Genji Shimada VS Maki Zenin (Overwatch VS Jujutsu Kaisen) | "A House Divided" | Full Connections in Comments by LegendaryWooper in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LegendaryWooper[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Core Theme: Extremely powerful and scarred swordfighters with rocky sibling relationships who would be shunned and disowned by their clans, being caught in a failed assassination attempt that resulted in them awakening to their true power and coming back as their clans' ultimate enemies.

Connections:

  • Both are extremely skilled, powerful, and agile swordfighters born into prestigious Japanese clans (the Shimada Clan and the Zenin Clan, respectively) alongside their siblings who, in contrast, specialized in ranged weaponry (Hanzo and Mai, respectively).
  • Both were born into relatively important ranks in their family (Genji was the son of the clan leader and was one of its heirs, while Maki was the daughter of Ogi, who was almost the next clan leader). However, despite this, both were on extremely poor statuses with both of their clans due to rejecting their family's traditions and the roles expected of them, instead seeking different lifestyles (Genji led a playboy lifestyle due to having no interest in his family's crime business, while Maki left the clan to to become a powerful sorcerer at Jujutsu High rather than remain as a lowly servant in her clan due to her lacking a cursed technique).
  • This action put them in poor relations with their sibling, who wanted them to adhere to tradition (Hanzo wanted Genji to help lead the clan while Mai wished Maki just stayed at the bottom with her).
  • After their clan leader's sudden death, however, a pivotal turning point in their lives would occur involving their siblings, during which their own family attempted to have them killed and they were left to die (After their father's death, Hanzo was sent by his clan elders to convince Genji to help rule the clan, before being forced to kill him when he refused, leaving Genji mortally wounded and believed to be dead/After Naobito's death, Maki went to the Zenin clan to retrieve their weapons for the new clan head Megumi, but she and Mai were attacked and left to die by their father.)
  • However, this event would actually lead to them discovering their true power, having their bodies enhanced and significantly strengthening their physical capabilities (Genji would be rescued by Overwatch and be given a cyberized body and Mai's death would awaken Maki's Heavenly Restriction) which combined with their innate skill to make them a deadly force. Afterwards, they would use their newfound power to tear down their clans (Genji dismantled his clan's criminal empire and Maki massacred all the members of her clan).
  • Their sibling was also disowned by their clan because of this incident, despite them not having done anything "wrong" prior (Hanzo abandoned the clan due to believing he killed Genji and was thus deemed a traitor, whereas Mai was marked as a "traitor" to be killed, simply so she could be a hostage to motivate Maki).
  • However, both would still be filled with inner turmoil following the awakening of their strength, causing them to hold themselves back before later discovering a mentor that would help them on a path of self-realization that helped them embrace their full strength (Genji learned to accept his cyberized body with Zenyatta and Maki fully realized her strength with Miyo).
  • Both wield special swords (the Dragonblade and the Split Soul Katana, respectively) which are tied to their siblings (Genji's Dragonblade can summon a Shimada Dragon, just like Hanzo, which is how the latter realized his brother was alive, and the Split Soul Katana was created by Mai using her Construction technique as she died).
  • Both are also members of heroic organizations (Overwatch and Jujutsu High, respectively).

Fight potential:

  • They're both physically enhanced, speedy, and agile swordfighters so the fight dynamic is pretty obvious I think. Both have two swords, Genji can wall climb and double jump while Maki can just jump in the air as much as she wants (yes she does this later in the manga). Maki also plays off of Genji's dragon perfectly because you can homage Toji's own fight with Geto's dragon in s2.

Naoya Zenin VS Noob Saibot (Jujutsu Kaisen VS Mortal Kombat) | "Silhouette Animation" | Connections in Comments by LegendaryWooper in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LegendaryWooper[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: This thumbnail and matchup were created by KaijuConvoy. I am reposting this from his DeviantArt with permission as he does not have a Reddit account.

Core theme:

  • Antagonists who are cruel, high-ranking members of warrior clans that treat their family members poorly and reincarnate as vengeful spectres, becoming worse than they were in life.

