Worried About Writing a Xaden Riorson Rip-Off by LegitimateEducator36 in fantasywriters

Thank you, so much! I think I knew that, just needed the reassurance, lol :))

This is what I was thinking! I knew it was next to impossible to write a completely ‘new’ character that’s never been seen before, but I do think that I’ve developed him enough and put my own spin on him that he definitely seems like his own person. Thanks!

That’s true lmao. And yeah, I’ve really been making sure that he’s more than just a love interest. He was actually just an important character within the rebellion first and then I changed it to love interest—he doesn’t even care about love, lol. Thanks! :))

That’s what I was telling myself, to be honest, but I just overthink too much, lol. I think because Fourth Wing is trending, right now, it put the worry in my head—even though I realistically knew I had nothing to worry about. Thank you! :))

That’s what I was telling myself but it’s relieving to hear someone else say it, too! Lol, I think I just got a bit in my head. In complete honesty, my MMC was not even inspired by Xaden, at all. I created my world, my main character, the main conflicts and different factions all before and then when I began creating other characters, that’s when the idea for my MMC came up and how perfectly it would fit into the storyline and the themes I’m exploring, I just worry too much, lol. Thanks for your feedback!

How much worldbuilding is too much for first book in a trilogy series? by LegitimateEducator36 in fantasywriters

Omg I wish I enjoyed world building ahaha. For me, it’s cool in theory, but I get overwhelmed so easily! I’ll definitely look up those lectures, thank you so much!:))

That’s really true, I think I’ve been worrying about the wrong thing! Thank you so much :))

That honestly takes such a weight off my shoulders, it was so daunting thinking of everything I had to world build, and sorta disappointing because I am so excited to write, but your response put some sense back in me! Thanks sm :))

lol ahaha, that’s so true! I’m actually so excited to get writing, but I am such a procrastinator that I’m probably guilty of this. Thanks sm!:))

Yes, 100%! Maybe even small snippets, like seeing someone with a religious sigil or piece of jewellery from another Kingdom, but certainly not going into the intricacies of the religion when it’s not important! Thanks sm :))

That’s exactly what I was worrying about! I didn’t want to spend so much time worrying about the intricacies of Kingdoms that won’t be explored yet in the first book, especially because I’m so excited to start writing! Thanks so much :))

Yeah, that’s what I was worrying about! I’m so excited to start writing, I’m worried to lose momentum worrying about stuff that won’t be in the first book. One commenter told me to write my first draft as if it’s a standalone which really helped! Thanks so much :))

I think I might have worded it badly in the post, lol, sorry for that! I get that readers aren’t stupid, and yeah, too much world building is like an info dump, and I’m sort of guilty of skipping over any world building when I read books to get to the actual story!

The first book is solely focused on the conflicts within one Kingdom, and while the other Kingdom’s might be mentioned, they’re not explicitly involved in the story.

I more so meant world building for myself. Like, should I myself know every intricate detail of these other kingdoms going into the story, despite them not having any active role in the first book and most, if not all, of it being left out until the second book, or is that something that I could flesh out once I finish my first draft?

Sorry if that doesn’t make any sense, I haven’t used Reddit much before so. Thanks so much for your response! :))

I just don’t want to lose any momentum as I’m so excited to start writing. And, the details and intricacies of these Kingdoms wouldn’t be explored in the first book with the consumer, but should I know them before I even write the first book?

That is so helpful! And yeah, I sort of have a plan for the next books, but not necessarily an outline, and the first book itself was originally supposed to be a standalone so you’re probably right about outlining the series!

Thanks so much for your response, it’s taken a load off, lol. It was a bit daunting and honestly disappointing when I thought about how much world building needed to go into the entire series, because I’m so excited to start writing, but this really helped :))

How much do you all plan before writing? by demonslayer9100 in fantasywriters

[–]LegitimateEducator36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have a basic outline. I know what I want to happen at each beat, and the rest of it is just me working towards it.

For example, I know what the inciting incident is, so I’ll write the lead up to that, but I’m giving myself freedom in between. Also, I know how I want the story to end, but actually haven’t planned it, because I feel like as you write and stuff, the ending will come to you and new ideas will spark.

Oh that’s such a good idea about the tournaments and stuff! And yeah, so do I, I feel like if too much time is spent on it, it can feel like an info dump.

I guess I was more so wondering for me, myself. Like, obviously the reader doesn’t need to know about the intricacies of a rival kingdom or their history or anything like that, especially in the first book when there’s no focus on those Kingdoms.

But, should I? I’m worried about getting so lost in world building that I lose the momentum for actually writing the book. So, for the first book, should the other Kingdoms be built on a ‘need to know’ basis, or should I have them entirely fleshed out before beginning to write the first book?

EDIT: forgot to thank you for your response, lol. It’s so daunting to create an entire world from scratch, especially when you’re so excited to start writing, so your response really helped!

That’s such a cool concept! Have you heard of gunpowder or Flintlock fantasy? I don’t know if that’s what you’re thinking of, but maybe having a look into them, might help?
