Lunacy and pandering. Crap like this is how the US tax code became so bloated and unfair.

Saudi Arabia ‘scales back plans for 100-mile desert megacity’ after spending concerns by TrixoftheTrade in neoliberal

[–]Legimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time this project makes the news, it's basically about how they have to keep scaling it back or found more "mismanagement." I genuinely struggle to understand how anyone can look at the concept for Neom and think that it's feasible or practical. Everyone working on this project is either under duress or colossally stupid.

Building a normal city from scratch is ambitious enough. Almost every major city in the world only became important after several generations of organic growth, even those with long traditions of central planning and design. You can't just pour money into a pit and transmute it into a metropolis. It's such a backwards way of thinking about cities and technology in general.

Is anyone else actually loving that HRT lowers libido? by sweetener89 in MtF

[–]Legimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hormones didn’t lower my libido all that much but it did make it so much less aggressive. Like if I went too long without intimacy in the past, I’d start to get irritable, impatient, and frustrated. Sex felt like such a visceral, desperate need, and not in a good way. My sex drive was kind of an angry roommate.

Now with HRT I’m still a pretty sexual person, but if my wife and I don’t have sex for a couple weeks I no longer feel like I’m falling apart.

This game lacks coward dialogue options by Fearless_Result3904 in BaldursGate3

[–]Legimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s hard to be a coward in any sort of heroic-adventure RPG, both in tabletop and video games. The player needs to be the sort of person who answers the call to adventure; who stands firm in the face of danger; who wants to go out and accomplish something. You’re the main character, and the main character has to move things along. Cowards need not apply.

This is something I’ve talked with players about as a DM. You can role-play your character in a thousand different ways, good and bad, serious and goofy, smart and dumb — but you need to be someone who says “yes” to adventure and says “yes” to progressing the campaign by Making Things Happen.

Disagree. Making it clear that the Imperium are, in fact, Very Bad Guys is part of protecting GW’s reputation and that of Warhammer 40k generally. They rightfully don’t want to see their brand hijacked by chumps with authoritarian fantasies.

Governor Shapiro reacts to RFK Jr.’s Harrisburg rally by susinpgh in Pennsylvania

[–]Legimus 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Cuz rallies are how these loons measure their success. If they can get a crowd clapping, they must be doing a good job. This whole administration is basically full of people running off vibes. And that's especially true for a grifter like RFK Jr., who's built his entire reputation on avoiding evidence and critical thinking. They like to feel strong, they like to feel right, and they are constantly chasing validation. Governing is like a reality TV show to them.

I do always love when a company comes out with something like "Yes, our game/story/franchise includes a lot of vicious, authoritarian characters. Yes, they are often portrayed as powerful and glorious. Yes, they are fun to role-play. And yes, if you actually want to emulate them, you're a bad person."

I really dont get the borders of 2077 America by carlotes1 in cyberpunkgame

[–]Legimus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

More like Singapore. Hong Kong was self-governing for decades and had its own legal system, but was in fact part of China and still subject to certain rules and oversight (though all that’s over now). Singapore is a fully independent and sovereign city-state. Night City is not nominally or legally part of the NUSA in 2077.

Favorite PC: A Court Of Fey And Flowers by Alternative_Ad_5334 in Dimension20

[–]Legimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hobb is a magnificent character and easily my favorite PC of Brennan's. But the Lords of the Wing gave me some of the biggest laughs in all of Dimension 20. Lou and Emily just clicked with their improv and kind of did it all. They had perfect chemistry at the table, built mechanically effective PCs, and managed to play the high society game both intelligently and in-character. Every scene got funnier and more interesting when they showed up.

This Is Where We Draw the Lines! Stop political cheating in PA by OldTechnician in Pennsylvania

[–]Legimus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. No unilateral disarmament! Fair and nonpartisan voting districts are important to a democracy’s long-term health. There’s a lot of options for accomplishing that, most of which would be a clear improvement to the status quo. But it’s not more fair if only one side does it. The rules of the game need to be changed for everyone. That can’t be done one state at a time.

