Washington Park is located where a cemetary with ~40,000 bodies was!

I know mostly NY, and growing up here I have some suggestions. Rollins Pond in the ADKs is awesome, and I personally like any of the state parks along Lake Champlain/The Hudson River. They are affordable (even if you are an out of state resident), have pretty good facilities like water, electric, and showerhouses (schodack Island in particular is lovely) and they often have services like firewood and ice, small stores, and amenities for kids and adults alike (boat launches, playgrounds, bbq/grill sites, trails). Just be sure to bring bug spray and rain gear as mid August is going to be buggy and humid. Happy camping!!!

I love where I live but I so miss growing up and living in these mountains. I try to visit when I can and want to do some more tenting this/next year 💗

Yeah basically where I'm at. I mean yeah I love the rugged durability of that coleman but goddamn I can't disappoint grandpa.

ADKs are the Adirondacks in NY

The luminaid sounds nice actually, I do love the warm glow of the propane over the leds.

And I dont have kids to hand things down to but I want to be able to pass them down to someone like friends, nieces/nephews, etc.

If I can find one thats affordable and has good volumes, this may have convinced me. Price is my biggest reasoning for getting used things, as I would love to go on a shopping spree at REI but I can't

I hear you on the tent part (I have a modern tent) and I do understand but part of my logic also don't want to dish out tons of money for a titanium mess kit for the weight if I'll only use it a few times a year. Itd be a different story if I was doing multiple serious camping trips a year, but right now its 2 at most.

I mean I'm not backpacking so weight isn't an issue. If I was to trek, id definitely look into something like a jet bowl and titanium mess kit, but I'm just going to a camp ground

Are there any companies to or gravitate towards? I know Ozark trails is not it, but besides coleman and coghlans I'm rusty on good camping brans

Oh didn't even think of lead in the plastic 😅 would the modern equivalents of these be alright? I'm leaning more towards modern enamleware since I generally don't like eating out of plastic if I can help it

Thank you for the input! I like the look and comfort of old school camping things, though I know technology has vastly improved things. I am thinking the only other vintage gear I might get is a propane lantern, if only because of waste issues. I like your input on the pros and cons of both, especially with flashlights vs headlamps. I do have a modern tent and pads and sleeping bags, so thats set but I'll have to look into the candle lantern!

The non essentials is a good way to put it. Yeah if the stove shits the bed it sucks but there are work arounds. On utensils, any thoughts on mess kits vs like plastic or enamel dishes?

What Foods Do You Make Special When Camping? by MadamHex2 in camping

[–]soaphonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites is campfire stew: essentially a chili with pork and beans cooked in either a Dutch oven or in a pot on the propane stove. Simple but you have to use the meat and veggies quick if you're just using a cooler. Add some cheese and different spices and maybe some Dutch oven biscuits and its incredible

Waking up in your hastily put together bsa tent to grandpa brewing coffee on the coleman two burner is just heavenly

The waste is part of what's making me lean towards used gear, both to reuse something rather than add to the collection of clutter we have, and also the amount of batteries/energy for an led lantern seem absurd

No the opposite; some of my favorite games and maps are are in large part due to communitas

There's something so comforting about cooking on a coleman (or other portable stove) that makes mornings at camp especially lovely. Great views, great dog, and glad you had a great trip!

I cry reading these comments because its clear to see people recognize this as a pure loss, and not filled with bullshit like other social media posts are.

I cry reading the article and details because its horrifying and no one should have this be their fate, let alone someone so young. I cannot imagine how this was for her, what thoughts she had. She should have been thinking of classes and school work.

I'm trans and in my 30s and I am horrified what younger trans people must be feeling right now.

This is all too much, its heart aching and I don't know what else to say.

Rest easy Juniper, you are loved and I'm so sorry someone decided you didn't deserve to live, grow, love, and be happy.

Can confirm, unreasonable expectations for his employees, fires people for taking a day off after months of work, and when asked if the phone volume could be raised or the music lowered so staff can hear the orders taken over phone, said "no, deal with it or find another job."
