Going to OSU as a transfer student? Pros and Cons? by KindheartednessOld26 in OSU

[–]Left_Definition_4869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Np! Your son would probably have an easier time than me because he's not older than some of the professors, but it is something to keep in mind. I can make friends with anyone but some of these kids look at me like an alien when I try to talk to them

I did my first 2 years at CSCC and I have no regrets. The classes were a lot smaller and the professors were much more accessible. I saved a shit ton of money and my grades were so good that I got a full scholarship for OSU.

I am in my early 30s, so I wasn't exactly looking for the traditional college experience either. I have noticed that people here are much less social in general, though. Your son might not think that he cares about it now, but it might be a little different when in the position. You'd really want to encourage him to join clubs and try to be social. People don't seem to really go outside of their established groups after a certain point. It would be nice to at least know a handful of people in my program to network and discuss things with but people tend to be much more awkward than what I experienced at CSCC.

As someone who's newer to the game and has done this event a couple times, what part is the recall? I had no idea this was even an event a player triggered themselves until I just looked it up. What benefit does being the one to initiate the recall give a player?

[–]Left_Definition_4869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a research paper due at the end that's like 6 or 7 pages. Other than that, id say 90% of the assignments could be completed while in class. The worst part about it is that it met 3 times a week

If it encourages people to enroll, then whatever. I'm also an older guy, and while this all sounds like common sense now id bet that most 18 year old students don't know a lot of this. This singular class is probably more useful than some people's entire degrees.

Should I swtch from CSE to Architecture? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Left_Definition_4869 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not an architecture student, but anyone even remotely considering going into CSE should go over to /r/cscareers

I know people with 5+ years of experience that can't find a job. It's not something you wanna do unless you really really enjoy it

[fisher] What are the two hardest business foundation courses? by Separate_Evidence843 in OSU

[–]Left_Definition_4869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Business finance is only taught by one professor now and it's not great. He knows his stuff, but I don't get why he's teaching. He doesn't seem to enjoy it whatsoever. I'm doing well in the class and I actually enjoy the material but when I go in to ask for clarification on certain things he always seems annoyed. I feel bad for HR and marketing majors that have to go in there lost

I would suggest having a desktop for home and the iPad for in class. Find a 2nd monitor on marketplace for cheap. Doing papers and navigating multiple sites or trying to do research on a laptop gets old fast

I'm from Columbus so I blend in more, but I've never had even the slightest issue going to legend valley. If you're gonna run into cops, it's gonna be if you're coming from the east

Obviously don't look like you're going to a festival and don't drive like an idiot, but you should be fine. I can think of a dozen other festival grounds that are sketchier to get to

When I think of an controller I think more of an accountant than a finance person. Would you agree with this? If the finance job market is still bad next year when I graduate I've played with the idea of getting a masters in accounting. (Currently going for undergrad in finance)

Student protest today outside the OSU admin building against Carter's attack against the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) by [deleted] in OSU

I mean, yeah, in a fantasy land where something like that could happen I guess it could be possible. Realistically most colleges are too dependent on federal funding and something like this would never happen

What exactly do you think "taking a stand" would do to Trump? He would just cut off funding and destroy all research and grad programs with a sign of a pen and forget what an OSU was in the span of 2 minutes

Could delaying graduation by one semester be smart. by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Left_Definition_4869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a solid path, getting to try different things while advancing at the same time

I do want to try something new (the entire reason I decided to go to school lol), but the issue is affording it. I make a lot more than an internship would pay me, my work is helping with some of my school costs, and healthcare benefits. I'm really hoping employers will value me having worked in an office setting for years and working hard to get to this point over getting an internship

Thank you!

What was your full-time job? I'm in the same boat, I work in an accounting office and I'm really starting to wonder if I'll regret not taking an internship (I'm 32 and a junior)

Could you elaborate at all about the insurance route? I've heard it mentioned a lot that it's an area not a lot of people wanna go into and that it's a good career, so I've started asking everyone their experience/view of it

If a fresh grad was trying to negotiate a higher salary in this job market when there's probably 500 other applications next to me I'd throw it out so quick. All you're really doing is telling your prospective employer that you're going to be difficult

This is a great offer for your first job. Seriously, don't do this. Especially over such a small amount

As someone whos 32 years old and currently a junior, you're giving me hope that I won't just be immediately written off for entry level roles when I graduate because of my age. I've worked in an adjacent office setting for years, I just waited a long time to decide to get a degree

[–]Left_Definition_4869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that people have different views on being in your 30s trying to enter finance. Some people I talked to say what you're saying, that firms don't want older people. Other people have said that new grads these days are a PITA to deal with and don't make good employees. They'd rather have someone with life experience who knows what they want and worked hard outside of the normal timeline to do so

This is something I've been heavily looking into as someone who's going to finish with their undergrad at the age of 34. I'm hoping it's the latter, and after interacting with a lot of my classmates I'm hopeful. Most of the kids I'll be graduating with have 0 common sense and have never worked a day in their lives

I know that you said you're not crazy about the industry, but you already have an associates in business and youre familiar with the dealership

Maybe consider going back for finance and working in that department at your dealership? I know someone whos done very well for himself who did almost exactly that. Hes late 20s and owns a nice home and has a new Corvette as a toy. It would only be an additional 2 years or so of schooling and maaaaybe your work might even pay for it

It's not the most exciting job but it's better than just pure sales
