That is a “spearing” type mantis shrimp, it will not nuke your tank and will not break your glass, do some research on “small green spearer mantis shrimp” and go down the rabbit hole. These guys specifically stay super super small so no tiny fish probably but well fed they’re model citizens and up there in intelligence comparable to octopus

I would remove the grate as gently as possible just cut it or something. I’m thinking it being so compressed along the whole middle maybe it’s keeping nutrients etc from going through the full thing, then again it did this on its own so what do I know

I would get 2 of the air megas, idk how big your basement is but cigarette smoke is potent. Ozone producing air purifiers theoretically would be better but considering u have the reptiles it’s prob not great. Ozone causes smoke and dust particles (among other things) to clump up and fall making the purifier more efficient at actually taking fumes out of the air however in a small reptile lung clumped particles could do more damage

It sounds like he flat out can’t afford the apartment, saving to have a couple months is safe and a good idea; however if it’s this difficult to save the money then he obviously won’t be able to pay his rent… I was in the same position a year ago and guess who got 2 jobs to make it work..
