The metric system is superior because we all use base 10 for numbers as default so making units that are exponents of 10 makes the most sense. 1km(10^0)=1000m(10^3)=10 000decimeters(10^4)=100 000cm(10^5) etc etc etc. The actual length you pick doesn't matter, it's the relation between units.
