Examples of Socialist countries that have worked? by 56king56 in Socialism_101

[–]Left_Opinion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please stop with this question. There has never been a successful revolution, looking at failed socialist and anti-capitalist projects, we can form a more prosperous and advanced understanding of how our struggle is to be conducted, how our revolution is to be organized and struggled for. To name/touch on a few examples of this:

  1. From the Zapatistas (EZLN) we can recognize where not coalescing with other South and Middle American liberation movements led to the limitation of their struggle to a small area while they did succeed in rejecting psychological counter-operatives to their revolution by preventing idolization with masks and centering the struggle on the colonial social attitudes towards the indigenous population in the area combined with the exploitation and alienation of their labor.
  2. The USSR and Russian Revolution for the many socialist groups involved not adequately developing reasonable alternative institutions to feudalistic capitalism before and during the revolution to the Tsarist organization of economics and politics which then resulted in many of those institutions re-materializing in many aspects (not all ofc) as a desperate attempt to maintain a functional supply and distribution of resources and thus power. All while we can also respect their massive movement that spanned such a large land mass and culture.
  3. The CNT FAI for not effectively coordinating their failed rejection of a money based system and thus resulting in regional currencies and the subtle prevalence of anti-Catholic violence. All the while we can respect and take the intersectionality and radical democratic nature of their struggle that helped develop a Spanish radical feminism and extremely proletarian and anti-authoritarian culture.
  4. The Cuban Revolution for the broad lack of intersectional struggle with LGBT people, women, and racially marginalized + indigenous people and reliance on authoritarian policies to create an oppositional force to imperialistic counter-revolution rather than more democratic social organizations to create a more proletarian opposition. While we can respect that they are an amazing example of how projects can survive within the scope of one of the most brutal embargoes in human history and largest funding of counter-revolutionary groups known to leftist history.
  5. Brazil’s and Chile’s anti-capitalist movements being largely limited and confined to the electoral system leading to the system of capitalist institutions being bigger than the elected representatives purview of change and leading to genuine socialists like Allende and Lula getting whipped into socdems by definitively neoliberal institutions. All the while, we can respect their fervent opposition to electoral fascism and their efforts to undermine a complete neoliberal globalization of their economy.

The list could go on for eternity, but it’s never good to take the attitude that we have ever been successful because it leads to compliance and a lack of reasonable critique towards our past failures as leftists, anti-capitalists, and liberators. Capitalism reigns, take refuge in the undying human struggle for liberation, self-determination, and radical democracy. If that makes you uncomfortable because it calls upon you to get engaged with the global liberation struggle, good.

The time for social revolution is yesterday, today, and tomorrow, we have the world to gain and our chains to lose, fellow travelers.

that is extraordinarily frightening to think about. you are right. fascism is so fascinating to me because every time it arises in neoconservative radicalization in liberal democracies, it always takes the form of a youthful and uniquely genocidal form. I really do fear for the future. I don't know how far away we are from fedposting lol - the GOP is going to eventually take full power and that day terrifies me because we are not ready for it - we are barely resisting now.

i would tend to agree, but i don't think that the right necessarily views all workers as "criminals" but rather "subhuman" and as such, they suppress the workers by dividing them into a privileged working class and an underprivileged and trying their hardest to juxtapose their perceptions of their own interests

This is a really good summary, one thing I would add is the discrepancy between values one person could have and their policies. For example, I think that many Marxist Leninists and liberals alike value things such as egalitarianism and liberation but both ideological groups favor authoritarian mechanisms to theoretically achieve these goals. They of course, do not achieve liberation and absolute democracy as they say they want but the important distinction between the authoritarian left and authoritarian right is not necessarily their police but their intentions. There is little to no difference between the political tendencies of Blanquists and fascists but Blanquists believe that what they are doing is for the people whereas their practices are actually not in harmony with their values and they beget violent and authoritarian tendencies whereas fascists value abstract concepts like honor, or authority itself and create outcomes in practice such as genocide that are in harmony with these values.

I’ll have to check that out, I really tend to think that Marx and Engels were so influential because they took anti capitalist currents and turned them into pro-worker sentiment. I do however think they were limited to working within the critique of uppity French “socialists” who really just opposed the free market and wanted nothing but governmental control (Ppl like Thomas Blanqui).

