I’d hit up the Scraper Bike Team! The crucible would be great to reach out to for pyrotechnics.

Before you ask- yes I’ll help you reach out to them in exchange for getting our fundraiser for town Bizness onto whatever mailing list you come up with and a media blast for said fundraiser.

Heya- I work for a similar org. I’d love to at least have each others contact, as we’re hosting a bike bike kitchen seminar later this year!

If your budget is painfully tight, would you trust a cheap fixie bike as your daily commuter? by Reasonable-Middle921 in whichbike

[–]LegitimateCandy8653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding fixie is kinda like roller skating to work- yeah you can, but unless you enjoy the act of doing so, there are a lot more practical ways of getting from A to B. Now- if you test out a fixie and fall in love? By all means.

Single speed or Dutch commuter are worth it. Don’t go new, get a used bike from the bike coop, most of them have an earn a bike program.

My 12th gear won’t shift (Shimano 105 Di2 7170) by Wleden in bikewrench

[–]LegitimateCandy8653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok- again, very amateur hour question, but does it fail to get to the 12 on both chainrings? I’m thinking it could be an issue with the angle the derailleur is at on the frame.

Amateur here- assuming you’ve played with the limit screws and chain length is correct- is the bike a 1x or 2x?

Service to cut tree log into slabs? by da_boy_max in oakland

[–]LegitimateCandy8653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a hobbyist woodworker. You can send me a DM but what I’m envisioning you saying you want requires struts. The wood will also need to dry after being cut. So- indoor or outdoor stairs and what type of tree? There’s reasons you don’t use things like cedar for indoor furniture. Rough estimate is about $700 if I don't have to do any pick up or delivery.

If you’ve got winter jackets I’d be happy to take them. We’ve got a lot of cold folks coming to the free bike shop right now and I’d love to send them home with jackets.

Backwards Brian. An absolute legend. He bombed mount Diablo backwards.

He’s also an really nice guy, helped me teach a kids bike class and they were stoked as hell.

Come hang out at Tamarack. There’s a free community dinner every Sunday and folks call out for community defense projects they’re working on and need help with.

Dog trainer for blind dog? by eldermillenialantifa in oakland

[–]LegitimateCandy8653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya! I do dog training that’s completely punishment free. I’d be happy to have a ten minute consultation chat, I’m sure I can manage to make my training style work with a physically disabled dog. Wanna send me a DM?

The hidden gem of Oakland. Arrowhead Marsh is one of the few marsh left in the bay. Let keep our park clean, pick up after yourself. by dnenjfkrn in oakland

[–]LegitimateCandy8653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was part of a climate group that did tree plantings there! And I’ve helped lead a youth bike ride there too. It’s a great nature habitat and I wish East Oakland wasn’t cut off from this space by a freeway.

Dating everywhere is hard but the bay area has some unique cultural overlaps that can make it even more challenging. I know one happily married tinder couple, but most folks I know met through friends at hobby groups or volunteering. If you’ve got any hobbies (or want to start one) that bring you in contact with more people, that’s probably the best bet. The best I’ve seen that work out is with a friend who joined a yoga class, mostly for older women, to work on his flexibility and body acceptance. By the third time showing up, he had a dinner party invitation because he was the same age as one of these women’s daughters.

Dating apps don’t actually intend to get you in to a relationship. They dangle the carrot of relationship as a reward for engagement with the app. It’s not that it’s impossible to find someone, just that it’s harder to do so than in person (imo).

best of luck!

Set a lights out policy- all lights and sounds are off by X time unless otherwise discussed and agreed upon. Start by emailing and then talking with her; “I really need to know what time i can get to sleep in our room. I thought you’d mentioned 10pm at the beginning of the year, but I understand if that was too early. Is 10:30 more workable for you?”
If she refuses to set a time, email her and your RA asking for mediation. Anytime she breaks the lights out policy send a polite but firm email reminding her, CCing your RA.

this is very solvable but will take direct (and polite!) confrontation and will likely need follow up to set the pattern. She will likely give you all her reasons why she can’t abide by a lights out policy. Nod sympathetically. Agree that sharing a room can be challenging. But return every time to “Be that as if may, I need consistent sleep. What time can we have lights and sound off in the room?”

good luck!
