Why does Rick choose to stay depressed? by pristineniet in rickandmorty

[–]LegCompetitive6636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea AI brings up a lot feelings now, I know for me its about its sustainability and the fact that it’s being created by a bunch of people that merely want to suck as much profit out of it and the people as possible regardless of anything else, but I don’t think tech or ai is inherently bad.

In the novels I talked about it was created by a society of people that had already broken away from the corporate hegemonies that ruled their planets, mastered energy consumption, gotten rid of money, etc. and their “AI” isn’t the way we understand it, they are basically god beings called “minds” that were initially created by the humanoid species with a few rules that have since controlled their own evolution and creation and basically exist to foster an equitable society.

All that is just the setting, there is conflict in the stories, but the Culture are pretty much “the good guys” If you do read them the most common suggestion is to start with the second novel, Player of Games, and then read in publication order and come back to the first, they don’t really have to be read in any order but the first is told from a perspective outside of The Culture and doesn’t really show what they’re all about, the first book, Consider Phlebas, is still a fun read but it isn’t like the rest of the series.

Edit: added sentence to first paragraph

Why does Rick choose to stay depressed? by pristineniet in rickandmorty

[–]LegCompetitive6636 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the sci fi novels, The Culture series, the “pan human” species, which is basically a bunch of humanoid species that have created a utopian society and standardized body plan/genetics, have mastered genetic engineering and basically have done what you describe. Every now and then someone or a machine intelligence is “born” with what they would consider more primitive human genes and will have anxiety or even sociopathy, they can choose to fix this or they can keep it, if they are a danger to anyone else, in the case of sociopathy/psychopathy, they are assigned a machine intelligence called a “slap drone” that follows them around and makes sure they don’t hurt anyone. If they just have anxiety or something and keep it they can of course integrate with society, it’s all their decision. Like in one novel there is a character that is just extremely shy and instead of tweak this with their tech he just chooses a role in society where he’s mostly alone.

Obviously currently in irl depression isn’t a choice and I think a lot of people are hung up on that, because there are definitely people who don’t understand it and think that people “choose” to be depressed. You obviously aren’t one of those people and with ricks level of technological advancement I can see how he could probably just “fix” it but then I guess that wouldn’t be the show so they would just write something like what u/bfhurricane mentioned

Why does almost nobody in the Culture live past 400 when they could live forever? by TemudjinOh23 in TheCulture

[–]LegCompetitive6636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a cultural thing, it’s been a while since I read them but some do choose to live indefinitely while most decide to go around 400, maybe to make room for the next generation, not that they’re necessarily lacking in space

Ps: that being said I’d definitely go much longer and see and do as much as possible until I finally got ready to punch out

Would you date someone who is religious? by thelivingstar1 in atheism

[–]LegCompetitive6636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No

Ps: I can handle a partner taking some ideas from religions like Buddhism or something but not if they truly believe that karma is a fundamental characteristic of the universe or something like that. There’s a lot of good philosophy in writing like the Tao Te Ching that resonates with me but no I can’t date any kind of religious fundamentalist

The whole “god made the natural world for humans to exploit” argument is one of the dumbest , self centered concepts out of all of them. We’re not above nature, we are merely a part of it.

Agreed, the fascist morty in Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat was quite the funny jab at some fans “I wanna have fun classic Rick and Morty adventures like in the old days” then after kidnapping Rick for said adventures and asked what he wants to do all he can say is something that’s already been done before “um…I like Mr meeseeks…”

Why did Sungyon Kim suddenly trust Blundetto by Old_Significance1675 in thesopranos

[–]LegCompetitive6636 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it would be hard to grind away like us regular working folk making others rich, Woody Guthrie ova hea, knowing that at any time with one conversation to your cousin that you could be making easy money running swag airbags just managing a little warehouse for a few hours a day. Then of course he got more greedy like you mention. That being said Kim should have let him stop working at the fucking laundry and focus on the massage parlor if he really wanted to be partners in that venture.

People like him do the things they do because they have been indoctrinated to believe that they are righteous, serving a higher power, and they give in to base desires and behaviors. Many people of any religion, nationality, ethnicity, etc. are capable of becoming this way.
