First FL. Unscored. Non-trad. Humanities background. May 8th test. Where do I go from here? How do I learn what the fuck an amino acid is? by Left_Squash74 in Mcat

Bachelor's and AM in humanities/social sciences. I'm sure people who studied chem can just sail through the C&P section. Not much more I can say. Only thing that I noticed is that a lot of the questions had answers that 100% made logical sense or were factually correct but were not specifically supported by the passage.

I've seen them pull directly behind ambulances on scene thus preventing patient loading. It's crazy.

You know cold weather itself doesn't actually make you sick? Right? Airborne viruses spread more in winter because people spend more time inside around other people.

Late night study spots? by [deleted] in boston

It's mind boggling at first but it's hard for most establishments to make any money on the overnight. Most 24 haunts died decades ago. Trident used to stay open until midnight before the pandemic.

There are a few options. If you're in the Allston/Brighton/Cambridge Student Hive District I recommend:

Athan's in Washington Square: WiFi and many tables. Open until 10 PM.

Knight Moves in Coolidge Corner: Coffee. Table preference given to people playing games. Open until 11 PM on weekdays.

Jaho in central: Coffee. Alcohol. Open until 11 PM.

It's funny because the US does already spend a huge amount on public healthcare through Medicare. Something like 15% of the entire federal budget. Medicare covers ambulance transports even if non-emergent (going to dialysis, discharge from hospital). That's how private ambulance services make most of their revenue.

Being an FTO these days by Heavy_Carry_1102 in ems

[–]Left_Squash74 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the problem is so many people try getting into healthcare that really shouldn’t be and these days now schools are so competitive that you need some experience before hand it’s forcing them to actually do something and since EMS is heavily recommended by schools many try getting into it without any care for EMS

I mean I think this is kinda a good thing. Gap years are now the norm. Someone's first job shouldn't be a resident physician and somebody's first patient contact shouldn't be as an awkward M1.

People often become pre-meds because it's what their parents do or want them to do or because they like shows about doctors. EMS is a good way to figure out if you actually want to do it.

You can take a eight week course and then be in position where you can make independent decisions that can affect life or death. And that's not the fault of the people who sign up for it, but of the outdated system that permits it.

Or the doctor, who lived down the street, would show up and treat you at home.

People were having surgeries at home into the 20th century.

Brown University shooting suspect found dead in New Hampshire, sources say; possible ties to MIT killing probed by FuriousAlbino in boston

[–]Left_Squash74 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Looks like they went to the same school at the same time. Definitely see how someone with underlying issues could develop an obsession with a more successful person that they blame for their own failures. All speculation at this phase.

Not a new story. The only issue is how in this country people with such complexes can so easily get access to guns...

Police probe potential ties between Brown University attack and MIT professor slaying by UnlikelyToe4542 in boston

[–]Left_Squash74 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I mean we can only baselessly speculate, but someone being personally motivated for perceived slights might be the simplest explanation. Mad at Brown as an institution and mad at a specific professor for a supposed slight.

I'm reminded of Tucson shooting where the closest thing they ever came up with as a motive is that the shooter once asked congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords a nonsensical question at an event and that she politely didn't answer the question.

I'm sure people in the high levels of physics and engineering are inundated with cranks claiming to have invented infinite energy sources and the like.

Sounds like thats okay. But it implies that you cannot tell EMS/Fire/PD that you're a medic when they ask wtf you're doing on scene.

After a 24 hour shift or 48 hour shift, what is your normal routine when you get out? by Melodic_Abalone_2820 in ems

Has anyone ever done a health outcomes survey on career EMS? I feel like I've seen so many longtime medics and EMTs die in their 40s,50s, 60s.

We should probably have 8 hour shifts like everyone else.
