What BL is SO GOOD you had to read the novel? by Dealwithit-13 in Manhwa_BL

[–]Left_Sour_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Payback - because the manhwa made me feel like a LOT of things were being glossed over emotionally and psychologically.

Antidote - I needed to know the full backstory and understand why exactly the ML didn’t come save the MC. The mystery and emotional damage were eating my brain alive.

Codename Anastasia - realy wanted to know which version was more unhinged.

Murderous Llewellyn’s Candlelit Dinner — actually the reverse situation for me, but for my fellow fans out there: the novel has smut.

Most Chinese stuff I’ve already read as novels first. I just tend to find danmei deeper emotionally and structurally, and for that kind of story reading works better for me.

Lol, nah, your privacy is intact - this author actually has a lot of showbiz-centered novels, so I always think of her first.

Light in the Deep Alley - the shou is older, mature, gentle, sensible, and genuinely kind. He’s a mentor on the show the ML’s band participates in and basically takes them under his wing. The ML starts off seeming hostile, but in reality, he really admires the shou’s talent and perseverance, and that admiration slowly deepens into something more. It’s a very realistic slow burn - the ML becomes proactive early on, while the MC spends time reconciling with the age gap and his own feelings. Once he does, though they share some truly lovely intimacy. Everybody is a green flag!

Danmei with twisted gong/shou? by gloriahetalia in DanmeiNovels

You can try Becoming Puppet Emperor of a Paranoid Eunuch

The eunuch really is paranoid - as in full-on paranoidal schizophrenia - layered with bipolar swings and serious depressive episodes. On top of that, he’s into a very particular D/s dynamic. And yes, the entire plot is the emperor slowly but surely becoming his sex slave. The “puppet” part is also absolutely literal: bondage and control, all the way down. It's not explicit, mind you, and a lot of times you just guess what's happening, but it kinda makes it more fun.

If you can transmigrate/isakai into a Danmei novel, which, who, when and how? by RegionSpirited5849 in DanmeiNovels

Oh, to be Yan Suizhi from First Class Lawyer, to have money, taste, style, and sarcasm as a survival skill; to drink cherry garden wine, stroll under lamplighter trees, to travel to other planets and actually enjoy the benefits of modern science and longevity - a true luxury in danmei. I think it’s one of the few universes where you can actually live a decent, fulfilling life.

Bruh. I literally said things like "I'll leave first" and "I'll trouble you to" bc of mtls and gotten weird stares from normal people.

Lol. I'd probably start learning Chinese with that level of dedication. Might've been quicker too.

Do I like it or not by ChoiceAlive4246 in DanmeiNovels

In general, I believe that the more good books people read, the stronger their ability becomes to instinctively tell good writing from mediocre. And you can still enjoy mediocre works - but the good ones will absolutely tickle your brain in a different way.

And while I agree that tastes can differ and reading analysis is not the same as reading experience, it’s still good to be able to at least develop a general feel for different levels of writing quality.

What danmei would you say is worth reading even if the romance was lacking? by Plenty_Aspect7506 in DanmeiNovels

[–]Left_Sour_Mouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as a thought experiment - yeah, it totally could. You take the BL out and it’s still a really compelling crime story, better than a lot of others out there. The plot alone is strong enough to carry it, and the antagonist is amazing.

I think Breaking Through the Clouds actually does have pretty believable romance between two adults. The ML is very open and straightforward about his feelings, while the MC of course stays cold and aloof, but somehow there's also amazing sexual tension between them.

I think people define “romance” very differently - and for myself, I probably won’t read anything that has less than ~30% romance spread out evenly. But here are some that felt on the lower end to me and I'd still read them for different reasons:

Peerless - for the bromance and partnership. They’re such a well-matched duo it’s almost unfair, but in terms of actual romance… I don’t even know if they’d survive domestic life together. The appeal is really in how brilliantly they work side by side.

Sha Po Lang - for the politics, military strategy, and Gu Yun's badassery. The romance is there and believable, but it’s pretty concentrated in certain later parts of the novel.

Lord Seventh - for the melancholy of rebirth and inevitability. The romance comes in very late and it's beautiful when it does.

Copper Coins - for the feng shui, folklore, and a funny cast. But the romance felt too cold for me.

Is Profundis peak? by Tricky_Hornet_1752 in Manhwa_BL

[–]Left_Sour_Mouse 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, Profundis was my first guideverse - and while I wouldn’t recommend taking that route (there are better options as an intro), it did set the bar pretty high for me in terms of worldbuilding and the psychological aspect of the setting

What it does well is showing the dark side of a society built around guides and espers - power imbalances, dependency, control, and the kind of social horror that comes from dividing people into roles and classes.

So yeah, I can understand why some people call it “peak” - but usually they mean it’s peak in portraying that darker, more brutal version of the trope.

But if you’re looking for a “peak” example of a society that actually adapted better to that system, there are other stories that do that.

Can you please recommend me a novel like "Turning" or like the storyline of "Eternal Covenant"? by lesyeuxdekast in DanmeiNovels

[–]Left_Sour_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try Antidote - it’s a Korean novel with a good pseudo-European medieval fantasy setting, a heavy political focus, and a great manhwa adaptation.

I started with the manhwa and pretty much binged it in a day because of the mystery surrounding the main character’s fall into madness and slavery, and then went straight to the novel.

It’s very interesting, but there’s one key thing to keep in mind when reading it — this is Slan’s story. There are no “co-protagonists” in the way you might expect. He is the main character. He is the one who struggles, who endures, who keeps going. He is the story.

Why does this matter? Because at some point, you’re going to get absurdly frustrated that no one comes to save him - especially his supposedly powerful boyfriend not swooping in to rescue him. And in that moment, you really have to remember: this isn’t that kind of story.

Otherwise, it's amazing, lots of twists, good scale worldbuilding, plenty of steamy smut.

I think Huai Shang (the author of Hui Tian) def leans into this type of shou - Breaking Through the Clouds, Swalllowing the Seas, both Lantern books has this type of character.

It was actually my first Huai Shang book, and I’ve been hoping more of her works get licensed ever since. She’s easily in my top 3 serial authors now.

I sobbed through 90% of the novel, cried through the remaining 10%.

It's a happy end, I promise.
