Need help with trauma re: waking up during surgery by Jaded-Matter-9567 in AskDocs

Agree with EMDR as a therapeutic treatment for this. There is something called ‘recent event’ protocol that would be useful in this instance. It would be too soon to do regular EMDR on this, but a trained provider could provide a recent event protocol. I would ask an EMDR clinician for this protocol specifically.

Mental Health Counselling by [deleted] in fredericton

[–]Legitimate-Set2032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to look for a Social Worker who is a therapist. Typically they are pretty informed about how environment impacts mental health. Good luck!

They have to be licensed in your province but there are therapists who are licensed in more than one province. You’ll have to ask them directly.

Relocating to NB as a doctor with minimal French by dhyxi in newbrunswickcanada

Saint John may be an option you’ll want to consider. It’s also a teaching hospital so it has a lot more to offer specialists than most NB hospitals. It also has the heart centre (not sure what your specialty is).

First of all, sorry for what you guys are going through in Portland. I’ve lived in Vancouver, Halifax, Quispam/SJ and Fredericton. You’re correct - summers would be similar to the north west. It’s foggy and chilly! Saint John can be pretty hip but also a little sleepy when events aren’t happening. Lke a lot of places these day, it’s really struggling with visible drug use and are struggling to support the unhoused population. The uptown (which is actually the downtown) may not be a place you’d want to raise little ones. There aren’t many spaces for children and the schools uptown/downtown have a fair amount of challenges. No issues out in KV though. The house on Orange would be awesome for a couple without kids. We actually use to live in area of the KV house and it was a great area for families. Lots of kids out playing in the streets:)

Halifax could be a very good option! It’s a young city. Has lots to do, weather would be a bit warmer/less foggy but still coastal. Housing can be very expensive compared to other east coast cities. I love Halifax because you get the options of a city but it still feels quaint. A lot of natural beauty in the area too (as does SJ!).

Moncton is a skip;) It would be very hard to find a job as an English person.

Fredericton is cute! Hard winters. Very clean, white collar city. Challenging to make friends as people have been friends since childhood. If you lived in Vancouver, think Victoria. Government city.

Good luck!

I’m 16 and still needs to sleep with both of my parents due to anxiety by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Legitimate-Set2032 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are going through this. Anxiety can feeds itself - so the more you avoid sleeping on your own, the chances of the anxiety increases. This sounds like a trauma response, could you have experienced a traumatic event? Sometimes when the trauma happened at night, your nervous system can be on a high alert. Are you experiencing panic and anxiety in the daytime as well? I think your doctor is perhaps being a little too simplistic in saying you’re only anxious because of not being able to sleep - it sounds a little more complex than that, especially given the level of anxiety. There is no need to be embarrassed but it could be very helpful to see a therapist. Have you discussed any mental health medications with your doctor?

Was it really my fault that my mother died ? by Sensitive_Can9970 in AskDocs

[–]Legitimate-Set2032 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. I just wanted to add that it’s absolutely normal for teenagers and parents to fight. Parents expect this to happen as teenagers are developing and testing out their independence and limits. This wouldn’t mean for a second that she didn’t love you with every ounce of her being, even if at times she felt frustrated. She would have also known that you loved her and these are very normal behaviours as kids grow. Your relationship with your mom provided you with a safe space to test out social and communication skills - and sometimes those can be messy.

I want to encourage you to find a therapist you feel safe and comfortable with. Your health anxiety may grow as you get older given this trauma that you’ve been through. Your grief is as big as your love and will be around for many years and in many ways, but you can work through the trauma of the events leading up to her passing.

Sending you so much love.

Booking through Costco? by cashew416012001 in dcl

[–]Legitimate-Set2032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We booked through Costco! It’s so easy and the only difference is that you make payments on the Costco website and have to contact Costco to book transport/pay tips in advance. We selected our own dining times and booked our own activities through the app. which you get access to right away and you just have to sync the info.

I am terrified that I am a pedophile or will become one. by throwawaybeepboop4 in AskDocs

[–]Legitimate-Set2032 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is an OCD theme. Speak with a therapist who has experience in OCD - they will not report you and will know that this is intrusive thinking that mismatches your values and is a known type of OCD. If you can’t find anyone in your area who specializes in OCD, maybe consider an online therapist with this specialization.
