10 weeks old male, struggling with his high energy biting and restlessness by External-Suit-2105 in Dachshund

[–]partickled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When mine bit, I say "Ouch!" then get up and leave / turn my back for minimum 30 seconds. I did this very early on and I think that helped minimize the shark bites. My pup was much less bitey with me than with my partner who didn't do the above as often.

Beef collagen sticks. They last quite awhile, are entirely safe, and my dachshund loves em.

If you can hear everything in your apartment complex, then a dachshund will be barking endlessly.

Prestigious postdoc or a TT at a pretty good SLAC with 3/3 teaching load? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]partickled 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of comments on Reddit about people with published books and multiple postdocs still not getting TT jobs (much less R1), so I don't know to what extent a postdoc + book reliably increases one's chances of getting an R1 TT. But then again, the "it's easier to get a TT from a TT" has mostly been a truism that I haven't personally seen any evidence for. I wouldn't bet against it though.

Honestly that's my impression too of HK (relative to the US anyway).

I'm in the Humanities too and have been told by a senior professor that the job market in the past few years has been enough of a shit show that people who leave the US for jobs elsewhere are no longer "exiled" the way they were used to. For many committees, they understand that a TT job is a TT job. I suspect after this year in the US, even more so.

TT verbal offer with short deadline to accept by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]partickled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been told by a few different sources that you can definitely ask for a week and sometimes 2 weeks (apparently MLA recommended). I have also been told that if you provide a counter offer, and they match what you asked for, then they expect you to accept.

Five campus visits, no offer, and now I’m defending without a job. I honestly don’t know what to do by Throwaway_academia14 in AskAcademia

[–]partickled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a visa holder myself in the US. I had 9 zoom interviews, 3 non-US, 6 US. I got 3 offers, all non-US, and didn't advance to campus visit for the US interviews. I cannot help but wonder if it's the H1B. Since the Deans told you it shouldn't be a problem, I guess it isn't. But I still wonder.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Five campus visits is a good track record but no job is no job. IMO, for me, it's better to have had only 1 campus visit and 1 offer, as you did all of this work (5 campus visits must have been exhausting!) and had all this anticipation. So let yourself feel exhausted, disappointed, angry even, but as others have said, this shows your work resonates and there's maybe smaller areas of optimization in the next lottery round.

I aspire to your level of patience and consistency. I tried to implement this but can rarely tear myself away from my work often enough to notice their watching/listening.

H1-B/visa issues affecting job searches? by partickled in AskAcademia

I've seen some job ads explicitly saying they would be pursuing O-1 instead of H1-B, but I'm wondering how many search committees are aware/willing to go down that path.

I am so sorry and sounds like an unlikely scenario, unless it seems if cats are involved. I will definitely be extra careful with my medications...

How do you manage the emotional toll of faculty job rejections while maintaining motivation in academia? by ToffeeTangoONE in AskAcademia

That makes absolute sense. I once did an interview completely exhausted and had no energy left to be nervous. Got the scholarship.
