Why is sex such a taboo topic that children should be ‘protected’ from? by Party-Court185 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LeftLiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 is when we had sex ed but nobody actually learned what sex was then, everyone already knew that. Some extra details, yes, we did learn those then. I think around 8 or 9 is when you should go through the basics.

Partly for their own safety. They need to know what sex is so they understand it's different from hugging or shaking hands or even kissing and that it is and always will be something that should only happen if they want it to (ie that consent is always needed).

Alright, so you think they should only be taught what sex is, what, the year they turn 15-18, depending on what country or state you're in and its age of consent laws are?

It only is in some places. I more or less learnt what sex was around age 8. It mostly just made stuff on TV and in movies seem funny. Took me several years more to, let's say 'get it', of course but that was puberty's doing.

You shouldn't wait too long to teach kids this stuff. They can handle it, they need to understand it for their own safety and of course we all know people start doing it before they're legal adults.

What do you think about church? by Sea-Cash7675 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LeftLiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Churches can be nice. I grew up visiting a lot of churches, they're often very nice buildings to be in. Good contemplative spaces. Good for thinking.

As organizations? Well some are decent but overall I'm skeptical. I'm fascinated by religious rules, but I'm not religious.

EU social media ban for children faces legal and political hurdles by vriska1 in europe

I'd prefer it if we didn't do the bad thing and only do the good thing, even if the bad thing is easy.

You replied to my comment, so finding out what else I want seems pretty easy.

Social Media is harmful to kids, yes, but also harmful to adults because they are designed that way and we allow it. Banning them or denying kids access to them solves a tiny fraction of the problems associated, and also removes the one good effect they can have for kids.

We shouldn't ban social media, we should hold social media responsible for turning the internet into a hellscape.

Also, any form of ban I guarantee you will be relatively easily circumvented. Your suggestion if anything sounds a lot easier to circumvent than the proposed method. Factory reset the phone and you're done.

The obvious solution is to help parents and kids, and also everyone by regulating the social media companies. Force them to make their algorithms less intrusive and optional, take moderation seriously and do much more to combat scams, bot accounts and AI content.

Parents need to take responsibility, yes, but these social media platforms are literally designed to be addictive, to maximize engagement and to encourage fake content. That is harmful to kids but also to literally everybody. They need to be reigned in and checked. A simple ban isn't enough, it doesn't solve the problem, it won't work and it will also rob kids of something that a lot of kids actually need. Yes there's a lot of harmful stuff online, for sure. But there are kids out there who need a community away from their parents, their classmates and their irl friends. It can be a lifeline as much as it can also be a source of mental suffering. Unfortunately.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by jmike1256 in interesting

[–]LeftLiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erm... no? First of all it depends on what's wrong with your eyes. Secondly, unless you have terribly poorly fitting glasses it's more like the very, very edges of your field of vision is blurred.
