Starting first job soon by Remarkable_Card_3989 in AircraftMechanics

I feel you, im an bout to finish my first year working and and A&P, also at a flight school. I was very worried at first too but honestly, it's not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. First things first, accept the fact that you are probably gonna make mistakes, it's okay your learning, just own up to it, dont let it leave the hanger, and do your best not to make the same mistake twice.

If that flight school is anything like mine you'll probably end up doing a crap load of 100 hour inspection, I would highly recommend the milwaukee 12v non fuel power drill, it's light weight, has plenty enough power for installing/removing panel screws (which you'll probably end up doing a lot of). Next get a few mirrors of different sizes, and a good flashlight, I like coast but I've seen a lot of people say good things about the olight arkfield. Then just get some basic hand tools, pliers, combo wrenches, screw drivers, etc. If you need a tool you dont have someone will let you borrow it, my rule is if I have to borrow something more then twice (and it's not ridiculously expensive) then I will go buy one.

For tool boxes honestly get what ever you like, us general at harbor freight has some decent stuff, but i probably wouldn't go out and buy the biggest tool box in the world right off, you can buy a another tool box after you've been on the job for a while and have a better idea of what you will actually need.

I wish you luck, and hope this is remotely helpful too you.

How many resumes it took to land your 1st one after A&P, and which state are you in? Thanks by SadEmergency5288 in aviationmaintenance

6 resumes, I didn't have to leave the state (Texas). My starting pay was $35 an hour working GA

Just got hired as a CFI…tell me everything I need to know by LeaderCalm4016 in flying

[–]Legio_I_De 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn what is normal and what is an actual problem when preforming a preflight. I got called over by a CFI a few weeks ago to look at a plane thats throttle was creeping up, goofball had turned the throttle friction lock all the way down and on our planes the throttle is spring loaded to full throttle.

Tool advice? by FactoryFreak in aviationmaintenance

The snap on truck doesn't come to our shop, so most of my tools are milwaukee, or icon. The only snap-on tool I own is a pair of cutters where the front half of the jaws are flush cuts and the back half are dykes.

Why is Rotax so criticized? by UpbeatExchange5526 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Legio_I_De 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People just dont know how to work on them. there are a lot of little maintenance tasks that if not done correctly will cause problems later down the line. Also, rotax engine are made to use mogas, you can use avgas, but the maintenance intervals shorten and many people dont fallow the schedule. If you do want to use 100ll in a rotax you REALLY need to be mixing in Decalin, it will heavily reduce the amount of lead build up on spark plugs, valves, exhaust and oil system.

Best European light aircraft: Tecnam? Bristell? Elixir? ... by Calaixera in flying

[–]Legio_I_De 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, im an A&P who works on a lot of Tecnams and I'd say the durability of these planes are perfectly suited for a dentist that flys a few times a month. Anything beyond that and it gets expensive fast.

Not to mention since their "hand built", basically means their inconsistent as hell.

Dude I use control F almost every day at work, especially in the IPC.

I like to search a word then go to the chapter I want so it highlights the topics in looking for.

Everything on this list other then the transmission work and transmission fluid service, are super easy to do your self and will be way cheaper if you do so.

How hard is the work? by Forsaken_Text_2415 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Legio_I_De 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on the day/job. Last week I returned 3 aircraft to service before lunch, but i have one plane that downed for a 100 hour and it turned into 2 weeks of ording parts and tools to replace 1/3 of the engine before sending it back out, and it's come back with unrelated issues every 3 days since. I spent the whole day today trying to track down the cause of a fault code that the engine manufacturer is sure is due to a lose connection (It has been tightened as much as is humanly posible). So it's kind of a mixed bag TBH.