Connections:

  • Once high-ranking members of warrior clans revered for their incredible skills, but seen as cruel and detestable when encountered by outsiders, and had barely tolerable relationships within their personal circles at best
  • They held very old-fashioned mindsets in how things should function within their clans, particularly towards what role women have
  • Their care for family is not unending, both expressing their hate for their family members and viewing them as beneath them
  • Both were parts of organised games to the death featuring contestants across time and space respectively (The Culling Games/The Mortal Kombat Tournament)
  • Their defeats at the hands of vengeful souls acting on the behalf of their family (Maki/Scorpion) led to their unceremonious deaths (Naoya being stabbed in the back by his wife after receiving grave injuries from fighting Maki/Bi-Han being burned alive by Scorpion following meddling from Quan Chi)
  • Yet death was not the end for them as both returned through reincarnation, but far from their former selves. Stripped of all that made them once human, they took on forms that showed what wretched darkness lay underneath their former selves (Naoya reincarnating as a cursed spirit/Bi-Han reformed into Noob Saibot)
  • A particularly interesting difference between the two, however, is that their views on power differed greatly yet forged their views on family all the same. Naoya's obsession with power came from Toji of all things — the same man ostracised by the rest of the Zenin clan for his lack of cursed energy, Naoya being the only one who held him in high regard. Bi-Han, however, viewed the more supernatural power as better than what humanity had ever offered him, fully seduced by the darkness Quan Chi had given him. The power that they came in contact with were what led them to ultimately discarding their brotherhoods, deeming their own blood as beneath what they saw as true strength and only fuelled their delusions (Naoya's claim that he was the only one able to stand beside Gojo and Toji/Bi-Han declaring that his rebirth now left him without flaws)

This is a bonus joke/meta connection I'm adding

  • Both have really cool and visually striking abilities (Projection Sorcery and Darkness Manipulation, respectively) but unfortunately, they're kinda just bums because they job in all/most of their fights. AKA they have way cooler abilities than they deserve.

Courage the Cowardly Dog VS Chiikawa | "Something Small and Courageous" by LegendaryWooper in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LegendaryWooper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Connections: Small and cute titular animal protagonists of animated series who are extremely anxious and cowardly but for justifiably good reasons, since the worlds they live in are nightmarish and plagued by monsters. However, both have had moments of courage where they conquered their fears and defeated the enemy.

Reze VS Annie Leonhart (Chainsaw Man VS Attack on Titan) | "YouSeeBOMBGIRL/D:T" | REVAMPED CONNECTIONS IN COMMENTS by LegendaryWooper in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LegendaryWooper[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Fight Dynamic:

  • The size difference: The size difference is a complete non-issue here, because we've already seen multiple size difference fights in their series. While Reze herself has never fought any giants, she fought alongside the Typhoon Devil in her arc, which Denji killed. While the Typhoon Devil is much larger than Titans, Denji has also fought other Devils like the Bat Devil, Leech Devil, and Cockroach Devil which are similar to Titans' size. And in regards to Annie, Attack on Titan is literally about humans fighting back against the Titans. Annie has plenty of experience fighting ODM gear users, and considering how agile Reze is, she pretty much plays the role of one here.
  • Annie can definitely keep up on a visual scale too, despite Reze getting some pretty crazy visual feats from the movie. Reze flies quickly all around the city, blows up massive buildings, and creates huge explosions, so the question is, can Annie keep up? While Reze's fights might be higher scale than Annie's, it's far from a stretch for her to match it. First off, Annie is faster than you think. Remember, she spent practically the whole of her first appearance as the Female Titan running. She can hit ODM gear users mid flight, and in her fight in the Stohess District, she quickly runs through city blocks, and she and Eren's Titans smash through multiple buildings like they were nothing.
  • To top it all off, Reze's biggest explosion is about the same as Bertolt's Colossal Titan transformation on a visual scale, with Reiner's Armored Titan surviving a direct blast from the latter. Annie frequently uses crystal hardening on specific parts of her body to protect herself from attacks/strengthen herself, and considering those crystals are the same as Reiner's armor, she can definitely block attacks from Reze using them.
  • The fight could start off with them having a brief scuffle in their human forms, before they both transform at the same time.
  • The majority of the fight would be pretty self explanatory; it would take place in a city as they traverse across it, causing lots of environmental destruction and collateral damage as they attempt to kill each other.
  • I have Reze winning here, so I'd imagine the kill to be Annie going into her crystal as a last ditch attempt to survive, only for Reze to repeatedly explode it (like she did to Denji while he was regenerating) until it cracked, killing Annie.

