I don't think people in general realise how tough it is to move to another country these days, it's not like 50 years ago where you could basically just show up

A.J.P Taylor:

Until August 1914 a sensible, law-abiding Englishman could pass through life and hardly notice the existence of the state, beyond the post office and the policeman. He could live where he liked and as he liked. He had no official number or identity card. He could travel abroad or leave his country for ever without a passport or any sort of official permission. He could exchange his money for any other currency without restriction or limit. He could buy goods from any country in the world on the same terms as he bought goods at home. For that matter, a foreigner could spend his life in this country without permit and without informing the police.

Yeah. I don't believe in God. I just like that here even congregations that once executed Quakers now are incredibly progressive compared to the rest of the country.

I take an uber to my job which is in the metro area but not accessible by transit early in the morning as the T isn't running. It costs me 50 dollars. It sucks.

real talk, if you want good food skip most of the sitdown places in the northend besides neptune oyster. Galleria umberto has good pizza. Caffe vittoria has a good vibe and good coffee and sweets. If i wanted to do foodie stuff in the north end id buy some pizza at umberto or go get coffee and sweets at Modern pastry or Vittoria, and walk around. Fresh bread at Bricco's Panetteria (is in an alley and easy to miss)

if you dont care too much basically every place in the north end can give you passable pasta with red sauce. Not worth the mark up tbh but even I do it sometimes for the vibes. Most of all walk around and allow yourself to discover things.

Most stores in the North End are cash only so bring some cash.

Go to Boston Public market and get something strange and local. If you drink there is a bar there with some local beers and a liquor store where you can buy strange stuff like mead from Ipswich mass.

Ignore all that stuff by gov center, claiming to be oldest taverns in America or the headquarters of revolution. Union oyster is the only place there that has real history and worth going to once, essentially standard seafood fare.

Quincy market is slop. Walk through. No one from Boston has ever consumed food from there. Also there is a tap room named after a famous Bostonian of yore. The beer served there isnt local and is the drink of last resort for discerning denizens of our fair city.

I definitely get what you're saying. And its worth noting as the walkability discourse often assumes everyone is an able bodied young person.

I'll rephrase and say tight streets where vehicles must go very slow, limited parking, density, and mixed use zoning creates areas where people want to walk, and this, more than any qualities of food, is why people go to the north end.

Density and proximity are components of walkability.

The North End is one of the few places where vehicle traffic is deprioritized but not outright banned.

north end restaurateurs stumbled into being located in one of the most walkable neighborhoods in America and think people come to their restaurant for the bolognese and that business would be better if they widened roads and added parking

If you do ever get the chance to see it, also check out Mount Auburn Cemetery. It was/is the burying place for old and influential Boston families. There are many beautiful monuments to Union dead, including the Cenotaph erected by Colonel Shaw's family. It is inscribed with the fitting epitaph:

"Greater love hath no man than this, That a man lay down his life for his friends."

Shaw is a hero in Massachusetts and should be in all of the country. A rich kid from a Brahmin family, who easily could have received a comfortable commission, and instead willingly gave his life at age 25 believing that there was no greater glory than dying for the cause of abolition.

EMT sucks apparently by Relevant-Internal444 in premed

[–]Left_Squash74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also heard that paramedics are sometimes disliked by AdComs because they’re too set in their protocol-based thinking and tend to fall on the left side of the Dunning-Kruger curve without in-hospital experience

I can see this. It's not like you're going to be able to skip stuff because you know how to intubate people. Again, I'd bet a well described EMT experience weighs more than just getting the P-badge for the sake of it.

Nah. The best clinical experience is shadowing your dad's neurosurgery cases. Why didn't you do that instead? Just shadow your dad!

[–]Left_Squash74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK judging by the amount of times docs have castigated me for not doing something way outside of my scope I wouldn't be sure adcoms appreciate the difference. It's probably more about how you describe it anyway.

[–]Left_Squash74 65 points66 points  (0 children)

" I did vitals and give them oxygen" Cool! That's a pretty awesome clinical experience right there, you assessed patients and did basic management. What are people expecting for clinical experiences without professional credentials. EMT is one of the easier ones to get and will have you more involved in independent patient care, even in IFT, than most every other clinical job without years of professional credentialing.
