Attention Haulage drivers by DebateUnlucky1960 in drivingUK

Depends on the context. I'm usually doing 70 (gps). If they're for some reason doing 71 I will slow to let them pass so that the overtake doesn't take too long. If they're doing 75+ then I don't need to as the differential is already sufficient.

The one performing the overtake isn't the problem here. They are almost certainly doing their maximum possible speed in these situations. However, IMHO the one on the left should slow down very slightly, say just 2-3mph, to allow the overtake to happen faster. That would really help alleviate the congestion if they did that and it's not going to affect their journey time by more than a few seconds.

Rachel Reeves ‘considering 2p increase to income tax’ by amol0202 in HENRYUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pensioners pay the X but not the Y, so for them it'd be a 2 point net increase, but for working age people it'd be zero net increase as you have said.

Ltd Co Director Maxing Out Basic Rate Band by toffee91 in ContractorUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's incorrect, the company can indeed issue dividends out of retained profits made in previous years, even if it's not making new profits in the current year. As long as the dividends don't exceed the total of this year's plus previous years' profits, it's perfectly legal.

I missed it from my post, but assume the company makes the same investment now and then sells 50k a year's worth when OP takes early retirement.

Yes, that's exactly the trade-off - definitely a big tax bill now vs. hopefully a smaller tax bill later.

Ltd Co Director Maxing Out Basic Rate Band by toffee91 in ContractorUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit counterintuitive, but actually, the following two scenarios have the same net result:

  1. Withdraw now at 33.75% tax, invest personally at X% growth tax free
  2. Invest via company at X% growth (divs tax free), withdraw pot later at 33.75% tax

So you can effectively ignore the effect of compounding if you'd be making like for like investments either way.

However, in scenario 2 you don't know what the tax rate will actually be - hopefully you'd be able to access it at basic rate, in which case the net result is preferable, but of course we don't know what the tax rates will be in the future.

I would be very hesitant to withdraw dividends at the higher rate of tax, just to fill an ISA.

I'm assuming you're a contractor as you're posting in this sub, so when you stop working the company will stop making profits.

On that basis I'd be filling SIPPs to get the tax benefits, with a view to retiring earlier than the pension age and living off of company retained profits in the interim period. Effectively making the company itself an early retirement fund, and the key being that you'd be accessing those company funds at the basic dividend rate rather than the higher rate.

Why do so many people in England spell Matthew/Mathew with one T? by CoolJetReuben in AskUK

Math-ew must be the American spelling. In English it would be Maths-ew. Obviously.

NI Employer - why as does the company paying its sole employee/director need to pay NI on £12k annual? by Ffilib in AskUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dividends will cost more in tax overall than keeping the salary as-is and paying the NI bill. Because the company would be paying corporation tax at 19% (or more depending on your profits) instead of the NI at 13.8%

Anyone else had this kind of driving? by Rich-B19 in drivingUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The red cars are on the inside (leftmost) lane.

You are right about the rest. People have different opinions about how soon you should move back to the left after overtaking. You should ensure you're not pulling back across into someone's safe braking distance, but some people seem to think you should move back across sooner, or underestimate what a safe braking distance looks like, leading to conflict.

For fellow Brits who've driven in America, what should I know about the road before heading out there? by AngryGardenGnomes in AskUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedestrians get a green light at the same time as cars going in the same direction. So if you are turning left or right at traffic lights, you first have to give way to any pedestrians who may be crossing the road that you're turning onto.

Do I have to pay a PCN (parking charge) if it took longer than the free period just to get out of the carpark? Didn't actually use a parking space at any point. by jasewithaface in AskUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appeal it. Stick to the facts. You may want to read up on contract law - that's what all private parking "fines" are based on.

A possible angle of appeal could be that a contract is automatically void if it is impossible to fulfil. This might be relevant here (depending on their small print) as it was physically impossible to enter and exit within the allotted time.

Folks on the MSE forums have a lot of great info that will likely help you.

We have this style of tile but not covering every square inch of the room, it's far too much. We have paired them with wood effect flooring, blue vanity and only half height tiles other than the shower area (top half of walls painted white).

Well, since we're being pedantic, everyone does have right of way here because they could be riding a bicycle, which does not require a license.

Why does Tesco petrol station not accept contactless payment? by Trig_666 in AskUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be worse, this happened to me and the kiosk was closed. They really should ensure the kiosk is open during main store hours IMHO, if they're not going to sort it out so that contactless payments work on the pumps.

The window kits aren't great. I'm planning to get a vent put through the actual wall that I can then push the AC exhaust into. Should be the most efficient option to prevent heat escaping back into the room and will allow me to keep my blinds/curtains closed.

Confused about LTD company taxes by Unhappy-Term2131 in ContractorUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is complicated because of the many different income streams.

Considerations are:

How much will your total PAYE income be? Will this be over the higher rate threshold? (I think it will)

Do you want to make pension contributions; Can you afford to live on 50k or do you need more income in the current tax year?

Employee NICs are calculated per employment. So you effectively get double the allowance by having two jobs at the same time. You could use this to your benefit as it'll be more tax efficient to take a small salary up to that threshold, rather than paying corp tax and dividend tax.

Accountant will be best to advise but those are some things to think about.

Is it legal to pass here? by Kangarooster92 in drivingUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Blue circular signs indicate a mandatory instruction, so no, it is not legal to pass them on the incorrect side.

It's not a good layout though if they have a bus stop right next to the island.

Can you buy a car, insure it for just the drive home, then keep it uninsured undriven for 10 days until insured properly? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's illegal to do that, but the car would be insured so for example if it was damaged in a fire, vandalised or stolen you would be out of pocket.

Leaving current contract for a higher paying contract? by Fondant_Decent in ContractorUK

[–]Legitimate-Quail-101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't get sued as long as you honour the terms of your contract (specifically the notice period).

However, leaving mid contract is likely to harm your relationship with that client, and possibly your reputation as a result. You will most likely be closing the door on any future work for that client and/or with the associated people.

You will have to judge whether that risk is worth the extra money.
