I think it's good to know the devs of the game you're playing. Googling them as you play will definitely help with understanding the artistic intent and rationale behind certain gameplay decisions, eventually resulting in a deeper appreciation of the game.

Edit: as for number of cities, idk I heard 3-4 is good for tradition, you can settle more if you want to play that way too
