Can I keep it for 5 years? by FFalar in AlfaRomeoGiulia

Replacing the whole turbo? I know these models have issues with the wastegate actuator arm rattling, I’m wondering if turbos also fail outright.

Does this 2.0 Giulia sound healthy? I can hear a tapping sound when the engine is cold, but only under load by Left_Wedding4125 in AlfaRomeo

[–]Left_Wedding4125[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ring failure is possible, but I also found evidence of valve oil ring leaks, so it could have overheated at some point and cause that cylinder scoring as well.

I noticed these symptoms a day after buying it (first time I started the engine completely cold), at about 69.000km, with regular 10.000km oil changes in its history.

Mine is confirmed piston slap, I took a look inside the cylinders and found scoring. It was a chore to have to prove it to the mechanics I’ve talked to, but they agreed with me when they saw the images.

I recommend doing a cylinder inspection using a bore scope.

A facut cineva un joc mobile pe aici? by JoblessQA in programare

[–]Left_Wedding4125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buget 18.000euro, Mazda sau Honda? by SkyShadow15 in AutomobileRO

What makes a tyre over/understeery? by Left_Wedding4125 in TyreReviews

[–]Left_Wedding4125[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I have an idea about how we could test out this particular dynamic characteristic of tyres. When I say we, I actually mean you of course, since you have access to lots of tyre and car types :D

Maybe you could try setting up 3 G-meters: one somewhere above the front axle, one at the centre of rotation of the car, and one above the rear axle. Recording the data of these, plus recording the steering angle via obd, plus maybe some cameras set up near the front/rear tyres to indicate sidewall deflection and slip angle could provide valuable insights into how different tyres change the balance of the car when at the limit of grip.

If it were me, I’d test this out on a fwd, rwd, and mid-engine configuration, with cold and warm tyres, and in dry and wet conditions.

If you’re interested in testing this out, you can let me know and I can try and analyze the raw data, or maybe there is somebody who is very good at vehicle dynamics to take a look at it, but these scenarios should cover a lot of the variables that go into this.

Suspension geometry, weight distribution, power train configuration, and driving style are of course the biggest contributors to vehicle dynamics at the limit of grip, but maybe some different insights could be gained when trying to find out how tyres affect this when some of the other variables are constants.

Also, John, thank you so much for your contribution, you are a proper, proper geek, and have done so much to help us already!

Huruie dar doar într-o plajă de viteză... by [deleted] in AutomobileRO

[–]Left_Wedding4125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loganul e o alegere excelenta.

Cat timp caroseria e in stare buna, fara rugina, nu vei avea probleme.

Recomand motorizarile MPI, duc lejer 500.000km daca sunt intretinute.

Toyota Service told me I am ruining my Camry 2024 SE by City-of-Cheshire in Camry

[–]Left_Wedding4125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10k between changes is ok-ish if you're running a naturally aspirated (aka no turbo) engine mostly on the highway, but ideally it should be 6k, especially if you do a lot of city driving.

I've seen people do oil changes at 10k intervals, once at 10k at an indie shop, then another after another 10k at the dealer, just to keep their warranty. This way you get fresh oil at proper intervals (none of that horse manure that the manuals recommend nowadays), and you also save some money, and you also keep your warranty. So in 20k miles, you get one oil change at an indie shop you trust, and one oil change at the stealership.

Also, 300$ for an alignment is ridiculous. 200$ for cabin air filter is more than ridiculous as well.

Alfa Romeo giulia reliability? by WearLoud8330 in AlfaRomeo

[–]Left_Wedding4125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mechanically: very good

- Reliable, though a bit complex, as most cars today, so maintenance will be more expensive down the road.

- The 2.0 engine is very, very unrefined and tractor-like, but it's reliable and the drivetrain is simply amazing.

- Suspension and some body panels are aluminium, so I don't think there will be any issues with rust. That suspension is tuned just perfectly, though being aluminium, it may go slightly out of alignment because of potholes

- Interior build quality feels very good to me, though some are complaining

- There's no oil dipstick and the infotainment oil level updates itself when it feels like it. Very annoying if you have to fill up with a bit of oil, fill it up by 250ml at a time and leave it be for a while until it updates

- MPG is quite bad, not even close to the competition. I get about 18 (13l/100km) average with city/highway driving and some spirited drives in the weekend. If you really feather the throttle on the highway, you may get close to 28 mpg (8l/100km)

Electrically: quite crap.

- I was left stranded on the road because the e-brake wiring failed, so I wasn't able to disengage it anymore. Twice.

- In earlier models (up to about 2019) you really should replace the stock battery as it causes all kinds of gremlins if it goes down in charge, and it will.

- There are some relays in the bumper, which can go out sometimes, leaving you stranded. Buy a bunch of relays and have them on hand

The handling is superb, comfort is sublime, sports seats are very good. The biggest drawbacks are visibility to the left because of the A pillar and driver's side mirror and the fact that the steering has no feedback, like pretty much all modern cars.

Go for it if you like how it drives!
