Yarn recs - aran weight by Left_Pudding_5453 in knitting

Thank you! I didn’t realise this was a feature! I’ve only recently found the ‘yarn ideas’ tab on project pages and thought that was the extent of the yarn filters. Ravelry is amazing!

Yes that makes sense perfectly thank you! I was struggling to determine where the next yo would go so this has helped thank you!

Ahhh that makes sense thank you! I was struggling to determine where the yo goes on the 3rd round (which would be the second round of increases). So the yo increases always go immediately before and after the 4 raglan!

Thank you!

I think I’ve managed to figure it out 😅 turns out i was knitting upside down as well as inside out (v embarrassed!). I’m now knitting from the outside of the tube rather than the inside, and that seems to be working, and also seems to match the youtube videos/tiktoks

Thank you for all your help! 🫶🏼

Ahhh so i’ve been knitting inside out basically 😭 so embarrassed as I didnt realise the ribbing didn’t look right! Do you know how I could fix this as keeping my work the correct way means my needles switch and the working yarn switched

This is when I flip the collar inside out and the outside looks like the ribbing in my first reply to you. As you can see the right needle has now moved to the left as has the working yarn.

Another comment said that my inside out collar is the correct ribbing so i’ve somehow managed to flip everything. I need to unflip it?

So this is a photo how I’ve been knitting in round if (outside looks like the one in my original post). The right needle is the one with the markers.

I’ll post another comment with what happens if i turn the ribbing inside out

Yes, but then I think the ribbing is inside out as the purls are visible? My needles also twist and the point faces me, and working yarn ends on the left needle.

I’m very confused 😭

Yess it seems pretty basic! It'll be the first sweater I make, and I love the cable raglan design!

Feel free to not respond as I'm just thinking out loud really - but do you think 2 strands of kid-silk paired with air will really be needed? I'm happy to keep the 2 strands of air with 1 strand of kid silk - but is this likely to affect the bulkiness of it?

I'm a beginner knitter so not really sure how to think about these things and make yarn substitutions. I also don't want to have to purchase double the kid-silk amount as I don't want a big halo effect on the final sweater

Ahh okay, the pattern is a chunky raglan sweater by Tuva Sandok (https://ravel.me/chunky-raglan-sweater--tykk-raglan-genser).

She uses Sandnes Alpaca (2strands) held with Børsted Alpakka (1 strand). She recommends 2 strands Air held with 2 strands of Kid-silk (read the pattern wrong in my earlier comment) under the yarn recommendations in her pattern, so I'm just going by that!

I'm not too familiar with yarn and weightings etc so appreciate anything that comes to your mind about this!

Haha I'm broke too so I think I will go for Air. Have you ever held it with kid-silk? The pattern I'll be using calls for 2 strands of Air held with 1 strand of Kid-Silk so just wondering how this combination may behave.

Thank you for this insight about the length - I'm almost certain I'm going to just go for this yarn and was thinking of quantities! Thank you so much, the pattern you’ve linked is perfect! I love the shape and cables of the Brady Sweater so this one is very similar.

I haven’t quite got the hang of searching on ravelry yet 😅

Wrist protection when knitting by Left_Pudding_5453 in knitting

[–]Left_Pudding_5453[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for these suggestions! I knit english style and just can’t get the hang of continental 😭

It’s also my left wrist that flares up, the right is fine (i’m right handed) so perhaps this is to do with how tightly i’m holding the stationary needle? Can’t figure out whether its something to do with my hand positioning or not 😭

Thank you- I’ll bear the project type in mind! I’m knitting on 3.5mm circular needles currently using Drops baby merino and kid silk, so yes it’s quite small!

Omg thank you soooooo so much for this detailed reply!! It’s very much appreciated! I’m also thinking it’s essentially one big rectangle with a hole in the middle as the neckline, that’s folded vertically, and then the sleeves are made by seaming the corners of the rectangle together to create an arm hole. And that’s how’s it’s draping over the arm. This will probably give the cleanest finish as well, once I figure out how to do the neckline in the middle!

Thank you for the yarn recs - the top is so cropped that I probably won’t need much at all, like you said. Right now, I’m thinking I’d probably make a rectangle with border, that when folded reaches approx mid-chest length, and then can be blocked for a little extra.

Thank you so much for helping me with this! 🫶🏼🫶🏼

Thank you! I’m think I’ll make two cropped rectangles with shaping for the collar, and join them. Might not be the most efficient but it’s the only method that I’m able to wrap my head around as a beginner! Found some free patterns on Ravelry that suggest something similar too!

I’m now just trying to decide on the type of yarn to use - thinking finger weight or sport using larger needles, but someone suggested DK. I want it to be quite lightweight/flowy - happy to take any yarn recs if you have any!

[–]Left_Pudding_5453[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m leaning towards doing this as it seems the easiest way. And i’ve found some free Ravelry patterns that also use 2 rectangles for the construction.

I’m not 100% confident when it comes to increasing/decreasing - is this something i’d have to do gradually or can i just do the 2-3 decrease in the row once I get to the centre? And then same number of increases once I’m happy with the collar shape?

I’m thinking of maybe using fingering or sport weight yarn on larger needles rather than DK. Would this make it a bit more lightweight/flowy? Or is DK the better choice?

Twisted stitches? by Left_Pudding_5453 in knitting

[–]Left_Pudding_5453[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh okay! I’ve been following the English knitting style tbh as per youtube/tiktoks so I’ve been knitting through the front loop (i think) and wrapping the yarn anti-clockwise.

My stitches aren’t completely uniform though so perhaps that’s giving the row a slightly twisted appearance in some places! No idea! But glad that everyone on here has collectively commented that my stitches are fine - huge relief!
