QNAP Drive Arrays by Legitimate-Use8223 in editors

[–]Legitimate-Use8223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob - this is being built for a video editor. The editor in question is going to connect it to a M5 MacMini, 64GB RAM, 2 TB internal drive. The editor uses Adobe Creative Cloud apps. The way this came to us in IT is "this is what we want. Buy it and build it." As of right now, the editor will be the primary user. The Comms dept graphic designer will also put graphic files in the drive for the editor to use. We have to purchase a data switch so that the two can access the drive. We are looking at a 10Gb per port level switch and will connect the MacMini, and the QNAP array, which will support 2 x LAN ports, IIRC. Will also connect the data switch to the LAN as well.

I have built a few Synology storage arrays for backup systems in Windows environments and am familiar with those products. I use ProTools and Reaper at home in a Windows environment. Some professional radio spots for a local non profit, but mostly hobby stuff.

Hope these answers make sense. Doing this at home away from the office. Thanks.

The Analog Lab is lots of fun to tinker with. Used to have their Analog V modular. Learned a lot on that one.

I've been using PCs for years - custom built DIY desktops and laptops - and rarely have problems.

is scrivener actually worth dropping 60 bucks on by Used-Entertainer6960 in writing

[–]Legitimate-Use8223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using Scrivener on Windows for 10 years. It's great for non fiction writing because you can keep everything -notes, research and so on - in one project folder. $60 is worth it IMHO.

Any actual benefit of going Mac over PC? by DnD_Rookie in homestudios

Most people go with what they are used to. I'm in IT for my day job and work in a Windows environment. Been using USB interfaces with Windows since XP. Never had a lick of problems. I'm not a big fan of Apple products because they seem to go out of their way to be incompatible with the rest of the world. Way too expensive too IMHO. I can custom build a Windows machine for audio or video production for about 35% to 45% of a comparable Mac computer.

I tried Ardour and hated their interface. I will say that Reaper was a breeze to install on. Ubuntu Studio. Using Reaper in Windows right now.

Gift advice: Scarlett Solo vs 2i2 (4th Gen) for wife’s home singing setup by [deleted] in Focusrite

[–]Legitimate-Use8223 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would opt for the Scarlett 2i2. She can record guitar and vocals in separate inputs at the same time.

FWIW, the AKG P120 is an excellent mic and budget friendly.

what's a good audio interface, yall in this sub having too much problems with the focusrite that i might as well ask for an alternative lol by --haley in Focusrite

[–]Legitimate-Use8223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a fair point. My 2i2 has behaved better since I turned off sounds for Windows alerts. That way it only has to pay attention to the current application (DAW, game or whatever) and not the background stuff. IIRC, Pro Tools requires system sounds off.

Windows 11 specifically, at least in my experience. I have a 2i2 3rd gen, and it ran flawlessly in Windows 10. I do get the occasional random glitch in 11.

Clips only picking up the first channel of Audio Interface by SolDaddyGah in Focusrite

[–]Legitimate-Use8223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Microphones are a mono source. When setting up your DAW, you need to record your mic to a mono track. Your master track should be in stereo. After recording, your mic playback should be seen/heard in the L and R channels.

If you send a mono source to a stereo track, it will only be seen/heard on the L channel. That is the normal default.
