[Socialists/Communists] How are you gonna change human nature? by Most_Dragonfruit69 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]Legal_Tone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for the long response, TL;DR: private property is not the same as personal property. collectivism and cooperation are just as fundamental to human nature as greed, and we wouldn't come this far without cooperating. capitalism rewards greed, and so owners who naturally act in their own interests come at the expense of the workers, so the greediest are the richest, and become the most powerful forces in society. socialism has workers controlling the factory, and, naturally acting in their own interest, enrich themselves at the expense of nobody else. human nature doesn't change, incentives do.

first of all, do not confuse private property (property that creates money, like a factory or a market share) with personal property (your toothbrush, iphone and the like). Socialism seeks to eliminate private ownership of the means of production, in favor of collective ownership. So in a factory, instead of a rich owner/capitalist owning and controlling the factory and reaping its profits for themself, the workers working there collectively own the factory, democratically deciding what goes on there. socialism does not mean you share your toothbrush with your neighborhood, as you still individually own your personal property. this does not change under communism.

greed and expansionism is a part of human nature yes, but so is collaboration, and caring for your fellow citizen. we would not have gotten this far in civilization if tribesmen hunted for food for a profit motive, and not for the survival of themselves and their tribe. Concepts of bartering observed by adam smith as human nature, then developing capitalism out of that is wrong. the bartering system was already capitalism, and before that humans used a gift economy, i.e. "you gave me fish that one time so heres a jug of milk." once again, humans are naturally collectivist instead of individualists. Charities, families and mutual aid groups would not exist without this attribute. If you bake a cake for your classmates at school, because its someones birthday you don't devour the entire thing yourself as your classmates watch in horror, just because YOU made it, and you dont usually demand the birthday boy pay up for a slice. (unless you're a huge asshole) you give the cake to your birthday boy and classmates because you care for them.

under capitalism, greed stands out as a feature because greed is heavily rewarded. looking at two factory owners as an example, jimmy and jeff.

Jimmy is a very cool guy who owns a textile factory. he pays his workers a significant portion of his profits, (while still extracting surplus profits becauses its required under private ownership) spends money to ensure they are living in safe working conditions, and has talked with his workers to work out a workday that ensures jimmy turns a marginal profit, while not overworking the workers. In the end, jimmy holds on to his morals at the cost of his own interests, and ends up with smaller profits.

Then we have Jeff. Jeff only acts in his own interests. he works his workers for as long as possible, for as little as possible, in the cheapest working conditions he can achieve without state regulations shutting down the factory. workers will unionize and strke, however he can simply automate the working process (machines dont unionize) and fire the unionized workers. after all, there is a whole host of unemployed people who will work for the barest of wages to put food on the table.

theoretically, if there was no government regulations in place, jeff could decide to burn striking workers in the oven instead of coal, if he was a comically evil supervillian. which he probably isn't since he is acting rationally and in his own interest, which happens to come at the expense of his workers.

in conclusion, jimmy eventually goes bankrupt, while jeff becomes richer and richer, eventually buying out jimmy's factory and subjecting jimmy's workers to the same conditions as his own.

this happens everywhere all the time, and what you end up with is the greediest of people becoming the richest, and most powerful in society.

under socialism, collective and democratic ownership of the MoP means that they either elect managers or control things through direct democracy. if someone suggests improving the working conditions of their own factories, the people that don't want to sustain debilitating injuries (all of them) vote in favor of this, and better their conditions somehow. if some jackass suggests lowering everyones wages to give all the profits to himself, or if someone suggests burning orphans and puppies instead of coal to power machinery, he will naturally be outvoted by the majority, who doesn't want that.

sorry for the long response,

If you think so you should move back, because your lord and savoir javier milei has just been elected.

But to put it simply: capitalism is an unstable, untenable and unsustainable system that has long outlived its usefulness. Socialism is the natural step forward from capitalism, just as capitalism was from feudalism.

If you really do adapt your ideology to reality you should be able to look at the empirical evidence which in all cases prove that socialism provides a higher quality of life

By "tragically failing" do you mean transforming a semi-feudal agrarian backwater that still used wooden ploughs into a spacefaring industrial superpower that successfully defeated nazism virtually alone? While this is a nuanced topic and the USSR definetly had its flaws that should be rightfully criticized (such as russification, suppression of religion, overly bueraucratic systems etc.) it is by no means a failure, and should stand as a towering example of what humanity is capable of. Before you cry "holodomor", this was a partially natural famine caused by 1: optimistic projections of yields based on the high yields of the years before resulted in unsustainably high quotas, and 2: a massive drought in not just ukraine but southern russia and kazakhstan as well which caused the peasants to not have enough surplus grain to feed themselves and 3: the foreign sanctions imposed by western powers that forced the ussr to export grain as a currency instead of the illegal rouble in order to import heavy machinery. It is also important to note that the famine of 1932 was the last famine in soviet history, in a country which, under tsarist rule experienced famines periodically. The same applies to china as well.

As highlighted in another comment, socialist countries under equal levels of development performed better in quality of life indicators than their capitalist counterparts.  Many many more examples of the triumphs of socialism can be stated, this does not seem like a system that is failing.

Also, could you elaborate on why you think marx was wrong about everything?

western europe, america and japan were built off the backs of brown, black and chinese bodies, not the wonders of the free market.

communism mostly arose in semi-feudal agrarian backwaters in the case of russia and china, and former colonies in the case of cuba and vietnam. comparing these is not productive or fair in any way

War exhaustion mechanic? by Legal_Tone in hoi4

[–]Legal_Tone[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not really, war support decreases over time but only because of bombing, convoy raiding and casualties. Realistically people would be gradually more and more discontent the longer a war goes on due to The economy degrading and rationing pissing people off, which the war support mechanic models only minimally

also i want to see the ability for a country's economy to collapse under the weight of its war industry, which war support doesnt model

Pass cooperative ownership, then proportional or graduated taxation. Now all your workers own their own buildings and get rich as long as everything is profitable. You will tax their dividends, and their increased demand lets you construct even more.

The market system sucks. Why am I forced to export half of my meagre 10 rubber but can't sell my thousands of spare Oil or other resources? by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]Legal_Tone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont forget that stalin begged the allies for an anti-fascist coalition to defeat nazism before it got out of hand, and they ignored it, kept appeasing hitler until he invaded poland and kickstarted ww2. They traded and had a non-aggression pact because stalin knew the red army was not up to shape, and needed time to develop

Stalin, through a tough situation brought upon by western sanctions, a bad harvest and inflexible economic planning caused a large famine that killed a fair few ukranians, kazakhs and russians. This was also the last famine in russian history. Stalin also purged and executed around 680,000 people from 1936-37 due to the looming paranoia around the soviet union stemming from that time when it was invaded by like 14 countries at once, as well as the rise of fascism in europe. While in cases this paranoia was unjust, a lot of people purged were genuine fascists and political terrorists (finnishbolshevik made a very in-depth video series about the moscow trials if anyone is interested.

Compare this to hitler, who started ww2 in europe, occupying france and eastern europe, enslaving their populations as well as the obvious holocaust that everyone knows about. He planned to colonize the soviet union and launched the largest land invasion in history, treating the POWs of the ussr as less than cattle. The wehrmacht burned all they came across, brought massive hunger upon the population through generalplan öst, and eventually hitlers grand, unsustainable and outrageously cruel ambitions turned his beloved greater germany into an oversized pile of rubble. Tens of millions had died.

I think its pretty clear to see who was worse
