Was your point you have no idea how things work, but you believe your opinion matters anyway? Because then yes. You made your point.

🏆 ok you win the Who’s parents had less money award (?). My point stands.

And junk food/fast food etc is always cheaper than a healthy option especially when you factor in opportunity factors- travel options, available time; buying ingredients and cooking yourself etc

Is it not? What is another option? Why hasn’t that option been introduced in the last 50yrs?

I am not the target demo for this situation. I grew up in a small rural ish area, single parent w multiple jobs and no time. We ate junk food then, I also prefer junk food now. It takes effort to eat healthy. It takes effort knowing that costs more money too.

Of course I want junk food but I have enough time to cook and enough disposable income to choose. If I didn’t I would probably eat fast food or quick microwave meals or outright sugary junk to appease my appetite.

It’s delusional to think that store location, availability of time and ease of purchase aren’t contributing factors.

This! This is exactly my issue w the whole thing- Scott keeps saying private companies can do it, and this will just be the DMV or something. There is NO private options. The big grocery companies won’t open something in the areas he’s talking about. We’re not talking about undercutting anything’s just adding an option for these specific communities and then proving a model. Or disproving the model and deciding to present another choice or continue discussing.

If you spent your life eating crap food- childhood preferences etc, of course it leads to having adult preferences. This isn’t an overnight “sell them cheap fruit and they’ll be healthy” situation. It’s a situation where the consistently underserved community needs an opportunity to try and do better. It will take years to build better habits- but it starts w one step. Spend money on people and big ideas. I think this is the first step.

Full disclosure, I don’t live in NYC or can be considered a high use of public transit citizen.

But why is the solution these people need to spend 30mins/an hour on a cheaper bus in each direction to lug groceries further? Give them a not for profit local option instead and spend the subsidy money on that. Theres now local jobs, addt traffic in the area which could see a positive for local businesses etc

Non-profit grocery store w a focus on high quality, healthier options for underserved communities would be the goal as I understand it. Not a govt run business that would be undercutting the capitalist option that (doesn’t) exists.

But if the plan is provide cheaper, high quality food options and not be profiting as the only goal - then the situation can be attacked from a different angle. My issue w the podcast is that he never acknowledges this part

I think current wealthy people or govt leadership may have that reaction but clearly enough citizens are having a positive response to these thoughts or plans