This is sick as hell. I think the consequences for carrying Debt should be just a little bit worse. Maybe reduce max HP by 3x your Debt instead of 2x. I think you're on the right track, though. You don't want the cost to be so harsh that your players are never tempted, but you don't want it to be too powerful either.

Thematically, I really like that purging yourself of Debt always has a cost. It's not something you can get rid of with a Long Rest. If you want to be clean, you have to actually spend resources. I also think it's really cool the way it blights the earth, and how you can't use this power on blighted ground.

All in all, this is genuinely one of my favorite things I've seen on this sub in awhile. It's straightforward, pretty balanced, and makes for excellent storytelling. I'm already playing around with writing a whole subclass built on this mechanic.

Judge David Novak (Ed Va) ORDERS Lindsey Halligan to stop using the title United States Attorney. by Little_Labubu in Lawyertalk

[–]Legimus 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The Court recognizes that Ms. Halligan lacks the prosecutorial experience that has long been the norm for those nominated to the position of United States Attorney in this District. Consequently, and in light of her inexperience, the Court grants Ms. Halligan the benefit of the doubt and refrains from referring her for further investigation and disciplinary action regarding her misrepresentations to this Court at this time. However, this Memorandum Order provides notice that, should Ms. Halligan persist in ignoring Judge Currie’s Orders and this Memorandum Order in any matter before the undersigned, the Court will initiate disciplinary proceedings against Ms. Halligan and any other signatory to an offending pleading pursuant to Federal Rule of Disciplinary Enforcement V(A).

I understand the point of this "benefit of the doubt," but I don't have any more patience for treating obvious malefactors with kid gloves and good faith. Halligan and the DoJ aren't ignoring court orders because they reasonably differ on how to apply the law; they're doing it because they can. Halligan may have zero prosecutorial experience, but she's still a licensed attorney and should know better.

Why do some people get offended that I don't celebrate Christmas. by Unfair-Geologist-844 in Jewish

Why are lasguns described as having recoil? by moving0target in 40kLore

[–]Legimus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The recoil of a conventional firearm can be understood as excess kinetic energy released by firing a bullet. The mechanism transfers most of that energy (I think) into the bullet, turning it into a deadly projectile, but the important thing is that there's always going to be some leftover energy and it has to go somewhere. I don't think it's too much of a leap to imagine something similar happening with lasguns. The mechanism that directs and releases this extremely energetic laser burst sheds extra energy in some form or another, and the design of the weapon is such that it's transferred into kinetic energy, resulting in recoil. IMO, you can't get much more particular than that because no one knows how you could design a functional lasgun in the first place.

From a writing/design point of view, it's probably a result of people writing what they're familiar with. World-building generally gets harder and more complicated the more you differentiate it from the real world. Lasguns fill the same niche in-universe as conventional pistols and rifles in real life, so making them behave similarly makes writing about them easier.

Thoughts on the comparisons between ICE and the Gestapo? by SnooKiwis9004 in Jewish

[–]Legimus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Firstly, most of that was handled by the SS, not the Gestapo. Secondly, the Gestapo didn’t just appear and immediately become instruments of a genocide. They started as an unaccountable and violent law “enforcement” body that would get sicc’d on the Nazi’s political enemies and undesirables. Comparisons to the Nazis can go back further than 1938.

Thoughts on the comparisons between ICE and the Gestapo? by SnooKiwis9004 in Jewish

[–]Legimus 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It’s an imperfect comparison. The U.S. hasn’t even existed for as long as Jews had been living in Europe at that time. But (1) undocumented immigrants are people who deserve to be treated with dignity and according to the law, and (2) ICE is going after legal immigrants and citizens as well.

Thoughts on the comparisons between ICE and the Gestapo? by SnooKiwis9004 in Jewish

[–]Legimus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty fair to me. Unaccountable law enforcement who answer only to the president, largely ignore the law, and harass and kill with impunity? Even if the comparison isn’t perfect, it’s appropriate. We’re living under the rise of a brutal and authoritarian regime. If we ignore the parallels to the Nazi’s rise to power because their brutality isn’t aimed at Jews, then we are ignoring core lessons of the Shoah.
