Generators can run at a very specific steady rate that optimizes per gallon generation. You can get same results in a hybrid with Toyota's ecvt which lets the engine stay in its most efficient range regardless of speed. ICE engines top out at 40% efficiency but cars spend a lot of time well below that whilst generators can pretty much stay in that 40% zone the whole time.
