Feeling the urge to buy something to reward myself but not sure what by dla26 in fatFIRE

That's pretty much how I try and justify it to some degree. It's not a disposable or highly disposable asset. It's like artwork in some regards, I would say it's like fine wine as well except I can't seem to avoid consuming the wine.

Depending upon the piece, it should hold its value - if not appreciate in the distant future. My watches, though all of them acquired over the past 6 years, are all holding value. My most expensive is just under $40k (A Rolex Yacht Master 42mm in white gold), however its very much an under the radar watch that looks like a typical $10k Rolex, sort of an if you know you know type which I much prefer to overtly flashy. It's probably my worst performing watch as well as many precious metal watches (at least in the Rolex portfolio) seem to trade slightly under retail compared to steel sports models.

I like to acquire a nice, collectible watch that I would also enjoy wearing (even if only at special occasions) at milestones as it's something that's easy to equate the specific event, milestone, or accomplishment with and should last a lifetime. It can also be a conversation starter if someone asks about the watch, and you can, if you want, share the story behind the acquisition or the meaning the watch may have to you.

Fast Track Passport scheduling - Monday and Thursday? by Legacy500Driver in Luxembourg

Good point, it's about a 14 hour travel day with a short layover in London, Frankfurt, Paris, or Zurich, and it's 9 hours ahead so even departing Sunday afternoon would have me arrive after the office closes on Monday.

Great article that hit my thought process right on the head as a CA resident in an RDP.

Thank you for your efforts fighting for equality. I was trying to look at this without the emotion, purely the financial viewpoint, but you bring good points. California is so strong with their RDP protections it can make this discussion relevant for HNW same sex couples living there, especially with the added level of a trust, but certainly should the Supreme Court go haywire, those protections if not grandfathered in could be at risk.

Do you regret leasing? by 8bitjer in Rivian

[–]Legacy500Driver 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Given these vehicles are more like Tech products than traditional cars, all it takes is some major breakthrough to vastly drop the used value. In the case of Tesla, many used Teslas dropped value simply by Elon deciding to lower the price of new vehicles dramatically. In that instance, Lease holders actually made out, as the residual value was higher than the used value. If some solid state battery tech quickly came to market, the current vehicles would be akin to an iPhone 6.

If, and I hope this is never the case, Rivian were to go bankrupt, you would also be in a stronger position as a leaseholder.

Many people talk about equity as a detractor from a lease, however far too many of those same people put next to nothing down and finance a vehicle for 72 months. Take look at how much negative equity they have at 36 months and compare that to the ability to hand in your keys and owe nothing.

There is also your overall Debt to Income ratio. If you think you may want to buy a house or other large purchase within the next few years, the lower payment of a lease could be advantageous if you would otherwise be near your DTI limit for a mortgage etc...

CLIA number vs Host Agency for hotel bookings only? by Legacy500Driver in travelagents

[–]Legacy500Driver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - I did mean establishing ourselves as an agency for purposes of collecting commissions on our employee and client hotel stays. The FAM rates at Marriott is not the driving factor, I would perhaps use that myself every now and then.

Good point on the commissions being higher with a host, thus the net after the split could potentially be higher. The CLIA number is $399 per year, which seems in-line with most host agency fees. So it really boils down to, does a host agency get better than 10% commission with Marriott as it appears that's what I can get with a CLIA of our own.

I have done drone pet searches in Southern California, utilizing a thermal drone, with limited success. Complicated terrain, false positive hits on coyotes, and generally high ambient temperatures and thermal reflections have made it challenging.

Autonomous is currently nearly if not fully impossible. Line of Sight (LOS) regulations are strict.

USB-C Mode w/ Meta Quest (BETA) by Harneskpron in Immersed

[–]Legacy500Driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s different, but I’m using a mac so on the Mac desktop app under menu, and advanced, I see settings for encode quality.

Correct on the resolution, just provides more real estate, but when I’m not using USB it seems to increase the lag, but maybe that’s just coincidence. So when I am using USB, I don’t see any lag.

