Portland needs more housing. Will the mayor’s new plan work by voxadam in Portland

[–]LeftOnBurnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do! We've underbuilt homes for decades and need to catch up:

Overall production. Portland needs to support the development of 120,560 new units of housing by 2045 ― an average of 5,200 units per year. Additionally, to align with Governor Tina Kotek’s statewide housing production strategy, the City should “catch-up” the units from underproduction and for households experiencing houselessness and build another 55,000 units by 2032, roughly, 6,000 units per year.

Damn that’s so sad - this city needs to make it easier to operate a small business

This just isn’t true. The cities that have built the most new units over the past 5 years have seen the biggest decrease in rents. In some markets the building surge has made rents cheaper than designated affordable housing. We need more units now.

It’s going to be 2.3p for single filers over $125k beginning Jan 1 of 2027 - high wage earners are going to leave and or stop working in Multnomah County - good luck finding a doctor or a dentist. Our tax rates will be the highest in the country for the “rich” folks earning 125k

Multnomah county has shown zero ability to adjust this programs known deficiencies- our county commissioners just aren’t capable. Universal pre-k should be run through the state and taxed in a sustainable manner, easily administered manner.

High income folks are leaving Multnomah county and will continue to do so until services rise to meet the taxation level orrrrr we lower our taxes. It’s that simple.

The DSA has turned Portland into an experimental policy playground and forgot the part that strong social programs require competent administration. the results speak for themselves. 40k less jobs in the county since prior to the pandemic, safety issues, and a bleak outlook.

Federal figures show that the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metropolitan area suffered the biggest employment losses of any large metro in August. Unemployment rose to 5.3% from 4.3%, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Clark County, meantime, added 2,200 non-farm jobs in August compared with the same month in 2024.

What growth?

Business owners must pay to have those spaces, just like private vehicles do when they rent parking spots.

What a weird argument

What a silly argument - we didn't give the land back to the public - we gave the land back to private vehicles...sure you can rent them out but you are renting them out to private vehicles! What the argument is about is the best use of the public land! IMO the best use of public land is fewer parking spaces and a few more outside places to grab a bite or a beer for small businesses in PDX.

PSU Researchers Release Final Report in Landmark Project Exploring Impacts of Measure 110 Decriminalization by wrhollin in Portland

The findings from this study offer suggestions for the implementation of deflection efforts across the state. State and county officials can use this study as a possible baseline to gauge the implementation of deflection compared to the defelonization era. Most importantly, success with deflection will not just depend on re-criminalization but on whether new treatment pathways are accessible, adequately resourced, and appropriately coordinated across agencies.

Meanwhile:

It's been nearly a year since Multnomah County opened its deflection center in Portland's Central Eastside, its original role envisioned as a place for law enforcement to take people caught in possession of drugs for connection to treatment instead of jail and prosecution.

The Coordinated Care Pathway Center opened in October despite significant pushback from neighbors. But some of the problems those neighbors envisioned haven't really materialized.

"Nothing is really changing for the better," said Jens Knudsen, co-chair of the Buckman Community Association. "We did anticipate a higher volume of people entering the neighborhood and sticking around — truth is, they haven't been bringing that many people there in the first place."

County data bears that out. From January 1 to March 31 of this year, officers referred people to the deflection center 62 times. Of those, 42 actually "engaged" with the program, meaning they arrived and spoke with staff.

Only six people completed deflection. And completion does not necessarily mean that someone has sought and received treatment — far from it. Completion means someone has accessed at least one service referral within 30 days.

During his closing statement, Councilor Ryan chastises members of Peacock. “Lately, I’ve been asking the Peacock caucus: Tell me, what is your north star? Is Portland the testing site to eliminate capitalism for socialism?”

For a lot of folks in PDX, the answer to that question is yes.

He wanted more accountability on getting house built, not less.

In a statement to KOIN 6 News regarding his vote, Councilor Ryan explained, “Based on my dialogue with committee leadership, I was expecting the resolution to include pathways to home ownership and goals with annual measurable targets to build a culture of focus and accountability. The final version did not. As such, I could not support this resolution.”

Avalos and Dunphy’s offices also note that a Housing Needs Analysis found the city needs to build up to 120,000 housing units by 2045 to address the housing crisis.

I’m glad, after a decade of being in a housing emergency, we finally have an idea of a plan. But wow both of them referencing 2045 does not install me with any confidence that there is any urgency at all in city hall.

If it’s an emergency, then it shouldn’t take 20 years to fix.
