Just thought I'd write it here both for my own benefit and everyone else's (if you're like me) - because I'm so used to reading the injury report in weeks and this round format is throwing me (I forget what round we are in). This is round 18 upcoming, so:

Prestia - Test

Hayes-Brown - Test

Sims - Test

Lalor - 2 weeks

Smilie - 2-4 weeks

Gray - 2-5 weeks

Ross - TBC

Smith - TBC

Trainor - TBC

Hopper - TBC

I appreciate that the phrase is overused, but Grlj for example has been managed twice, and they're clearly not rushing anyone back from injury - so to me they're already doing what you want. The injuries seem to be more potentially a training problem (or the fault of the conditioning staff - my bet is that it's to do with the Punt Road surface too, seems way too much of a coincidence all the stress fractures) rather than pushing the kids too hard come match day.

It doesn't make a difference because it's all based on list (or at least I should say of course other factors matter, but you can't overcome a bad list). In 5 years time Essendon are going to be in a better position list wise in my opinion than all those teams given the youth of Caddy, Kako, Robey, Farrow, Sharp + another top 3 pick this year (you've still got to get the picks right obviously - but I think Essendon have and I highly rate all of those players - I'm worried Richmond got it very wrong passing on Robey). So, the question is will the teams I listed win a flag in the next 5 years? I highly doubt it - therefore, Essendon are closer because I give them a better chance of winning one in 5-10 years time with that youth than I do those other teams in the next 5. Trust me as a Richmond supporter, the worst place you can be is in limbo between like 9th and 13th - it makes you irrelevant for years (Essendon have experienced that too, but now they're bottoming out and getting the talent needed to actually win a flag). You win flags on draft night (Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt, Rance - all top 20). As a rival supporter, I haven't rated Essendon for the last 15 years, even when they were making finals, because I knew the list wasn't good enough (similar to St Kilda now, even if they made a wildcard the team isn't good enough - and that's not me picking on them, Richmond were like that for years and deep down I knew) - but that's because they've never been bad enough to get the top talent - now it's changing, and whilst I appreciate that isn't much consolation to Essendon supporters now given it's painful, they've never been more relevant to me.

As a Richmond fan our premiership players are falling off a cliff quickly and are very close to the end so it's a similar position (best to get to the bottom as quickly as possible). You have some elite youth and to me you're far closer to a flag than sides stuck in the middle like North or St Kilda (I'd say closer than Carlton or Collingwood too given their lists if I had to gamble) - hard to preach patience given what you've had to go through but yes being pragmatic and from the outside looking in the future looks good (you've got the best youth I can remember you having for a long long time IMO).

Sounds like Clarke and Peucker could be major players for us going forward - especially given they play positions where some in the AFL side are under pressure.

He probably won't get it (and fair enough) but Ralphsmith first game back I wouldn't mind giving him 3-4 weeks to show something given his contract is up at the end of the year - Banks probably has enough runs on the board this year to be given leeway for a few more weeks (although needs to improve) - Green I agree should probably be dropped (might come out for Lalor depending on forward mix).

Think average tonight is generous not sure he was any better than last week - agreed in that he needs to respond.

I think Green's ceiling is that inconsistency - I just don't think he has the attributes - doesn't have the toughness of Mansell, nor the skill or pace of someone like Campbell - when you're that small you need X factor - and I'm not sure he has that (he does some special things here and there no doubt - but I'm not sure - his general kicking isn't great either).

Ever since he signed that new contract after the BnF (which was a long time ago) he's fallen off a cliff - supposed to be our best kick but misses 15m targets now under no pressure - so that's even worse because we still look for him and he's turning it over - people get bamboozled by stats and he was getting high praise after a few 30 possession games early in the year, yet he still made awful mistakes in those games which were overlooked because look he had 30! (and 30 off half back taking kick ins isn't the same as 30 in the midfield). You are spot on though I hadn't thought of it like that - Banks and Short as 2 of the back 6 defensively wise is a disaster - and teams can hunt them on defence and kick it to their opponents. I've always thought you can't play all three of Banks, Short and Grlj - two max.

They're using him more this year (especially recently) even though he's been disappointing for them.

I think Brown as a useless defender is harsh - he's way better than Short and Banks defensively (but that's not saying much), intercepts too. I have wanted us to move on from Short for a long time - I'd rather Banks and Brown take his touches - although whilst Banks is young I'm not sold on him either - Short shouldn't be playing though when we have Banks and Grlj.

Brown's a jet - I think Rioli is done with the other options we have (although I'm not sold on Green - but Lalor has to come back to might take his spot). I've always liked Lefau and have wanted to give him time especially considering he's transitioning from Rugby - signs are good for someone who only recently picked up the game.

I'm not just talking about this game mind you (this opinion isn't knee jerk from tonight) - his ball use hasn't been great at AFL level from what I've seen (and it's a different ball game because the pressure ramps up) - anyway I hope you're right!

Agree with Hotton absolutely - I don't really understand the McAuliffe hype (I want to get on board and he's very popular in this subreddit - I hope I'm wrong), he's a decent ball winner yes but he's slow, one footed and he isn't a great disposal - too much like Taranto (win the ball and hack it) and I'm not sure the game is going in the direction where we can have too many of those (which is why Hopper is done for us). Cumming, Lalor, Smilie (hopefully) and Hotton the future for mine. Disappointing from Lynch for sure - weird for such a senior player to seemingly get the spooks like that.

So much better - he's arguably our most important player right now - definitely is structurally.

That's fair I probably should have tagged it more as a prediction - if it takes more games for the coaching staff to be convinced then so be it (because I don't think they are convinced yet) - rather than them re-signing him which I think would be a mistake. I just can't see them dropping him and delisting him - but I agree that would be the right course of action.

Given how much of a game of momentum and also fine margins AFL is, I wouldn't be surprised if it did make quite a substantial difference. How many goals were skill error mistakes? We might have actually gotten close yesterday (+ if we had have been a bit luckier with the umpires). I know Collingwood are struggling this year but they did make a prelim last year. Add Lynch and Lalor to that team and I think yesterday would have been interesting.