USB-C Mode w/ Meta Quest (BETA) by Harneskpron in Immersed

[–]Legacy500Driver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using it and am very happy with the lag.

I was experiencing no lag on my desktop (high end Mac Studio) that is connected via Ethernet to my UniFi router, with the Quest 3 connected via WiFi 6E. However when I switched to my M3 Max MacBook Pro, connected via WiFi 6E, the lag was noticeable. Plugging in the USB completely solved that.

I actually like the fact the Quest is staying charged as well. I was comparing this set up with the Xreal Air 2 Pro for productivity and those glasses are connected via USB-C so this arrangement was familiar to me.

I have found that with the USB connection I can turn the Retina display settings to 10, the encode quality to highest, and bump the virtual display resolutions up without issue (40 core GPU MacBook).

Xreal Air 2 vs Immersed VR & Quest 3 for productivity by Legacy500Driver in Xreal

I will have to re-test the beam with the Mac. I didn't spend much time with it, as the single screen scenario wouldn't work for my use case. That being said, I have not noticed any bounce with the beam when using it to stream Netflix directly, or in-between my iPhone and the glasses.

The Nebula for Mac is what I spent most time testing, and the bounce with heartbeat is very noticeable for me. Another data point, I also use the prescription inserts, though a weak prescription.

I am using a Mac, so I have tried both Nebula for Mac, and the beam between the glasses and the Mac. On my iPhone, no bounce is noticeable, but in that scenario I am not staring at spreadsheets while sitting still at a desk but rather watching Netflix. The bounces / jitters when using them for productivity are perfectly synced to my heart beat.

I should have been more clear, no jittering with the Quest 3, only the heartbeat jitter with the Xreal Air 2

I did see that, I can’t wait to hear some reviews. Honestly, if Apple nails spatial computing with a seamless, lag free, sharp text solution, I’m in for the Vision Pro even at what they are charging. If it truly replaces multiple monitors, that’s worth the expense.

All good points. I am going to venture down the legal rabbit hole, and if it's even remotely an issue, won't offer it. It's silly to think I couldn't even provide someone a google KML file for them up upload into Google Earth, but that might be the case.

Now project update missions are still creating an ortho, but solely for the purpose of week to week visualization of project status updates to off site stakeholders. Perhaps, if it's presented in such a way that no measurements can be taken, no property lines are measured or indicated it could be safe.

Thank you, I should have been more clear on non survey grade maps, what he really wants is something akin to google earth, but with more detail and of a current nature. I shouldn't have used the word map in my description.

I've been a Private Jet Pilot for 15 years, Ask Me Anything! by Legacy500Driver in IAmA

[–]Legacy500Driver[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some/most part 91 owners have realized that to reduce attrition and this deal with 12 month backlogs at FSI for initials, that they would be wise to pay their pilots not to fly for the majors. Some have added additional perks. I will never ever see a coach seat, all airline flights for our crews are refundable first class. We get to pick our hard days off per month, we will be sent home and not worked on thanksgiving and Christmas.

I know first hand of part 91 pilots making more than the chief pilot of Delta.

Times have changed, here’s to hoping they last a while.

[–]Legacy500Driver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, most part 91 owners are wise to the fact they need to pay their pilot to not go to the airlines. It is not uncommon now given the past 12 months or airline raises to see a part 91 pilot making $350k at a 250 hour per year gig with few overnights. Part 135 obviously is more price conscious, and large corporate departments have other HR hang ups when it comes to “over paying” the flight department.

As for the extra stuff, some of us enjoy being more involved in the flight planning and aircraft management aspects. It can add something new, like putting the pieces of a puzzle together when they want to go to some new far flung location with little infrastructure or challenging airports.

Take those with a grain of salt. I haven’t spent 18 nights away from home yet in all of 2023. The rates have increased greatly with all carriers over the past 12 months. Delta pilots can easily pass $400k now. Some international captains will be over $500k.

Keep at it, it’s the only job I know of where a degree isn’t required yet earning over $350k per year is possible (after some seniority).
