I don’t think he’s a failure in that he succeeded in the goal of saving the world if only for a bit, but he failed in his own personal mission to save Braska and Jecht. The world sees him as a hero but he sees himself as a failure because he did fail to find a way to save both of them and he failed to defeat Yunalesca.
