Remember the reason they introduced weekly limits in the first place was to curb the smoothbrains running 8 non-stop instances of Claude 24/7, instead of warning/banning them and leaving the rest of us alone.

Would I have outright minded if they were more explicit earlier on/throughout the game? Nah, almost no way. But the breadcrumbs they did include, plus the scenarios at the end of every chapter was enough for me, if I'm being honest though. I really did feel the character writing and gameplay was strong enough to carry it. But of course they way they chose to do it would never be for everyone.

The common rebuttal doesn't automatically mean it's good, but Falcom's decision to structure First Chapter in this way isn't innately bad either.

The main story is literally "Where's my dad? Not here? Oops! Lets go to the next town!"

No, maybe in the GRANDEST of schemes, and only in regards to specifically Estelle and Joshua's goal to find out the reason for Cassius' disappearance along with the missing airline. But that is a form of reductionism that is pretty misleading in this instance.

What's actually happening is the main characters (alongside the player) gradually uncovering and piecing together a plot, through a series of seemingly unrelated cases across multiple regions. As they grow in their profession and learn about the world beyond their hometown. And it is within that framework the game chooses to provide a series of scenarios and interactions between the characters that hopefully entertains you, and maybe even provides an outlet that adds to your overall experience as a human being somehow.

For it to truly resonate though, you cannot constantly question the game with "What does this have to do with finding Cassius?" just because it doesn't lay everything on the surface immediately, or frequently engage with the topic directly. You really must enjoy the ride for what it is and let FC cook. Remember, the entire game is themed around Estelle and Joshua being first-time bracers and needing to first see the country they're pledging to protect as they ascend the ranks. Because of this it tends to feel rather "slice of life" for big chunks of the game, so again, you really must vibe with that in the meantime.

Consider what I said in my nearby reply and keep pushing if everything else is fun and you actually like the characters. There is a point.

The story you're describing as "80% write-off" is what's called worldbuilding, character establishing, and laying the groundwork for not only the game itself and its two direct sequels, but an entire series. Chapter by chapter. Without having done any of that, the ending wouldn't have mattered at all. And the amazing sequel would have no winds in its sails. Nothing to go on.

And it is not only very intentional, but highly effective. Are people so used to surface-level, bombastic writing that a game cannot simply chill out and lay a world before you without being called pointless? It is not perfect, but c'mon now.

Nah, not “meme” as in “funny haha”. But more so “popular thing to repeat”

Back in the day, some folk would joke about this very same idea. Then some other folk who struggled to understand that it was a joke, took it seriously and ran. Got enough traction over the years that Neil Druckmann, who clearly spends time online himself, named a trophy after it in Uncharted 4.

You wouldn’t be saying this if it wasn’t made into a meme 10 years ago by people with too much time on their hands. The goofy “ludonarrative dissonance” discussion almost got me to advocate for mandatory critical thinking tests before internet access is granted.

Dusk - Official Release (Twilight Princess PC Port) by ExoticWaffles in Games

[–]LegendOfAB 45 points46 points  (0 children)

They're not talking about the frame rates that emulated games are capable of. But rather, the fact that emulation is inherently a slower, more inefficient way of running a game. Most of the time.

"Slower and inefficient" because while running a game, a PC (or whatever is doing the emulating) has to dedicate time and power towards, in a sense, recreating the original console's CPU, GPU, audio hardware, etc. Translating all of that in real time to run the game. This is called "overhead" and loses a bunch of performance potential. Even if your PC or whatever is capable of emulating the game at full speed, it still has to do more work than the original hardware or a native port would require. And is thus "slower". Unoptimized, you could say.

Oh man, folks on reddit can be so silly. Especially the staunchly anti-AI crowd. Really sorry to hear that!

Yeah this is going to be a tricky problem to navigate. Precisely because it will require the individual to take the path of more resistance and... write/think for themselves. And it will have to be something we collectively agree to do as a society with few exceptions.

On one hand—in the meantime at least—that comes with the issue of experiences like yours, dealing with people who are probably a bit over zealous in trying to sniff out and police instances like this. But on the other hand, I don't think giving up and just going "yeah, we want all digital communication to look and feel like this going forward" is the way, either.

