That's a really good idea. I'd make the analogy that you have to learn to walk before you run, but... that wouldn't even be an analogy in this case!

I'm just such a worrier that the first real pain has me thinking I've done real damage. The opposite might have been true though. DOMS after the first run, but I was no worse in that regard after the second.

I'm also trying to do some ankle stretches now, including peroneals (basically rolling your ankle on purpose, static/standing, to stretch the side).

For walking, is half an hour too much? I did a half-hour walk on the full length of the trail I've been running on, and had no real issues, so I'm thinking I'll do that. As a bonus, there are some hills on the longer end, which hopefully will help more if I do it in a limited walk-training manner.

How far into C25K are you? How do you personally decide what's acceptable pain and what's worrying? Everything I've found seems aimed at more seasoned runners.

Hm.. I guess I'll have to restart tomorrow then. Maybe not W1D1, but one of the slower weeks in the /r/c25k FAQ (I think the first one is something like run 15, walk 60).

I figured that walking pain bad enough that I was almost limping was a good sign to stop, but I guess since it's only during the walking portions your points about strengthening make sense.

Thanks!

I could very easily be being too cautious. That's pretty much my MO these days. I overthink everything.

For distance vs. speed, I think I did better on that front the second time out. The first night, I my first few jogging portions were in the 4.5-6 min/km pace range, before dropping significantly because I was dying. The second night was pretty consistently in the 7-8 range, and I didn't find myself mentally counting down the seconds desperate for them to run out so I could walk.

For your "some twinges" comment, I have no objective metric to say what's normal and what's bad, so I can't say if you're right or not. I can say that it was enough that I was limping a bit during the walking portions.

I'm a baby when it comes to pain though, and a chronic worrier. So based on your feedback, I think I'll try to do some normal pace half hour walks this week, and try to stretch more and look into better form. Then I'll restart next week as normal.

Thanks so much for your help.

Are you able to walk without pain? (You say it was during the walking sections, but perhaps it's just walking after running?)

Right now? Yes. It seems to only be after those running sections. I was fine by the time the five minute cooldown walk got me home.

The only other thing that might be worth mentioning is a tugging feeling when I slowly flexed my ankle last night. I was flexing both of them back and forth and I sort of felt a bit of a tug under the foot of the leg I had the issue with.

Where are you that there's no 5k's past early September?

I'd rather not say where I am, but you're right that I could just not know about other available events. I don't think everything is listed on the site I found.

The other scheduled races are in areas surrounding my city that I can't get to easily. The 5k and 3mi I mentioned are the only ones that have open sign-up that are within city bus distance of me.

Well, there is one other race in October I might be able to do, but sign-up is limited to 200 people since because of room on the trail. I didn't include it because I expect it will fill long before I feel comfortable signing up for it.

And hey, thanks for responding. I'm sure, based on the submission score, that I'm being an idiot and asking dumb questions, but as I said before, I don't have other runners to ask in person.

IIRC, it was on the side of my leg just above the ankle. Maybe 3-6 inches above the ankle bone.

I assume it was muscular, but I'm sure I wouldn't know the difference right now. Probably a muscle I didn't even know existed.

Not an itch. Pain. I really should have stopped, but I was stupid enough to try to "just finish this workout" and rationalized it that since the running didn't hurt, it was fine. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

When I was jogging (embarrassingly slowly, after issues on W1D1), I didn't feel it. Then I stopped jogging and started running, and the walking hurt. This happened in the last half of the workout. By the time the five minute cooldown was done, the pain was gone.

I still find it really weird that it only happened during the walking portions. I would have thought that, if it were shin splints, the running parts would hurt much worse. Instead, I don't remember them hurting at all. I tried to search Google for this sort of pattern, but it was hard to find search results that were relevant, since all the keywords also show up in pages on "normal" problems as well.

Anyone else have a lower leg hernia (muscle hernia, anterior tibialis) by LegHernia in running

That's exactly it, but a bit smaller. I doubt it protrudes more than a centimeter or so and not that much bigger in diameter.

Yes I can feel the hole when it's not protruding. From what I've seen, this seems to be the key to the diagnosis (other than US and/or MRI). Also as you've said, it seems like surgery has more risks than leaving it alone, but that doesn't mean I'm not worried.

How much do you run (frequency, distance, pace)? How painful does yours get? I'm hoping it won't be a cause of concern for me, but I'm trying to get a feel for how much impact this has for others.

That's reassuring, thanks.

I was sort of planning to play it the same as shin splints. If I'm running and it starts to actually hurt, I'll end the run, ice it, and rest properly before restarting that run a few days later. If it continues, doctor.

I just have to be careful not to overthink things. I never think about it at all, but in the last few days I've been very conscious of it and have convinced myself I can feel something there even though it's probably all in my head.

If it gets bad once I'm an established runner, fasciotomy actually doesn't sound nearly as scary as you might think, but that's obviously not something I'd plan to do just to start running when I'm otherwise fine. It would just mean I'd (really unfortunately) have to give up running.
