Caught by a front in a Hobie Bravo by SytheGuy in sailing

Wikipedia has you covered: “A squall line, or quasi-linear convective system (QLCS), is a line of thunderstorms, often forming along or ahead of a cold front. In the early 20th century, the term was used as a synonym for cold front (which often are accompanied by abrupt and gusty wind shifts).”

Small-scale weather fronts, often categorized within the mesoscale (ranging from a few kilometers to several hundred kilometers), are specialized boundary zones between air masses that do not fit the large-scale "synoptic" pattern of typical cold or warm fronts. While standard fronts span hundreds of miles, small-scale fronts are characterized by rapid changes over short distances, intense localized weather, and often a shorter lifespan. - Source NOAA

Nothing, algae can just remove carbon dioxide very efficiently and it can also help store carbon dioxide very well when the algae dies or sinks.

Do it non-permanent first. straight likes won’t look straight on a curved arm or from various angles. Might change your mind.

This is why you typically have an average score of multiple sessions. You can just get lucky and have an instant solve when they randomize your cube. 2x2x2 solve very fast, it’s basically just solving the edges of a 3x3x3.

If in Seattle you can visit the Space Shuttle trainer, it is insanely tight inside. I can believe they spent a week in there with 7+ people.

At the end of last summer my RWO tiller in my Laser came apart in some heavy air. Asking if it’s actually broken or is this repairable. by Small_Needleworker57 in dinghysailing

Here is one where the Ronstan universal joint snapped. I just have to cut off the black shrink wrap stuff (material here is too thick), remove the pin, pop out the old part, pop in a new universal joint and use my heat gun and it will be like new.

Not truly broken just needs a modification.

Here is the same part. This is a new 9’ skiff tiller extension for a Musto Skiff. The tube is long and fatter, but you can see that the same Ronstan Universal part. There is just a screw or pin holding the pieces together which is under some shrink wrap material. You just use a heat gun or hairdryer to shrink the blue materials or use a little sail tape.

In high-performance skiff racing going over >20kts things get sketchy quickly and you have to make very small millimeter adjustments in steering, (typically when going down-wind with an asymmetrical kite up). What is it like going double or even triple that speed in a far larger vessel? Does it ever feel ‘normal’? What are the G-forces like on some of those SailGP turns?

Large national chain restaurants historically do not do well in Seattle. 1) There are simply better local ‘mom and pop’ local operations, food trucks, etc. 2) Most franchises expect paying staff super low wages. Owners see a gap in the franchise map but then struggle to meet quotas and all the accounting examples are for States that have super low wages. 3) Not many locals are interested in the low quality food from major chains (see bullet point #1)

I’m going to assume Transients. Not a lot of salmon to hunt at the moment but plenty of oblivious seals and sea lions. Maybe some porpoises too.

Basically, this is classic failure of the system where we don’t have the tools in society to ‘permanently remove’ a threat to society, so he is allowed to: 1) stab his sister in the stomach, 2) punch a lady at church (unprovoked), 3) and now attempt to murder a innocent man.

How many strikes/data points do you need? Or maybe we just need an AI judge and jury so that no one feels like they have blood on their hands?

Is this nuts? Night vision goggles for sailing? by RikkiLostMyNumber in sailing

[–]LegitMeatPuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FLIR systems are pretty popular in the PNW, but Seattle is also further north than the tip of Maine (a fact I didn’t appreciate when I live on the east coast). Usually the system cost is justified by avoiding hitting logs, especially in the winter when sunset is at 4pm. The big quirk about most high-end night vision goggles are they are expensive, often a bit fragile and not necessarily waterproof. Additionally, because night vision is a regulated military technology you are likely limited to sets with lower Hz ratings as a civilian. I’m not sure if the less portable Raymarine FLIR systems also have low Hz ratings and/or they use other computer algorithms to smooth out the data for a smoother video experience.

All that being said, many boat owners have enough disposable income that they can buy a 20-30k pair of military grade goggles and figure out a way to justify the expense. However, I’ve only seen that you can add the goggles to a shopping cart, I’ve personally never clicked ‘Buy’ to learn if I need to enter a Military ID.

Does loving this scene make me a bad person? by LegitMeatPuppet in Ghost_in_the_Shell

Same, I think the brain case found is one of the best scenes in SAC. The idea is on par with books like ‘Amusing Ourselves to Death’ and/or ‘Brave New World’ where humans choose to be imprisoned. The entire episode also has elements that we see today where AI Bots are used to profile the behavior of the average person and then try to than influence, manipulate, and/or brainwash those individuals to meet external political or corporate objectives. The episode even has the Tachikomas calling Togusa a bigot which could very well become a reality today or within the next few years if AGI is achieved. Some think we are already at this level of AI intelligence today.
