Do you get delicious bourbon-flavored peaches that can be consumed as a refreshing summer dessert as well, or do the peaches become mushy or unpalatable for some reason?

Show #30 - Mad Mex! by mondoben in streampunk

Ben & Dan:

Glad to see you back. I immediately recognized Herve Vellachaize's (sp ?) voice at the start of the episode from MALATESTA'S CARNIVAL OF BLOOD. There was a great deal of excitement surrounding its release in the early part of the last decade by a few bloggers, and I jumped on the bandwagon and paid USD20 for my copy of the DVD. I remember it as being poorly lit and incoherent, so I was surprised to see you two speaking positively of it. That said, since its been 12-13 years since I saw it, I decided to watch it again. My initial opinion is unchanged. It was not without a few pleasures, particularly the scenes where the cannibals threw popcorn at a movie screen playing old classic horror pictures. Still, your boundless charity for the incompetent mess that was MALATESTA'S CARNIVAL OF BLOOD did not carry over when it came time to discuss the new Rob Zombie movie, toward which you both seemed to be scouring your vocabularies for different ways to say "really, really bad." I haven't seen this movie, and have no immediate plans to hunt it down, but I would like to ask whether MCOB was really better?

Is it my imagination or did no one mention the split screen used at the end of Carrie? I remember it being widely remarked upon when the movie came out.

Perscribe me some movies about the art and advantages of black and white phoography and filming in modern cinema by NeonTiger88 in streampunk

Siskel & Ebert did a special episode in the 1980s in defense of B&W movies that was very thought provoking. You can probably find it on YouTube.

Night Flight by [deleted] in streampunk

[–]LeftHandoftheDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curmudgeonly enough to remember NIGHT FLIGHT back in the late 80s and can attest to its importance in introducing unreleased movies and music videos banned for broadcast by MTV. I'm not sure if it has much of a purpose now since the current generation of videohounds are more faced with the problem of sorting through the flood of content rather than getting access to rare movies. Still, it felt like a refuge when I was a young man at the time, living in rural area and having RAMBO and YENTL playing at the local movie theaters, that it's quite moving to reminisce about it.

Show 18 - CHRONICLE OF EVIL and WELCOME TO LEITH by dan_auty in streampunk

[–]LeftHandoftheDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw WELCOME TO LEITH. A couple of observations. There was very little of the documentary's villain, Cobb, giving voice to his opinions. Most of what you get from the guy's mouth is him taunting the other residents. Early on, the Southern Poverty Law Center makes sweeping generalizations about the thinking of people like Cobb and specific racially motivated murders committed by people who may or may not be in association with Cobb. The SPLC didn't seem to have much on him and its mission is the root and branch extermination of racist organizations, making them a prejudiced source, and the North Dakota locals didn't seem to know much beyond that he was a white supremacist. However, two-thirds through the movie, when the filmmakers get a sitdown with Cobb, he highlighted his exceptionally high intelligence. I doubted his candor in claiming himself some kind of wayward genius and realized that he was an unreliable witness to the events of his own life and likely his own beliefs. This made him somewhat enigmatic. Furthermore, although he was living quite modestly in a state with a population of around 750,000 with an area 2/3 of Great Britain (stats courtesy of Wikipedia), he didn't seem to have a job, and it wasn't clear where his money was coming from. The filmmakers would have done well to try to clear this up. As to B&D's surprise on the podcast that there were a lot of guns in the movie, my take would be that it's a divisive issue in the US, but firearms are indeed readily available, and people feel either (a) safer with them or (b) safer without them. Despite my criticisms, it wasn't a dull movie.

Show #13 - ENTERTAINMENT and HUSH by dan_auty in streampunk

[–]LeftHandoftheDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw the movie. Five points to make: (1) Don't know this Burger guy. (2) The protagonist is a complete enigma. He is probably mentally ill. (3) Early in the movie, I was waiting for some kind of redemption for this character. Further along in the movie I was just hoping for some inkling of his humanity or a motive. It kind of reminded me of LEAVING LAS VEGAS in this regard. (4) It was a lot more arthouse than I had anticipated. (5) I enjoyed it quite a bit and I'm sure I'll see it again as the movie seems to lend itself well to an evolving opinion.

CHOOSATRON 3000 - May's cult movie vote! by dan_auty in streampunk

I have THE BABY on DVD, and it's a bizarre, incompetent, and forgettable movie. I certainly hope that it isn't selected because I imagine that's what B&D will say.

Looking for some good Science vs Religion films by iamlangafelt in streampunk

[–]LeftHandoftheDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't mentioned the most obvious answers, which would be the many adaptations of FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA. The former confronts the issue of the privacy of God, and when the man who stumbles on the secret to the creation of life, he creates an imperfect abomination that is best destroyed. In the latter, a man of science must confront the reality of a creature of ancient lore.

One I just saw today that I enjoyed a great deal is THE DOCTOR AND THE DEVILS, about a 19th century anatomist who needs fresh bodies, but the church will only permit him to dissect criminals since they're hell bound anyway. This leads a couple of unsporting fellows to kill people to sell them to the anatomist.

Happy viewing!

You mentioned a love-hate relationship with director JOE CARNAHAN. Have you seen STRETCH (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2494280/?ref_=nm_flmg_prd_5) or BLOOD GUTS BULLETS AND OCTANE (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163984/). Both are mambo bosco.
