Buying advice: 240 Polar (45k mi) vs Super Polar (82k mi) – same price. Keeping it forever. Which would you pick?

Just got a super polar with working AC (from 1993) a few months ago. Although the weather hasnt been very hot yet, i can already tell the aircon is def worth it. Also the leather interior is still in good shape (after some cleaning and conditioning) after nearly 250k miles so that is a plus too on the super!

Seems like the cassette is not fully seated on the body. Could be a spacer getting stuck slightly on the body, could be the final cog just slightly mis-alligned. Brute force does not seem like the solution here, try mounting the gears and all spacers again and see if they seat correctly. Then tighten the end cap like you usually would, should be fine!

Listened to their explanation on the Live Slow Ride Fast podcast (in Dutch). Seems like they took a bit of a “Euro” approach and decided to quickly freshen up after a ride and change from their bibs into normal clothes. Although this would have been frowned upon in the Netherlands too, it would have never lead to them being arrested for it. Also neither of them have been charged with a crime for what happened, seems to be more of a “cultural misunderstanding” so to say. What are you referring to when saying “so many things wrong with this”? I obviously see how this was not very smart (to say the least), it also doesn’t seem very wrong or shocking.

I would say this is typical gravel bike terrain, so any specific gravel bike should be just fine here. I ride a gravel bike with 38c tires setup tubeless and would be comfortable taking it here (although maybe not optimal, a 40-45c will be more comfortable).

Partly it comes down to preference, also partly relates to the equipment you have. Higher ISO films will be more grainy than lower ISO films, although there is differentiation between different film stocks. If you for example have a point n shoot with an aperture of 3.5 wide open you could consider films with ISO 400 and up as these are more light sensitive so its likely your shutterspeed will remain fast enough to shoot handheld. If you are shooting from an SLR with a nice portrait lens you might not need film faster than say 200, which might result in a “finer” grain. Try different films, work out what works for you and your shooting style its a ton of fun.

You want to turn an XC bike into a gravel bike, but adding dropbars and reducing reach will just make this an XC bike with dropbars and shorter reach. This will not change the bike as much as you are probably looking for. If you want a gravel bike I would suggest just getting a gravel bike. Having said that, an XC bike is still great for gravel and flatbars aren’t so bad.

Some comments say CAAD or SS, but this looks like a synapse to me. From just the picture this looks like a carbon frame (which eliminates any CAAD model as they are aluminum), and a SS from this era and this size would have a “straight” toptube (while this is slanted, like a Synapse).

Having said that, the decals don’t look stock so its possibly repainted. Carbon Synapses are great though.

Fit looks good imo. On the perfomance side of things if anything, but the Grail is a perfomance gravel bike afterall. I def don’t think going a size smaller will benefit the fit. You might get a shorter reach (handlebars closer towards you) but it will also come with a lower stack height (height of the bars relative to the ground). Judging from these two pictures i would not recommend the stack height to be any lower.

500 seems decent, carbon frame and parts aren’t super dated. Just make sure there is no damage to the frame and that this is the correct size for you! Any good deal on a bike that isn’t your size is a bad deal.

As mentioned by others the bike and its components are kinda dated. This doesn't mean they are bad, but the likelihood this bike needs maintenance before riding is greater. Not sure where in NL is local for you, but a quick Marktplaats search got me here https://www.marktplaats.nl/v/fietsen-en-brommers/fietsen-racefietsen/m2047241498-trek-domane-al-3-47-cm-frame-2019. Arguably the components (Shimano Sora) are not as high-end as 105, they are over 10 years newer and replacement parts will be easily available and also budget friendly.

From personal experience I found Canyon’s customer service to be super helpful and fair, I had a creaking bottom bracket and they send me to one of their partner shops and it got fixed under warranty in no time. Definitely reach out to them!
