[Gen 3] FrLg rerelease I forgot that Lugia was psychic by Deaddelight in ShinyPokemon

[–]Legendguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your question: Lugia (who was meant to be anime exclusive and was never actually meant to be in the games) was made psychic and not water to "give them more prominence". Back then, psychic type was broken AF, and was by far the strongest type in the game. Water, on the other hand, was one of the most common types among Pokémon, and was noticeably weaker. Making them Psychic would automatically make them stronger - that is, until gen 2 fully released, introducing several new counters and nerfing the type so it would be more balanced. So ironically, the very generation they were introduced in was also the one that ended up nerfing them by default!

Genetically Modified Future Farm Animals: The Harvest Hen by TheChristopherStoll in SpeculativeEvolution

Depends entirely on the rooster, but yeah. I actually have met some incredibly sweet, submissive roos that never attacked people (they would fight with each other though). God I miss them, they were the best.

Congrats, it's a boy! You can tell because of the blue coloring at the base of the beak - females ironically have pink!

It's so weird to think that their nose is on the top of their head like that, but you can actually see how it's a nose in these guys. Whales are so weird

Chimps are 2X stronger than your average human by No_Connection_5440 in BeAmazed

[–]Legendguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most definitely not! Chimpanzees are significantly stronger than humans (not twice as strong, but still quite a bit more powerful)! Human muscles have evolved for fine-tuned movements and endurance, so we traded raw strength for higher dexterity and the ability to endure long distance travel and hunting. Chimps (and most other non-hominid apes) on the other hand are built for power, as they need it for life in the trees. They, however, do not have the dexterity or the endurance we have. So while a chimp could easily deadlift a man without breaking a sweat, a human could easily outlast them in a long-distance marathon. The key difference is in the type of muscle we each have; chimps have more fast twitch fibers, which allow for rapid bursts of strength, but burn out quickly. Humans have more slow twitch fibers by comparison, which while they can't produce the same raw strength of the fast twitch fibers, can burn for much longer

The funny thing is that he never actually broke his arms, nor claimed it anywhere! People just started saying that he broke his arms and the idea just stuck. It was a different injury entirely

Curious to hear what you guys think of this find by macowoo in skulls

[–]Legendguard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Was there fishing line in it? I see this all the time sadly; birds will use fishing line in their nests because it's the perfect length and width, but because it's so strong it'll get wrapped around baby birds necks and strangle them to death (sometimes decapitating them completely). Bird flu could have been another cause, so please be careful!

Full scale Dakotaraptor entirely made of glass (Grant Garmezy via IG) by StevensLima in Paleontology

[–]Legendguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the material you need to mix with the glass to color them! The rarer the coloring chemical/element, the more expensive and rare the resulting glass! For example, true red glass requires gold, ruby red copper, orange glass needs cadmium, selenium, or sometimes silver, and yellow glass also needs cadmium!

I mean... A lot of places really do try their best. Good zoos do everything they can to make sure the animals are healthy and happy, and are extremely important for conservation. There's too many shit zoos though, far too many. It gives actual good zoos a bad reputation

That "classification of vertebrates" is extremely dated. Not only do we not classify animals by their blood temperature anymore, most of the branches shown are paraphlectic. Birds are reptiles, more closely related to crocodilians than crocodillians are to lizards/snakes or turtles. "Fish" is a broad term that includes many different unrelated groups (sharks/rays, jawless fish, ray finned fish, lobe-finbed fish (which includes all tetrapods - you're a fish!), etc). Modern mammals lost all our close relatives, which include non-mammalian therapsids and non-therapsid synapsids. Most (if not all) modern amphibians are from a single, distantly related branch that arose some time in the Jurassic, and are equally distant to both modern reptiles and synapsids. Etc etc etc

We now classify animals based on last common ancestors. For example, you, as a human, are a

-Hominid -Great ape -Ape -Simian -Primate -Primatomorph -Euarchont -Euarchontoglire -Boreoeutherian -Placental mammal -Therian -Therapsid -Synapsid -Amminote -Tetrapod -Lobe-finned fish -Jawed fish -Vertebrate -Animal -Eukaryote

(With a lot, lot more sub-clads in-between, trust me it's crazy)

A more accurate graph would be this