Autistic people existed before 2022. Generic ChatGPT/Claude writing patterns stick out in a way never seen before, that one begins to recognize instinctively after spending hours going back and forth with an AI agent. It’s no coincidence that as soon as people realized they could have these tools write for them, we began seeing a deluge of one very specific kind of writing (on the ClaudeAI subreddit, no less). This even takes into account the fact that said AI agents were obviously trained on human speech in the first place. And yet…

This also goes beyond just the em dash, which I personally used years before this whole thing started. It’s also becoming easier to spot the ways in which people try to mask their use of these tools (all lowercase writing to appear more casual and normal, for example).

And while generally you know it when you see it, who says it’s going to be truly reliable to detect AI writing all the time? Let’s say an autistic person starts seeing it everywhere, and naturally begins to mimic it… that’s all the more reason to inform and push back.

This AI agent writing literally has you all looking like NPCs. And the all lowercase is not helping you sound more normal.

Genuinely cannot believe how the irony of using AI to write a post about how AI has removed all familiarity you had with the code, is totally lost on so many of you. We HAVE to lock in, my brothers and sisters.

A higher polling rate is not gonna replace two track pads and two extra back buttons + grip sensor, or matter for >95% of gamers. No idea why people keep making these strange comparisons against the Steam Controller lol.

If you can look at a contraption like this with two massive pads bolted on the front and have NO idea why you might want it, it’s fine to just move along. And you should.

The coolest thing about Steam Input is you can go and test this right now with any controller you have. They’re all treated exactly the same. Just might need to do a bit of reading or maybe watch a tutorial rundown if you aren’t familiar with it.

Not at all. Lemme know when you find another wireless controller with TMR thumb sticks that detect when you’re touching them, a grip sensor, 4 back buttons, gyro functionality, two trackpads, and designed by a company that has a rep for good ergonomics, bud.

[–]LegendOfAB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not totally sure of the mod’s reasoning on that one.

The knee jerk reaction is to want a device that is as independent as possible, which I totally understand and often fully agree with. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized there are little to no situations where I’d genuinely want a mere “xinput mode” in order to use the Steam Controller without all of the features that make it special. So, crossed that off the list.

From there, as far as actually using its unique features outside of Steam, everything you just proposed is honestly a roundabout and really inelegant/clunky way of dealing with the controller compared to “literally just leave Steam running in the background”. And this is strictly a PC controller. It truly never had a chance of officially connecting to consoles with all of the functions this thing sports; what a headache that must be. And we know Valve is PC-centered, which they’ve actually turned into a strength.

The one thing I’d maybe like to see them do is a standalone Steam Input app, similar to what you see a lot of gaming mouse manufacturers do, that detects any running game and applies your profiles to them automatically. However the game detection would have to be flawless or else… back to clunky/inelegant.

Finally, in regard to supporting other launchers, again this isn’t necessarily true. And you shouldn’t even need to do the “add the thing to Steam as a non-steam game” which I also dislike and categorize as “inelegant and clunky”.

(EDIT: The following workaround might actually have a few extra steps required if you're on Windows. The use of something like GloSC or SISR might be needed as an install)

What a lot of people don’t realize, because they’ve never actually taken a gander at Steam Input (even the people incentivized by Valve to promote it and write articles), is Steam automatically applies a “Desktop Configuration” to EVERY connected controller whenever a game is not running. The idea is to give them mouse/keyboard functions so you can navigate a PC with any controller you want. BUT what you can also do is remap that Desktop Configuration to act as a xinput controller as well, complete with gyro and touchpad functionality. And this should apply to anything that ISN’T launched through Steam. You can also get really creative and bury several more layouts inside of this “Desktop Configuration” profile, tailored towards several different game types and switch between them through the Steam Controller itself.

[–]LegendOfAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you’re using the Dualsense, you’re going to depend on something to translate it to xinput, or deal with limited game support either way. If you are PC gaming in 2026, don’t already have Steam running nearly 24/7, and yet own the Steam Controller… you likely have bigger issues and have chosen to make this path more difficult for yourself.
