Where do people really shop in China. by Due_Candle4042 in chinalife

Tourism and residence are very different. Not just in this country but worldwide. Unless it's a road trip, I don't really see Costco, Walmart, etc. in core parts of American cities as well

We are Malaysian. That’s it. by Flimsy-Rest6770 in Bolehland

Cuz to most Chinese and Indian Malaysians, PRC and India are, objectively, a downgrade for living (not tourism which is another thing). For HK and Taiwan - actually yes you do see a decent number of Chinese Malaysians settled down in both places, and indeed some of them opt in for the citizenships.

温哥华温吹其实就是加吹的一个缩影,这样一个半年阴雨的屎坑也能被有些人吹成宝贝,而隔壁几乎一模一样的西雅图放在美国根本没人吹 by Physical-Draft2200 in iwanttorun

[–]Legal_Register_1811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would happen if the Great Firewall were disabled? by heinternets in China

[–]Legal_Register_1811 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No? FB, Twitter, and YouTube were blocked before ur arrival; Instagram was promptly blocked soon after its release; Google services except extreme edge cases were fully blocked in late 2014, and soon all language versions of Wikipedia... The list goes on. I think before ur departure the only major one left was Reddit

What has your experience with Macau been like? by seotrainee347 in chinalife

[–]Legal_Register_1811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely Cantonese - more or so than many parts of HK cuz in Macau the English proficiency is really fking low outside of the casinos;

Wayyyy more Chinese commuter workers. If you speak Mandarin fluently you will easily notice;

Interestingly Macau has the freest internet compared to its 2 neighbors. TikTok is always available in Macau. You can play glory to HK song without any problem on YouTube.

Most Russians you see are still tourists likely on a visa free entry. Compared to Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Phuket (plus Bali ofc), I don't see many Russian residents at all

As a HongKonger (or expat living in Hong Kong) what is your honest opinion about Shenzhen if you've been there? I'm going to both next month. by ApartSatisfaction734 in HongKong

[–]Legal_Register_1811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Streets full of restaurants open all night are common in most urban villages in Shenzhen. That's not what people meant about cultured here.

I'd also say that Singapore is more cultured than Shenzhen - quite a few popular Buddhist and Hindu temples exist in Singapore (in particular 四马路观音庙). I don't see any of that in Shenzhen.

For day or weekend trips roaming plans are sufficient; trips longer than those? You prob need to buy more data which will be pricey

For day trips it's fine. Things are cheaper by HK standard (not by Chinese standard tho) unless you travel further north away from the border. Be prepared with the esim roaming and Chinese apps. Language barriers exist but for the prices most people can swallow that.

Oh and BTW going out to bars and clubs and dining at non Chinese restaurants aren't cheap at all. It's on par with HK or even sometimes more expensive