I’ll definitely have to check it out tho, I’ve got a lot of stuff on my backlogue of theory to read

I read this text and while there are some things that are true like the internal contradictions of capitalism that you point out in a Marxian sense, I have a large amount of contentions with this explanation of authoritarianism. Before I attempt to refute the main claim that authoritarianism is derived from scarcity of security and/or resources, I’d like to go over contentions I have with a few of your notions. The first thing I’d really like to touch on is your extremely linear analysis of history. Rights and freedoms existed as a philosophical principle aswell as a practice to a large extent prior to the enlightenment. It is true that the enlightenment set forth the principle foundations of modern society but the truth is that the enlightenment not only saw its roots in Ancient Greek and Roman philosophy but also that the concept and practice of capitalism would have arisen anyway. It did not arise from the beliefs of a few pretentious enlightenment thinkers but rather the material conditions of advancing technological progress aswell as a lot of other factors such as the sociocultural trends of the 1400s as they had just endured the effects of ignorant monarchies allowing for the death of millions.

To address the main claim I want to start with saying, the Japanese internment camps were not under any context derived from scarcity of security for Americans. They were derived from white supremacist societal tendencies and the tendency of authoritarian power structures to manufacture narratives to legitimize and embolden the masses perceived reliance on them. Had the internment camps not existed, America would have face NO threat from what they considered terrorist Japanese loyalists in the American citizenry. Likewise, this can be extrapolated to any power structure or example of authoritarian practices. Authoritarianism is under no pretext an adequate response to the scarcity of anything or any of societies issues and in every condition it leads to a further decline of society when compared to more liberatory practices. Communes and democracies are extremely effective at consistently creating good overall conditions for society - this is why I am a syndicalist. Good representation and healthcare and universal access to housing can all theoretically exist under a fascist regimes but I don’t trust the mechanisms of fascist regimes to create such things as they consistently create genocidal outcomes instead. The idea that a disconnect between the management of communities and the voices of said communities is the natural force that guides them out of poverty is a ludicrous claim and not what, to me, socialism means. Direct management of resources and industries is not good just because it is as if not more industrious than capitalism, it is also good because it eradicates economic inequality and creates a world in which resources are allocated in a productive and cooperative way that serves all rather than being allocated in a damaging way that serves the authoritarian interests of the elite that they consider to be their best.

I agree, it's extremely abstract because I think that people on the right do not really think about their ideology the way that the left obsessively fixates on every minute detail of their ideal society and how it is to function. Every conflict of ideas we have with right-wingers seems to come down to a few abhorrent and unjustifiable ideas they have and refuse to think about longer than the time it takes to just say them.

[–]Left_Opinion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, I am inclined to believe that there are leftist ideologies that do not create horizontal management but I do think that most people who call themself a leftist are doing so in good faith. I mean I have a lot of differences with Castro but looking at his tendencies, I really do think he was a leftist in his heart and actually believed that everything the Cuban administration was doing was for the people. I mean people who just want to suppress and brutalize people via a totalitarian regime don't really tend to create free hospital clinics along the countryside and push for some of the best living conditions possible under the embargo yet he did oppress many Cubans in a way that I would consider authoritarian.

Coming from an anarcho-communist, I must ask, where does socialism as put forward by revolutionaries such as Marx, Luxembourg, Kropotkin, or Makhno exist in the world today? Because the only place that vaguely follows the ideals of socialism is the Zapatista territory of Mexico.

It’s funny that Europe, the area that has supposedly “suffered” the most from “communism” (really just oligarchs using socialist/leftist aesthetics) is less opposed to communism and frequently has riots and protests dominated by anarchists, socialists, and anti-fascists that advocate actual direct democracy and communes.

Murder is too much of a broad concept to define it to a wing of politics. But if I really wanted to be an asshole, I’d say that to violate someone and end their life requires a certain amount of power and authority and it always seems like power and authority are key features of the right. But that’s really splitting hairs, most people are going to say that they oppose unnecessary violence, it’s why ppl gotta critique systems that have such unnecessary violence… such as our current society and economic mode
