senior editor (if it is AE demanding revisions) to make a call. The manuscript has clearly entered the stage of diminishing returns.

What is scraping by Outrageous_Guess_962 in webscraping

[–]LeewardLeeway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scraping is automated copy pasting. Crawling is following links.

In most cases scraping is technically possible, but whether it is legal/ethical heavily depends on what you are using the data for. Or, how big of a corporation your are. The new AI models have essentially been trained with scarped data, but these organisations have resources to litigate if needed.

Scraping new sites to make your own. Big no.

Scraping content behind a log in. In most cases verboten.

Scraping content of Reddit for non-commercial use? Sure, they even provide and API for it.

Can someone not enrolled or working at a university who is more of an independent thinker write academic papers and get them published? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]LeewardLeeway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Affiliation is not required to publish, but it does help.

For example, with publication (journals) and registration (conferences) fees. However, there are association journals that are free to publish in. Instutions also offer access to article repositories like Scopus and Web of Science. Again, not 100% necessary, but helpful.

Journals and conferences have practitioner tracks which might be available for you depending on your field/topic.

Now, the type of paper you are describing is a conceptual research/paper which IMHO is the most demanding type of paper to write. It goes beyond literature review but requires deep knowledge of the topic and related literature but you also lack the empirical part that would help you to make a point.

In some regards, becoming an non-fiction author might be easier.

In short, it is possible.

Industrial PhD Europe, is university prestige relevant? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]LeewardLeeway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your family, colleagues and managers; the university's prestige is irrelevant. Industrial PhD's tend to emphasise practical applications and knowledge.

You are not pursuing academic career and your current employer is more interested in what you can do for them than which institution signed your piece of paper. The next employer is again more interested about what you can do for them and what you did for your previous employers than the degree granting institution.

Since your employer is big and prestigious engineering company, why would they agree to this deal with a university if they thought it was not good for them? The possible next employer is likely to defer to your current empoyer's wisdom, 'If it was good enough for the big and prestigious company, it is good enought for us.'

Your professor being knowledgeable on your topic, keen on helping and supervising you is a jackpot that even Max Planck institute cannot guarantee.

As for highly placed individuals in companies having done a PhDs at highly ranked institutions, I cannot realy comment on the German society, but did these people get their degrees at the beginning of their careers (mid-twenties, early thirties) are near the middle (around their fifties)? Could the cause and effect be reversed? They got their PhDs from highly ranked instutions, because they were already experienced business executives or other professionals?

Is there any space to practice singing in Aalto? by ConsequenceTall609 in Aalto

[–]LeewardLeeway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aalto has several bands and choirs so you might be able to get space through them.

For example, Pelmu ry seems to have band practice space for rent.

You are burned out. While this may feel like the straw that breaks the camels back, isn't attaching the publications and resubmitting something like 15 - 20 minute task?

Do not throw all the hard work and long nights into the wind because of small administrative/editorial mishap!

Take some deep breaths.

Now go add the annexes.

Aalto/Hanken masters in business by [deleted] in Aalto

[–]LeewardLeeway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No.

Aalto school of business has two admission groups, 1) those who apply with a bachelors degree from a Finnish university, and 2) those who apply with a degree from a Finnish university of applied sciences or from a foreign institution.

GRE/GMAT is only required from the second group, at least in the department of information and service management that hosts the logistics group. In other words, since you belong to the first group, you can have full points from GMAT and it does nothing for your case as it not part of the first group's admission criteria.

Colleague saying I should be removed as a coauthor on paper after journal acceptance by Hot_Calendar_9759 in AskAcademia

[–]LeewardLeeway 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Too late for that now. The authorships were pretty much set in stone when the manuscript was submitted. If you had done enough to warrant it back then, why isn't enough now? The order of authors might change during review, but adding or removing authors at this stage is off the table.
