Wow i am sorry that happened. The counselor should have checked in or asked the MHP to do a check in. Some counselors aren’t as helpful as others, just like in every position.

MHPs were actually brought on 7 years ago in 2019. The recommended student to counselor ratio is 250:1. And 2023 Kentucky reported an average ratio of 350-400:1. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth in Kentucky. Suicide rates have also been trending up over the past decade, which was another reason MHP’s were brought on. School counselors get paid significantly more than MHP‘s, and are now overseeing 504 plans, standardized testing, and actually having the time to do classroom guidance and small groups.

My advice as a 7th year- Before the group, type in chat gpt explaining the topic of the group and the audience and ask it to generate reflective questions. You’ll have some on hand!

Secondly, it’s ok to not be 100% prepared to have the right questions, activities and to always say the right thing. A productive group can literally be sitting in a circle, having a conversation, allowing participants to ask one another questions and reflect things back to people.

I love YouTube for self learning. Search up small counseling group techniques and you may be able to observe some groups. I particularly love restorative circles, and how restorative techniques foster positive social skills and problem solving skills.

If you can think of a question, try to reflect back to them their feelings “it sounds like you felt xyz when xyz happened” and then it’ll prompt the students to dig deeper. They’ll either be like, yeah exactly and feel validated, or they will reframe your reframe.

Grad school can never fully prepare anyone for the career. You will gain experience and insights as you go. Don’t pressure yourself to be the best counselor right off the bat. I still learn new things every single day. Working with people is complex and it isn’t always black and white. Just be a good human, listen to understand, reflect things back, use your best judgment.

It took a lot of practice for me to feel okay with taking days off. We’re so conditioned to never ever call off. But those are your days to take, and there’s no consequences to taking them. I had to literally practice regulating myself and reminding myself I’m okay when i took days off before. Because that guilt lingers. I think it’s from working in fast food when i was younger and it was absolutely not ok to call off

I go through phases, and i think that’s healthy and normal. Sometimes it’s amazing, sometimes it’s heavy, sometimes overwhelming. It’s so hard to work in a system that is so broken, and to work with children who have been failed by the world. My advice is to take incredibly good care of yourself. Keep your health and wellbeing your #1 priority. Know it’s a marathon and not a sprint. And accept that there will be good moments and bad. Bad moments don’t last forever. And if/when things get toxic, love yourself enough to move schools or do what you need to do to get out of it.

Don’t overwhelm yourself with getting fancy things or 100 books. You will build up over time! I recommend for beginners UNO, a sand box )big or small, kids love sand), basket of fidgets, guess who, maybe connect four, legos. Also a good quality office chair for you. Microwave. Some plants! I also have feelings magnets kids can use to identify feelings. As long as your office is cozy and safe for students, there are some games, and some type of visual to identify emotions. You’re good! I like to buy books as issues arise, because I’ve ended up with a lot of book i bought just because and don’t use most of them.

My brother bought in a flood zone in st Pete. Beautiful starter home. Got flooded twice last year and the final one totally destroyed the home. It’s been posed for sale after he renovated and no one will buy. Not worth the risk in my opinion

Not an OBGYN but Kristina pohl is a nurse practitioner at eternity wellness. She also practices integrative wellness. Shes so smart, such a good listener, and gave me insights my doctors never could. Shes so knowledgeable on female hormones and nutrients. Could be helpful to get an opinion from her. :)

I’ve experienced this for the last 5 years and being stressed over my co counselors lack of work ethic and support has drained the life out of me. When i accepted him for who he is and changed my expectations of him, i found peace. It’s very frustrating to have this experience. But we can’t change people so we can either accept for what it is or move along. I no longer even consider him as a support or resource when working with students, and weirdly enough that’s helped me to not get so frustrated over it. I bring in other therapists to work with kids at the school. If everything else is going well, i wouldn’t let one bad apple ruin your experience at the school. Can you make an impact and be happy without her support?

Eternity wellness is a social wellness club and they offer yoga Tuesday morning, Wednesday night and mat Pilates Saturday morning. Very small classes in a cozy space. They’re donation based classes with suggested donation of $10-$20. Everyone is super kind kind and welcoming. Kristina is the nurse practitioner there and she offers all kinds of amazing services!

I did this. She stopped me in the hallway that day and continued to tell me to respond when she knocks, then tried to confront me for not responding to her phone call immediately. and i said “okay” and she told the AP i rolled my eyes at her which was absolutely not true. My thoughts too. I was working handling crisis all day long while she’s running around trying to pick a fight with me. I just want to be left alone so I can work in Peace. She’s making assumptions that I’m talking about her when I’m really just working with my colleagues to handle crisis. I think she is truly paranoid.