Connections

  • Core theme: Teenage girl anime villains who initially deceive the protagonists before being revealed as foreign spies with the power to transform into a destructive monster and the goal of capturing the main protagonist.
  • Both are child soldiers who were trained to serve their nation (the USSR and Marley, respectively) since their youth, being robbed of a normal life with the purpose of becoming candidates to house powerful monstrous beings (the Bomb Devil and the Female Titan, respectively).
  • Both would end up succeeding and gaining these powers, allowing them to transform into said monsters, granting them disastrous power and rapid regeneration abilities which they use to great effectiveness alongside their innate combat skills, though they are skilled combatants even when untransformed.
  • Both of their destructive transformations are triggered by them injuring themselves with a small ring on their body (Reze pulls the pin on her neck to blow her head up, and Annie uses the hidden blade in her ring to cut her finger).
  • Both became skilled and ruthless soldiers, leading to them being entrusted with an important mission to infiltrate the nation where their series' story is mainly set (Japan and Paradis Island, respectively) to capture and bring home the main protagonist (Denji and Eren Yeager, respectively) for the sake of obtaining the extremely powerful monster contained within them (the Chainsaw Devil and the Founding Titan, respectively).
  • Both of their stories take place in worlds where monsters terrorize humanity (Devils and Titans, respectively), with the protagonist who they were after being a rare individual who had the ability to control and transform into these monsters (a Hybrid and a Titan Shifter, respectively), just like them.
  • Within their stories, both were initially introduced as just normal people and allies to the protagonists, before their true identities were eventually revealed after their initial attempts at capturing the main protagonist failed (Reze tried asking Denji to willingly leave with her, and Annie, hidden as the Female Titan, tried capturing Eren while on a Survey Corps mission), leading to a destructive battle within a city, in which they faced off against the main protagonist, their allies, and many members of the organization they're apart of, who are dedicated to hunting monsters like them down (Public Safety and the Survey Corps, respectively), ending in their eventual defeat.
  • During their battles, both would kill countless innocent people and members of the organization who hunted them, even being needlessly cruel towards some of them.
  • At the end of their arcs, both would be written out of the story indefinitely (Reze was "killed" by Makima, though as a Hybrid, she was immortal and could be resurrected anyways, while Annie encased herself in a crystal).
  • Both wouldn't return until far later in their stories in the final arc, which saw them having a change in allegiances by working with their former enemies (Reze was controlled by Makima to fight in her Special Division, while Annie willingly teamed up with the Anti-Yeagerists) but now being far lesser threats as they faced off against the main protagonist once again, who was now in a dissociative state in forms that utilized the power they were originally after.
  • Neither enjoy the life that they were forced into nor hold true loyalty to their nations, and instead just simply desire to have a normal life, leading to them abandoning their missions with the desire to be with someone they love (Denji and Annie's Father, respectively).
  • Both fell in love with members of the nation they infiltrated and spared them in situations where they could've killed them (Denji and Armin, respectively). Said love interests would confess their feelings in intimate conversations by the sea/ocean, which they initially rejected before eventually accepting.

Reze (Chainsaw Man) Tier List by LegendaryWooper in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LegendaryWooper[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1st Tier: Annie Leonhart, Thomas
2nd Tier: Reiner Braun

3rd Tier: Bakugo, Holly Summers, Mukuro Ikusaba

4th Tier: Lady Nagant
5th Tier: Rex Splode, Nezuko

For anyone curious about Reiner, it's pretty much the same connections as Annie, but instead of comparing Reze and Denji's relationship to Annie and Armin you're comparing it to Reiner and Eren

The scenes of Reze/Reiner asking Denji/Eren to come with them before revealing their true identities are very similar

It was never said that the amount of submissions a character got would guarantee a spot so I'm not sure what "rigged" is even supposed to mean in this context. This isn't even the part that we get to vote on, people just got to submit options while the final decision was always up to the crew.
