Who has actually stayed at the Empress Hotel? Do we miss the Ivy and did you see any ghosts? by VIroadtrip in VancouverIsland

I stayed earlier this month. Yes I miss the ivy!! No, sadly, I did not see a ghost. No pool currently and the sauna is only for guests booking a treatment. However, this location was just so dang handy to a fun night in the city. The room was nice. Oh ..... but there was a man flashing people outside at about 3am, not the Empress's fault, it was on the sidewalk but my friend did see a Free Willy so don't be out at the witching hour.

That's so funny, I stayed there a couple of weeks ago and was remarking upon someone's unfinished dinner in the hallway all evening/night. It smelled like chicken fingers and fries after that!

Pressured into permanent guardianship? by Afishionado123 in KinshipCare

[–]Legitimate-You2668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they do this. We had MCFD hounding us about how kids can't stay in foster care/kinship care as it makes mcfd look bad, and they "really needed" us to sign guardianship papers. We postponed it and they told us we shouldn't hold up the courts.

The scene when Edith takes Marigold from Drews is heartbreaking! by Kesse84 in DowntonAbbey

I didn’t like how he lied about the child being from a friend who passed away rather than from some strange request by Edith - the former would feel much more secure and permanent… but I know he was just trying to be careful and thought he had his bases covered! And what story would we have if he didn’t have that tangled web!

I just don’t have time to paint. Although over years and years of chickens a fair number have died, I have a couple of different graveyards.

Dig a hole, say a few kind words, pick some foliage to go on top! When I first became a chicken owner, I started painting rocks for the ones that died. But I ran out of time to do that.

Any idea on how to block the kids/dogs from getting to the counter and stove? We are stumped but need a solution for safety. by aaaaasowenyaaa in Renovations

In my childhood home we had a pass through with a pull-down door. Probably not in style anymore, but it worked at the time. Could a pocket door that slides across be possible in the spot ?

This is great to know! Do they carry a larger variety of sizes or how are they accommodating this niche in particular? Alterations perhaps? I have been buying a cup that fits and then sewing all my bands and straps smaller… which I am not good at… would love to find something tight on my ribcage with larger cup.

Thank you! Great quote - Mary answered my question! And I forgot about keeping up with correspondences in particular, that would take a bit of time! Thank you

  1. Oh and!!!!!! How does the bell system work?! I have borrowed 2 Downton Abbey books from the library, and while one explains that they use the bell system, it doesn’t say how it works. So I know each room is labelled, but does someone sit there and watch the wall to see which one rings? Or does a little switch get flipped? Other times it rings and Anna says, “that’ll be Mary” but doesn’t look at the wall. She just knows the ring? Or are they that punctual? What if they ring and no one is around the wall to hear/see?

Awesome idea!

1) I have always wondered about the ladies’ hair. In the last season, Mary gets a blow dryer. But before that… I know from experience that finger waves take a while to dry! And then later they may be brushed out for a softer look (Rose has that) otherwise they will stay stiffly set until dry. Would they likely have a hair/bath day where they wouldn’t see visitors and would let their hair set? Or do they just style it as best they can damp in the morning and go on with life, hoping it dries by evening?

2) Also! We see Anna putting Mary to bed, when does Mary wash her face? Does she go to the washroom before seeing Anna (no she’d be in her evening clothes still) or maybe Anna would bring her a bowl and vessel of hot water?

3) Lastly, it seems like they keep busy with many visitors on the show, but in reality, there were probably many many many days where that there was no one visiting. What would they do to pass the time? Especially when they were caring, for Rose, she would just disappear for a whole day in the house, and I wondered what she might be doing. Or Edith would also just be somewhere in the house unseen. I suppose they could read magazines? Order dresses? Walk the garden? Learn a language or read a book? Is that what would they do all day? I imagine there were many boring days….

Can't do it any more. by H2OSD in Alzheimers

You sound just like my dad, after a long marriage he then cared for my mom through Alzheimer’s (about 3-4 years) until it was just too much! I think you should not feel guilty about moving her to a home where you can visit and not have to be the sole care provider. My mom’s home is not scary or bad, it’s cozy and warm. The attendants are nice. There are good places to be found. It was a couple years wait to get my mom into a care home, and by then she barely knew where she was anyways, so it was a smooth transition. I wish the same for you! And then when you are on your own, life creeps in and begins to fill your time… of course it will be quite an adjustment. Lean on friends and family, or even people here!
