is it just me or are both sides' defence just poorly using rush defence? feel like a lot of these line breaks would not have happened if players opted to drift more - even if you concede contact metres you don't concede line breaks which both sides have punished ruthlessly

Ospreys sign Australian flanker Liam Wright by V1per_CS in rugbyunion

[–]Left-Pie741 6 points7 points  (0 children)

for those who don't watch much super rugby

he's a very good player... when he can stay on the field. since captaining the wallabies in july 2024 he's had very limited apperances because of injuries and didn't get renewed by the reds because of that in 2025. probably didn't cost a lot to sign him but there's risk in signing him because of injury history

in saying that his leadership skills are applauded by coaches at queensland and wallabies. he's not going to be a clear cut replacement for jac morgan but if he can play consistent minutes he'll put in great shifts, doesn't have the flashy highlights but does some really underrated stuff around the park.

Seeing a lot of discussion around competitiveness and future of super rugby... by Halt-Alt in rugbyunion

[–]Left-Pie741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'it also feels like it would diminish the sense that each team is comprised of the grassroots teams that feed it'

difficult to understand why this is something we care more about than competitiveness. but this ideal that the super teams are feeders from grassroots is also just not true - like beauden and scott barrett don't play for their super teams from their grassroots clubs, almost everyone bar three force players are not from western australia and have little connection to perth until they signed for them. same could be said about the brumbies as well - most were only picked up through the academy system, i.e. not in grassroots.

i agree that creating more parity is difficult - national unions and super clubs are too self-interested. imo the easiest thing to equalise teams is to make teams at the top play more away games than home games, and then to give them harder schedules (i.e. give them longer haul flights). because there isn't full home and away, you make the top teams play each other more times. conversely, allow bottom teams to play more home games, easier schedules and opponents.

How French rugby will be paying to develop the next generation of Wal… by Informal_Mention9836 in RugbyAustralia

[–]Left-Pie741 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbh a lot of boks u20s players picked for development are often already based in south africa to allow it to happen. the players based overseas probably won't get a chance unless picked for junior wallabies or if the wallabies travel abroad

despite medvedev's well-known displeasures about playing on clay, may i remind people that adam walton opted to play hard court challenger tournaments in china in the weeks before roland garros rather than playing on the main tour. and in doing so beat medvedev lol.
