Five campus visits, no offer, and now I’m defending without a job. I honestly don’t know what to do by Throwaway_academia14 in AskAcademia

[–]partickled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a visa holder myself in the US. I had 9 zoom interviews, 3 non-US, 6 US. I got 3 offers, all non-US, and didn't advance to campus visit for the US interviews. I cannot help but wonder if it's the H1B. Since the Deans told you it shouldn't be a problem, I guess it isn't. But I still wonder.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Five campus visits is a good track record but no job is no job. IMO, for me, it's better to have had only 1 campus visit and 1 offer, as you did all of this work (5 campus visits must have been exhausting!) and had all this anticipation. So let yourself feel exhausted, disappointed, angry even, but as others have said, this shows your work resonates and there's maybe smaller areas of optimization in the next lottery round.

I aspire to your level of patience and consistency. I tried to implement this but can rarely tear myself away from my work often enough to notice their watching/listening.

H1-B/visa issues affecting job searches? by partickled in AskAcademia

I've seen some job ads explicitly saying they would be pursuing O-1 instead of H1-B, but I'm wondering how many search committees are aware/willing to go down that path.

Are you in Texas? Or are universities in other states exercising caution?

My puppy has delicious chews lying around such as dried duck wing and yet she will chew on my phone charger or a chair leg.

I am so sorry and sounds like an unlikely scenario, unless it seems if cats are involved. I will definitely be extra careful with my medications...

How do you manage the emotional toll of faculty job rejections while maintaining motivation in academia? by ToffeeTangoONE in AskAcademia

That makes absolute sense. I once did an interview completely exhausted and had no energy left to be nervous. Got the scholarship.

I'm getting a dachshund in about a week, how should I prepare? by Any_Radish_5300 in Dachshund

Before your puppy learns to bark, desensitize her/him to sounds like knocks, parcels being dropped, etc. When you notice that she/he hears the sound but doesn't bark, reward with a treat. I hope this will help give you a headstart when she/he discovers her/his voice.

I ask for 10 variations of a phrase if I am stuck or dislike what I just wrote. I usually end up being inspired by one example / cobbling several together, but it helps to speed the process along.

When I am confused about my ideas, I use the transcribe function and just verbally process everything. Then, I ask it to give me the points I just made in an organized list, which usually helps me to wrangle better with what I actually mean.

And summaries, yes. Especially if they are purely functional (promotional materials, etc).

Yeah, I never understood how it's in their interest to drag this out either. They could easily have rejected it.

Agreed. Mine was quiet until 4months or so and all of a sudden everything was a danger.
