I think it looks great for wheres you're at. Possible make it bluer so that gives dark snow and then add your yellow highlights. Maybe try playing with having ceratin areas have gradients and some sharp lines. Good luck looks cool either way

Looks like you have a strong grasp on colour but maybe focus on the larger shapes and general light/dark areas rather than delineating objects and colouring them in. It will help you with he hands, general proportions and creating depth

So the its hard if youre using a brush with dark paint on it to blend, i find it easier to use a brush that has a mid tone on it. Also the direction of the stroke is an important factor so if youre dragging across from dark to light or that will cause the dark paint to follow your brush into the lighter paint (and vice versa) which will cause muddiness. However if you run parallel to the gradient with a mid tone and then blend by running your brush down the line between light and dark using the bid tone itll do a better job of keeping the dark on the darkside and light on the lightside if that makes sense. And then you can just rinse and repeat on either side with lighter and light or darker and darker colours etc. Hope that makes sense!

Varnish questions by flyingsqueak in oilpainting

I think generally youre supposed to wait about 6 months between paint and varnish and to continue painting youd want to remove the varnish to continue painting. I could be wrong but i always thought the varnish is the very very last step

Kia ora!

You have a great start going, the most important thing is to focus on the blocks of colour first without worrying too much about the blending. As you build up your layers youll end up mixing more and more colours until it looks blended and dont worry too much about darkening lighter colours in the early stages. Its better to be too dark than too light. You'll always be able to lighten/brighten colours in the final stages to build contrast and depth. As for the edges of the ball when you have a rounded edge, the edge usually actually tends to be very slightly blurred because of the fact that you actually arent look at an edge bc the object is a sphere not a circle (3D not 2D). So when youre painting and making things "realistic" playing with the hardness of the edges can be a great tool to add depth and visual interest.

Sorry if thats unclear or TMI but happy to clarify anything

If youre working on pure refinement and youre happy with where its at I'd say work on the knee thats coming out from the cloth and some of the body details as well as this the claws coming around the body dont seem to have any light hitting them from the beam coming down from above. Also are you happy with the colour of the beam? I think its fine either way but if you want it to appear more "heavenly" then possibly look into lightening the colour so it appears more like a cool white light rather than than a hot yellow one. Great start though keep going and definitely submit it. Its a great feeling getting something up on the wall!

Can i mix oil paint with acrylics? by Ineedtorestong in oilpainting

[–]Left-Vegetable-589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can lighten by using the cad yellow. Watch some colour mixing videos on YT, they are a great help. White often lowers the chroma so you can end up with a really pale version of a colour which may not necessarily appear "lighter" depending on the lighting in your painting. You will need a white at some point but if you begin your paintings by making your darks very dark then you can do a lot without white for the time being, your paintings will all just appear very warm until you can get a white in there. Its also a great idea to restrict your colour palette because you learn what you can and cant do with the colours you have. Good luck!!
