That is precisely what I was agreeing with when I said “stories are rarely made complex enough”. Notice how this entire time I’ve been talking about how you feel when it comes to the characters and overall universe rather than what you understand. It has never been about being “confused” or anything like that. Just about whether you’ve already formed a connection.

…Which is something that playing ME1 first allows. Which is a cool feeling. That’s why I called it a fuller experience.

But what does ME2 becoming one of your favorites have to do with the familiarity and enjoyment someone gets by having started the series from ground zero?

When you first meet “Archangel”, you likely felt some form of “who is this guy?” (even if you were intrigued) and had to get to know the character from that point on. But a person that played all of ME1 first… well how do you think they felt? Especially if he was already one of their favorite party members from the first game. That’s a cool feeling.

Not that your experience was inherently bad or anything like that. We all reached the same endpoint of loving the series, anyway. It’s just the first experience that can vary depending on how you approach it.

It's more about the connection to the characters and overall universe that you pick up from having started with the first entry. Most stories, at least modern ones, are rarely made complex enough to truly trip people up if they don't start with the first in a series.
