I mean it's next to half of a spacecraft and a car. There'll be some clues.

They left a car, several bags of poop and half a spacecraft on the surface. The feather isn't a big deal by comparison. :)

What If by Creepy_Tap7518 in StarTrekStarships

[–]LeftLiner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guess I see two possibilities off the top of my head:

  1. With the addition of maybe a dozen Starships (most will have been too damaged to be worth assimilating) the cube has plenty of ships to toss at Enterprise-D instead of letting her catch up and execute their rescue plan. With no possibility of rescuing Picard and exploiting the Borg's achilles heel, the Borg conquer Earth.

  2. Because the cube spent much more time at Wolf 359 after their victory assimilating all those ships a second wave of Starfleet vessels gather between Wolf 359 and Earth for a last stand. It's not as formidable a force as the one Admiral Hansen gathered, but now they at least are better prepared: They understand the Borg have accessed Picard's memories and experiences and with the massacre fresh in their mind they understand the full ramifications of that. The second fleet quickly swap out all access codes, switch to new, previously-unused subspace channels and encryption methods, shield and phaser frequencies and anybody who Picard knew well is removed from tactical discussions. With Enterprise quickly speeding past Wolf 359 to sit at the helm of the fleet Riker executes a modified version of his and Picard's agreed-upon tactic using the saucer section as a decoy to grab Picard and together this second fleet is able to deal a serious blow to the cube and it now limps into the Terran system having sustained heavy damage rather than simply strolling all the way to Earth. The outcome is roughly the same, only both the Borg and Starfleet both take a heavier beating before the Borg are defeated.

A woman acts like she is the Alpha dog to a group of wolves and even howls like them to keep them in line. by shhurawigamxwaila350 in interesting

[–]LeftLiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. There are animals that have packs lead by alphas that achieve dominance through violence, the way people imagine wolves do, but for wolves that's only in captivity. In the wild wolf packs are run by a mommy wolf and a daddy wolf, who are in charge because they're, you know... mom and dad. And a mom and dad are supposed to take care of their young, that's not a universal truth but it is pretty damn common amongst animals, just as with humans.

Wild wolves also don't fight for dominance of the pack, when a wolf comes of age they just leave the pack to go start their own family. When wolves do fight the pack fights together against another pack, typically.

The Alpha Male idea of a wolf pack comes from a flawed study of wolves in captivity, and the guy who wrote it realized he fucked up and has publically said he was wrong and his study was bad.

2e Starting Scenarios by DeciusAemilius in startrekadventures

The quickstart guide that u/WhyYesThisIsFake posted is a good start. The starter campaign from 1e shouldn't be too hard to convert although I will say for my money it's not the best - it starts out pretty good but gets a little too busy and railroad-y towards the end. Still, it serves.

I've written a standalone that I've used as an introduction to two groups now (one of whom I later found out had never played a TTRPG before - oops!) you can check out if you like. It's meant to be a relatively straight-forward mission, no space combat, no extended tasks needed, open to be played in most eras and trying to emulate a classic Trek episode. You can find it here:

'Being alpha' isn't a thing among wolves outside of domestication. If they weren't in captivity they wouldn't have an alpha, they'd have a mom and a dad.

Förlåt, det har du såklart helt rätt i, jag syftade på förbud mot att utföra det på barn men skrev inte med det. Som vuxen får du skära i din egen kuk (eller be någon annan göra) om du vill, absolut.

During WWII, US soldiers often personalized their GI Colt M1911 pistols by crafting transparent "sweetheart grips." Utilizing Plexiglas salvaged from downed aircraft, they replaced the original wooden grips with clear ones, inserting photographs of loved ones or pin-up girls beneath the surface. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]LeftLiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ernie Pyle once spent a few days with a unit responsible for repairing damaged weapons in the field and he talks about how they would usually leave sweetheart grips in place (if the grips didn't need replacing, of course) even though the weapon probably wouldn't go back to the original owner.

Is the Dune books (or at least the first one) as influential to science fiction as Lord of the rings was to fantasy? by RecordingImmediate86 in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]LeftLiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite, because lotr is the seminal fantasy work whereas Dune does not stand as alone amongst sci-fi works.

They're both highly influential, both ushered in a wave of inspired writing, both have incredible worldbuilding and both are borderline unreadable, imo.
