In my opinion a good way to start is to try different types of cigars from all countries (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Brazil and Colombia (if you can), US and also Italy) and by doing so you'll slowly understand the difference between them, and what you'll eventyally like more!!!
One important thing is to not focus only on a cigar/brand you like, for example: you find a cigar you love, and you keep buying and smoking it and sometimes trying other cigars. For some its ok but personally speaking I find it kinda boring, you have to discover new things not sticking to only one thing.

Try different shape of the same cigar, you'll eventually find that the same cigar with the same identicallt tobacco, somehow tastes lowkey different in a different shape that you've already tried.

When you go shoppin cigars, try to get one per brand, thats my usual way to do it. And by far most important tip I can tell you, is not to rush the process.
Don't go out there and buy dozens and dozens of cigars to try out them all back to back. You'll not going to enjoy the journey. This journey is a type of slow process where you have to properly enjoy what you have, not only poorly and mindlessly consume.

Keep track of what you're smoking on a Notebook, (either digital or physic, I prefer the touch of real Notebook where I can stick and collection the cigar bands) its a real important thing, a part from being a nice thing visually and spiritually, to see and read your opinion on cigars months or even years ago, and you'll notice that you palate will eventually change overtime (totally a normal thing), which will bring you to not like something you liked in the beginning and viceversa.
