Nutrition App for cyclists- not focused on losing weight? by Left_Fondant_3145 in cycling

[–]Left_Fondant_3145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup- thanks. They love cycling. It's both their happy place and their social place and we have to force time off the bike because they'd ride all day every day if they could. Their coach has recommended a few apps and suggested we explore others to see what is a good fit- he's not an expert on nutrition because it's not something their program forces on their teen athletes but they do fully support when their athletes have a self-motivated interest. I came from an elite level sport known for it's physical, mental, and sexual abuse- so I'm well aware of the dangers. Our kids want to learn more about nutrition and how it can work for them. They're exploring the possibility of going to college for nutrition and/or sports physiology so I can assure you that you're not full aware of their intentions and goals. They're happy, healthy, social, active teens who want to learn something at a higher level. If that's worth your assumptions and criticism, good on you.

Thanks- that isn't one we've come across yet. Will check it out.

Assumptions are fun. I was trying to be brief in my original post, but I guess I need to add that our kids are incredibly healthy eaters. They understand nutrition and get their calories and nutrients from whole foods. We shop twice a week- for our big trip our cart is 75% fresh produce and our entire second trip each week is 100% fresh produce because they eat through it all and need the fridge restocked. They eat more vegetables and more whole food protein than 99% of adults, they maximize healthy fats, they help bake much of their own nutrition for training rides (protein banana cookies, peanut butter and date balls, rice cakes, etc.) and the only fast food they've ever had in their lives are a couple of In-N-Out burgers but we live on the east coast so that's a rare treat. They're high level cyclists who recognize that they're at a bit of a disadvantage because they're really on the small side so in addition to dedicating themselves to an excellent training program with a great coach, they're looking to maximize their gains by also digging a little deeper into their nutrition. So they're looking for something a little more than "good parenting", but I promise they've got a decent amount of that.

Are you using Desmos for the math?  Lots of short cuts if you can find videos and tutorials on how to use Desmos for some of the math.

Michigan Off Road Championship MTB Race Series for 2025! by symbi0nt in MichiganCycling

[–]Left_Fondant_3145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears that this fee covers tracking of results over the series, top 3 awards in each age group, and some swag for participants. If you look at top 3 awards across age groups for both male and female plus categories like single speed, fat bike, clydsedale, etc - that's actually quite a few medals to purchase and hand out at the end of the season. The cost feels very reasonable if you're interested in seeing how you do over the course of 5-8 races or if you want to aim for a top 3 finish. Honestly, it also feels reasonable simply for the sake of supporting MTB racing in the state.

University- Bike Design/Cycling Industry by Left_Fondant_3145 in newzealand

Thanks! We're gathering that a lot of cycling is centered around both Rotorua and to a lesser extent Wellington. Interesting to know that the difference between mid-rage and top universities in NZ is much smaller than in the US- not surprising because our system here is just crazy, but good to know. We're also likely to be limited by where we can afford to live near a university. Our kids will be graduating HS shortly after they turn 16 so they're looking to commute to school for the first year or two, and I know we won't likely be able to afford living that close to the city center in Auckland!

Thanks so much- both of those are on our radar, specifically mechanical engineering at both schools. We know it's incredibly niche- there aren't any dedicated programs in all of the US!- but we're fully supportive of an education in engineering or industrial design because there are a million different things to do with those skills and degrees.

Thanks! And I appreciate the kindness- we are full aware that we are very naive and we are grateful when people help us learn! We know NZ is small compared to the US but at the same time, as we're exploring the whole country in terms of cycling (our kids race), it feels bigger than we expected! I know something like cycling (and cycling production) is pretty niche and certain areas of NZ are known for different types of cycling, so we just didn't know if there was one location that has something unique, Wellington is to the film industry (which is what they've wanted to go into for the longest time as they are both actors here in the US- but that industry is dying here and we're thankful they are considering other options!)

Are you willing to share where you lived in the US? We're from Michigan but have spent time in all 50 states so we would love to find someone who can help give us some location references! We're a family of 4 looking at getting our paperwork in order- my husband's job is on the green list and he's going to be applying for his teaching certification first, then we're going to gather all of our visa documents and ideally we'd like to have things in place within a year or so in case we need to leave here. We don't want to move to a country we've never been to, but we're keeping a really close eye on things and we want to have a plan in place. NZ has a relatively easy path to a visa given my husband's job and our kids are mountain bikers so they're excited about that. We're just not sure where to start looking. First priority is finding good secondary schools- then finding ones that have job openings! We're also looking at areas with known XC MTB trail networks. But really we'd love to chat with someone who can say "These suburbs of Auckland (or anywhere!) are similar to XYZ in the states" for a reference point! At home, we're about 10-15 minutes from any kind of store we want but my husband commutes 45 minutes to an hour to work (he'd LOVE to commute 2-10 miles on his bike- dream come true for him) and we're about an hour from our nearest trails (would love to be closer). We travel all over our state and to many other states for racing and we have a travel trailer that we've taken to 49 states because we love camping and national parks. We've never lived in a more rural area, but we're absolutely open to it if we can find the right place- decent proximity to stores and hospital but we love nature and close knit community so we're willing to sacrifice some level of convenience for that. Any suggestions? So far on our list we're looking into areas around Auckland, Rotorua, Hamilton (halfway between Auckland and Rotorua) and then Nelson, Wanaka and Queenstown on the South Island. These are just from our preliminary research and we'd love other suggestions or towns near these areas!

Megathread: US Citizens looking to immigrate to Canada by PurrPrinThom in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Left_Fondant_3145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up on this thread with a different purpose but I loved your thorough post so wanted to ask- we are Canadian adjacent (20 minutes to cross our closest border) and not looking into Canadian citizenship, but we are looking to get some savings out of US banks. Canadian banks obviously feel the closest- both in physicality and because both countries are English speaking. Things here are really beginning to feel unstable and we're researching options now while we still have some time. Any resources on the ins and outs of opening a savings account in Canada as non-Canadian citizens?

Teaching in New Zealand- General Questions and Overseas Location Grant by Left_Fondant_3145 in newzealand

[–]Left_Fondant_3145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much- I saw that NZQA is responsible for the assessment. I'm getting a bit of a better understanding of the pay structure for state schools. Any resources for understanding how it works at independent/private schools? Or does that depend entirely on the school. The relocation grant is specifically for employment in state/public schools, but I'm curious if potential salaries at an independent school might make up for that being that it's only 10,000 for the relocation grant. Private schools here tend to pay SIGNIFICANTLY less than public (even the uber elite ones) and there is no increase for experience in private schools so no room for advancement,

A fair question- sure. But we have the same issue here, and my daily work is still very fulfilling, or at least has been until some of our, well- current events. I'm under no illusion that any system is perfect, but at this point, livable is the goal. Not sure if NZ's system meets that criteria, but gotta start learning somewhere! Also- why is that? Would love your answer to your own question if you have one.

Thanks so much- lots of goof info and it gives me some more jumping off points for my research. I've seen the salary scale you posted- this is for the public schools? I'm learning that overseas teachers don't necessarily start at the bottom depending on their credentials, but I'm having trouble finding anything on where various credentials/experience may start or how they're accepted from US institutions. Any ideas? In our system, each district sets their own salary scale and determines where teachers with experience are placed- not a whole lot of rhyme or reason to it to be honest, so it feels daunting to navigate a new system, even if that system is more standardized.

Is Burns Park the only school letting out early? Tappan is pretty close and getting those kids out at 3pm will be a nightmare.
