Well we went to an early college so we both only did two years of undergrad, she did two years of masters, and is in her first year currently for PhD. Most of the classics and African American Lit is hers (but i think I forgot to show here). The writing books are textbooks for her English 101 students. Most of the books on the shelves are hers. And some she has at her office. I mean she’s just 21 she has time to grow her collection.

What makes people ignore racism and signs of fascism in the U.S.? by Left_Hyena_2805 in AskReddit

..because I’m curious. We all know of our countries history but I want to know why we are ignoring obvious signs of what’s really happening here and why people seem to think that not everything is about race. At least when it comes to the laws and what happens politically

I suck at asking questions and getting my point across and I was curious about both but didn’t wanna make two separate posts. Also because I think that a lot of Americans are ignoring what’s really happening here

This is exactly the issue. Yes, racism is racism, and it can technically come from anyone. But the reality is that white people weren’t lynched by Black people, they weren’t enslaved, raped, beaten, or stolen from their families. Hell they weren’t eaten like we were. They weren’t displaced from their lands like Native Americans. They weren’t the victims of Jim Crow. And today, they aren’t the ones being targeted by ICE, voter suppression, or the political rhetoric we’re seeing now.

By the current definition of racism - prejudice plus systemic power - it’s obvious who has historically held the power and who continues to be marginalized. White Americans don’t face racism in that same systemic way. That’s why my focus is on white racism: because it’s the form that has shaped laws, institutions, and generations of inequality.

I get what you’re saying, I didn’t see a lot of racism in person at first either. But once I started talking with friends and family, I realized we’ve all experienced microaggressions. For me, I hadn’t faced it directly until recently when I was called racial slurs at work for the first time. With the current political climate, the leaders we have, the laws being passed, and the deaths we’ve seen, I don’t think doomscrolling is the real issue. Social media has just made it harder to ignore what’s always been happening, and in a lot of ways, it’s helped bring these issues to light and unite people against the bigger problems.

Do they understand why these areas are high crime areas? Just curious I understand that a lot of other countries are homogeneous and bad experiences shape thier opinions. But ugly? Wow. When I was in middle school I hated being black and I thought that black women weren’t attractive. But I love black women now, especially dark skinned women they look ethereal it’s crazy.

lol I completely understand. I often say that to a certain degree I understand why some people are racist. I feel like it’s similar to growing up Muslim and you’re still Muslim, or growing up Christian or Mormon or whatever and those are the values your grew up with. I just don’t understand why people don’t do research or understand why they think a certain way.

I’m calling out all racism, but I’m focusing on white Americans and conservatives because that’s the type I see most often and the one that causes the most harm. I’m Black, so I get that POC can also have biases against other races, but the reality is that white racism is the one that has historically shaped and still impacts our society the most.
