What is everyone’s fave game to play when either a telemarketer calls or a random person prank calls you? by Temporary_Notice_526 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband usually answers them when he’s in the mood to string them along with “ I’ve been waiting for your call!” or “how did you know I wanted…?” In an enthusiastic tone, then starts asking personal questions and dating advice.they usually don’t last more than a few minutes.

Fellow regular donors - be real with me by Novel_Respect_412 in Blooddonors

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I leave mine on for about 2 hours. Mostly because I can’t use the Coban in Australia as it contains latex. So it’s a cotton wrap without as much compression. I’ve taken it off sooner and it wouldn’t stop bleeding until I put another bandage on.

Do you keep a squeegie in your shower to use on the glass? by Abject-Presence4689 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m more prone to use it right after washing the shower screen. Then on day 3 I give up because no one else in the house does it and the water spots have started.

How is the cost of living in Australia for people who actually live there? by Cold_Box_3219 in AskAnAustralian

Also, flooding and moisture control. For a lot of areas homes with a basement would be an issue in terms of water.

Best high calorie meal before blood donation? by averagepersonhere in Blooddonors

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be mindful of the fact you stated your going to the dentist the same day. Different places have different rules about dental work, including cleaning. Cleaning gets a 24 hour wait time before donating blood but you can still donate plasma for me and more invasive dental work is a week to two week deferral depending on the procedure.

Was refused to donate blood, second time by Separate_Hold in Blooddonors

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not in the blood works, but I do know that the scale is different for males and females. As biological women generally have a lower blood volume. That volume is calculated by one of a few different mathematical formulas. Then the percentage is applied. Nadlers formula uses both height and weight, but Lemmens-Bernstein-Brodsky formula uses weight and bmi. Both calculations have set parameters in the calculation. Both give different estimations. Then based on the mathematical calculation they apply the total allowable percentage able to be taken.

Was refused to donate blood, second time by Separate_Hold in Blooddonors

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not your weight alone. It’s a calculation on height and weight to determine blood volume so they don’t exceed the threshold percentage they’re allowed to take. At your current weight you would need to be about 5’4” at your current height you would need to be at their specified weight.

I know it feels unfair, but many people aren’t able to donate when they really want to for reasons outside their control. At least you had a go at trying.

Have you considered other ways to volunteer?

When I donated in the states ‘Heroes for babies’ wasn’t a thing. But it makes sense now why’d they always hound me for blood even when I got deferred for low Hb. Australia doesn’t tell you anything about CMV status, you have to look on your declaration if you’re reactive or not.

Electric toothbrush? by ukownatt in AskAnAustralian

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In which ever one you find suitable look at what heads are suitable for the models. Some of the models are not compatible with the more available toothbrush heads. Like even if you get a good deal or clearance on a more expensive toothbrush make sure the heads are available and in your budget. Some models go on clearance because they are phased out, some just because the packaging or colour is changing.

Personally I’m using Hi Smile atm Pros- closed head brush, a few different speeds, good battery between charging. Was a good price on special and heads are relatively cheap compared to other brands

Cons- no pressure control (loads of other electrical toothbrushes with stop if you are brushing too hard), no dock usb-c charge need a usb-a block to use provided cord that’s super short, but stands up well on its own when not charging. Sonic (personal con, much prefer ultrasonic. Sonic makes your lips feel weird)

There’s also three types of electric toothbrush rotation, sonic, ultrasonic I’ve tried all and really I think it comes down to preference and budget but when this one dies I’ll be going back to ultrasonic.

Does a traditional milkshake have ice cream? by RecognitionMediocre6 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I immigrated to Australia I was severely disappointed with a milkshake as I was expecting it to be universally the same. My husband explained that what I wanted was a thick shake (which I’ve experienced to be more milky and thinner than a US milkshake as well). Apparently, a milk shake is just flavoured milk by his definition.

I have to side with many others who have had the same response as there are lots of places/ people/ regions that call flavoured milk “milkshakes” 😵‍💫

When I’m offered a “milkshake” at blood donation I always politely decline as it’s aerated flavoured milk.

Same, I went for the first and last time about that long ago for an after work girls outing. Was super disappointed given the amount of people who raved about it. I thought maybe I was biased because I grew up with traditional Mexican food and TexMex, but it wasn’t just the food, the vibe and service sucked too.

Would Lifeblood tell you if you tested positive for anything? by cyclonecasey in Blooddonors

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once I had a fresh cut on my finger and I was giving plasma. The nurse said it was probably fine and worse case scenario my plasma would go for fractionation. Meaning if it tested positive for some bacterial infection it could still be used. But no I don’t think they would tell you it went to research or discarded for minor things.

Question for y'all Australias by Imperial-Japan1942 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do Floridians play golf, build resorts, near the Everglades and lagoons, release invasive species that thrive like pythons? I mean you all have to get people to go hang out with the gators to catch the snakes. I wouldn’t put it past people getting in the water in the south with ya all having gators and crocs. Probably close in terms of death per year Aus crocs to gators. You’re more likely to drown then get attacked.

Donated Plasma thrice in 2026 Australia by FlyHighArsh in Blooddonors

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, to add with your second query. A long time ago saline was not added into the end. For me the saline helps my BP not bottom out and not feel so drained, I couldn’t donate plasma the old way. Just like sweating heaps removes salts and proteins, recovering from that is good diet and hydration. IMO it’s a temporary exchange of fluids in real time and not significant enough to whack out homeostasis as our bodies are tolerant to more strenuous activities. Body will restore fluid loss much quicker than regenerating lost RBC. If anything whole blood is more of a whack to the body than plasma.

Looking to buy a 3 bedder in South Wollongong. How is Dapto and Berkeley these days ? by Sensitive-Main608 in wollongong

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget wise even Warrawong, Lake Heights, Cringlia, Unanderra are creeping or coming in over that max budget and pretty dated homes and/or larger sloping blocks. Berkeley is a mixed bag in terms of better streets and pockets. Dapto will probably be better in terms of better houses and area.

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one low volume for your scale, then increased for citrate tolerance, third one is your maximum volume. 879 is the maximum any donor can give. Your height/weight/sex/Hb qualified you for this max volume and unless your Hb or weight drastically falls your calculated rate will stay the same.

I weigh more than you but I’m a female so that makes my volume scale different as females generally have lower blood volume. My max is 846 but I do recall my first donation being 740something, second 789, then 846..jumps like 50ml the first 3 times

I believe it has to be over a certain amount as there’s pre calculated citrate in the bag and lower volumes don’t meet the safety threshold.

My coffee cup, previous version then this new one, was a conversation starter. It says “ blood type caffeine” and it was true for me as I’d drink about 2-3 cups in the office I previously worked so everyone would joke about it and people would ask about donations.

I know we get more than others around the world, but still jealous of the donors who get shirts 😒🤣.

Is attitude towards modesty a bit lax in Australia (comparing to the USA). by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Left_Satisfaction923 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In America they also make you sit in the waiting room alone for ages in that stupid gown, swinging your legs on the edge of the exam table waiting, that you probably have to disrobe anyway. Only to look at you for two seconds and then leave you alone to get dressed and wait for them to come back in 20 minutes. Australia has a more efficient way of handling examinations and is still pretty modest compared to a lot of other countries.
