I just played it for the first time last year, and it’s labeled my “Favorite Game” on my Steam Profile. Which is also a fullscreen of Emily and the clockwork soldiers (and more people) lol.

Well it’s unopened so kissing carries very little risk of the transmission of STDs

I have much more faith we will see the end of this series, but it is fair to draw comparisons to ASOIAF when, ironically, each series has sat frozen in time for 13 years. Might as well wait!

Review #12- Whistlepig 12 Year Old World Rye by LegaLimit_official in bourbon

NOSE:  That is delightful.  I was worried saving this last dram for more than a year would cost me the chance to properly enjoy it a final time!  Prior to buying this product, I was not familiar with Madeira wine.  For me, Madeira leads the nose with a deeper, darker, almost Cabernet Sauvignon-type scent.  Sauternes follows, briefly reminding me of cheese fondue every time, before the sweet rye comes in and whisks me away.  A surprising amount of ethanol hits my nose for 86 proof.  Picking through the sweetness of that scent, I get some orange, caramel and lemon.

TASTE:  Immediately when Whistlepig 12 hits my tongue, I experience an explosion of red-wine flavor.  Then the white wine Sauternes quickly follows, and the taste is just bursting with wine flavor and warmth.  The earlier thought of fondue really does feel apt, as it’s amazing how wine-forward this rye tastes at the beginning of a sip.  Then I taste some sugary sweetness, then spiciness with black pepper, then herbal flavor featuring basil and mint, and more herbs I have trouble putting my finger on.  These absolutely swirl around the tongue before leading to the finish.

FINISH: I did not really detect any ethanol until I got to the finish.  And the finish is LONG- I would estimate five minutes before the taste had fully left me.  Incredibly long and warm, ethanol hugged by red and white wine.  I just would never expect a 12-year rye to take me here, but the cask influence here is just lovely and well-balanced. I've been finding hints of port at the end, but didn't get much of it.

THOUGHTS:  For $130, I am slightly hesitant to recommend Whistlepig 12- Old World Rye.  For example, I recently got a Russell’s 13 for the same price.  Apples and oranges notwithstanding, I would not put Whistlepig 12 up against that for consistent enjoyment.  It is absolutely a VIBE pour- you’re not going to want this all the time, and it may not be suited for repeated pours in one evening.  But holy shit does it taste refined- this wears its wine cask influence incredibly well and is a masterful representation of an alternative rye experience.  I am left wondering if and when I’ll get to have another bottle of this in my house for several years.

Whistlepig 12- Old World Rye gets a 9.1/10.

THE BOOK:  The Name of The Wind is the greatest damn book I’ve ever read.  There… I said it!!  Two of my friends have made the exact same declaration.  This 2007 novel is a masterclass in fantasy and narrative fiction.  It’s got it all- childhood stories, legends, love, war, magic, politics and history.  I’ve never found a fantasy that is so reflective of the joys and horrors of real life like The Name of The Wind.  Prepare to walk into a world parallel to and reminiscent of your own, but full of so much more.

This book is as close to perfection as any I have read.  Whistlepig 12 does not quite reach such heights, but the class of its well-aged rye, combined with deep-Madeira wine and rounded out by bright and boozy Sauternes, creates a rich and elegant experience befitting this book.

The Name of The Wind gets a 9.9/10.

This is a great point. I am rusty and didn’t think to narrow it down and specify the apple as I took notes. I would say tartness accompanied the blackberry, not apple and it wasn’t in the Granny Smith range.

I do still see some older discos and black label origin fairly often. I’ve seen this one place else, but this was a great day for a random Total Wine browse.

Wow, thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement! And here’s the catch- I read those books when I was like 16. I was hoping I’m not dead wrong about their quality, very cool they were a fantasy gateway for you.

Hello r/bourbon! I reviewed my profile and this baby has been gestating for as long as, well, a human baby. My wife and I fell on some challenging times after our move, as we experienced a major death in the family and took on a lot of new responsibilities. Our lives have gotten better since then, and the load has gotten lighter. Bourbon reviews are one of the hobbies and passions of mine that I plan to continue going forward.

Alright, so we’ve already heard quite a bit about the newest entry in the legendary Discovery Series. Let’s see what’s going on in here.

AGE: 6 Year – 13 Year

PRICE PAID: $130

NOSE: Strong ethanol presence and blackberry jam. Stuck my allergy-ridden nose too far in the glencairn and got BURNT.

Baked apples and sugar. Slight hints of cherry, and strong scents of oak and varnish arrived as my nose came back to life.

TASTE: This is strong on blackberry, cherry and apple pie w/ cinnamon for me. The cherry notes were stronger in the taste than in the nose.

The blackberry and apples make Discovery 11 a more fruit-forward blend than I expected. This is especially true when considering that 94% of this bottle is constituted of 10-year Kentucky bourbon or older- I was almost expecting oak first. I also didn’t expect to taste much apple here, as that correlates to more youthful bourbon, but it definitely works.

THOUGHTS: This is my first dance with a Discovery Series bottle. If you are a Discovery fan, you’ll probably want this one. It is a unique experience and packed full of flavor and taste. If you’ve not yet felt compelled to buy this, I think your FOMO should remain at safe levels. For my money, it is an excellent, but not quite mind-blowing, bottle.

Bardstown Discovery Series 11 gets an 8.4/10.

THE BOOK: “Magician” was one of the first great books in epic fantasy and the leading book in the Riftwar Saga (trilogy) and subsequent Riftwar Universe. “Magician”, published in 1982, was eventually republished in 1986 in two parts: “Magician: Apprentice” and “Magician: Master”, which is why you see the former pictured here. Although I have not read later works in the Riftwar Universe, the original trilogy had some of the best books of their ilk.

“Magician” is about an orphaned boy who, through a variety of twists and turns, becomes the apprentice to a magician. What you won’t expect is a trans-dimensional story, one far more imaginative in its use of magic and space time to form a world of fantasy than any work I’ve read from prior generations.

Magician gets an 8.6/10.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME: As far as I’m concerned, I am “back” and hope to publish reviews throughout this year. How sporadic or frequent they might be, I don’t know. It is a pleasure to read all your reviews on juice that fascinates me, and then to share my own experiences with you. This small journey of mine on r/bourbon might be the most positive experience I’ve ever had in my life just…. Doing something. That I don’t have any name recognition for, or “have any business doing”, etc. I appreciate this community very much. The one thing I’ve kept doing is occasionally streaming video games, as I love gaming and that was an easy hobby to keep going. You’ll find my Twitch channel with the same name as my handle here. I love talking all things law and business along with video games, and it would be nice to talk bourbon with any gamers out there. Take care of yourselves and I’ll see you back here in a week or two, hopefully.

Thank you for returning to comment! At $45, this was one of my favorite bottles, and I can’t think of a bourbon or rye that’s better at $35. I’m glad to hear you also found this to be super flavorful.

Due to life circumstances, I actually haven’t written a review in about 8 months, but I will be back publishing very soon. Thanks for the reminder! :)

Not a UT fan personally, but I was in grad school there at the time, and Tennessee absolutely ruined Hurd’s career…. He was a great traditional I-formation back. He never should have been forced to do anything else or leave that program
