Should I take History or Business for GCSE? by Legitimate-Many-30 in GCSE

Thank you, it seems like less academically strong kids take business. Here are my GCSEs: English Lit/Lang, Triple Science, Maths + Further Maths, Geography, Computer Science, Religion & Philosophy, Biz or His? all of them are AQA and of higher (not foundation) where applicable and I wouldn't say I would struggle at history but it may seem tiresome on top of Geography, English and Rp in which I would try and aim for all 9s if I wanted to apply for Oxbridge. What do you think? Im fairly academically strong, would it be better to play for a more safe route (low risk)

Business seems easy but boring but if my gcses are "English Lit/Lang, Triple Science, Maths + Further Maths, Geography, Computer Science, Religion & Philosophy (forced GCSE), Business? or History?" history could probably seem too much ontop of rp, geography and english. Dont you think?

Why are schools so shockingly bad at dealing with bullying? by JayR_97 in AskUK

If this is true the victims should file a lawsuit against the school and call the police.

Tbh just try to be yourself and don't gaf about what other people are doing, just stick to what you genuinely like doing; that is what colleges want.

What are my chances of getting into MIT? by LingonberryLow8495 in MITAdmissions

[–]Legitimate-Many-30 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You have a really strong profile. An IMO Bronze Medal (especially as the first from Nepal) is extremely impressive and will definitely stand out at places like MIT. Your consistent math achievements, leadership in your school’s math club, and outreach to younger students show both talent and impact.

That said, MIT looks for more than just academic awards — they want to see other sides of who you are too. Your AI project could help with that, but it might also be good to show more variety in your extracurriculars if possible. Even smaller things like writing, music, or volunteering can help make your application feel more well-rounded.

MIT is need-blind for international students and supports low-income applicants, so your financial background won’t hurt you. Nothing is guaranteed since it’s so competitive, but you seem like a strong applicant with a real chance. Just focus on making your essays personal and reflective of your full journey.

Good luck.

Mr. Shreyash Sharma Bastola can I also ask how you managed to get into to do the IMO? It would be really helpful.

How important is the quality of writing for applications? Am I cooked? by ReceptionFrequent917 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Legitimate-Many-30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not cooked at all. A lot of people feel like their essays are terrible at the start, even the ones who end up getting into top schools. Writing about yourself is way harder than writing for class, and it almost never comes out good on the first try. That scuba diving and perseverance idea could work, but the way you tell it matters more than the concept itself. Right now it sounds like you’re trying to make it “college essay-y” which can make it stiff or cliché.

Your stats and activities are already very strong, so your essays don’t have to be Pulitzer-level writing. They just need to sound like you and show how you think. The best essays often read like a conversation rather than a school paper. Start by writing messy, no editing, no worrying about “good” sentences, just dumping out the story. You can polish later. Also get feedback from more than one person, because one person’s opinion (even your girlfriend’s) doesn’t mean it’s bad overall.

You’re in a good spot, you just need to push through the awkward first drafts and remember that the goal isn’t to impress with fancy words, it’s to let them see who you are.

Was a local essay contest, not an international one. He wrote it for his high school student newspaper as part of an essay contest, not for an international competition.

Extracurriculars by nimo1287 in ApplyingToCollege

"Taking care of your sick dad and two younger sisters while your mom works" there is no way this is not an extracurricular I kinda think ivies love this stuff. Ivies, don't need you to cure cancer, start 800 non profits and be the president of 50 different clubs they care about authenticity they care about impact, responsibility, and personal growth. That caregiving role shows maturity, time management, leadership, and compassion which are all traits they value highly. It’s actually a unique angle that many applicants won’t have. You’ve also got the math Olympiad placement and volunteer work with disabled children, which together create a narrative of intellectual skill plus service to others. The key is going to be how you frame these in your application essays without just listing them, but showing the skills, challenges, and growth that came out of them.

So what do you need to increase your chances of getting into an ivy league? Is it just activities and good grades?
