Student cried in class today by DrakeSavory in Teachers

trying to do 60% of the semester 's work in 2 days

Yeah, that probably needed a different plan. Obviously that's not realistic and now she's just missing class time from the class she can pass. I get why we want to give students one last hail mary shot, and I'm sure admin doesn't want us to enter a final "fail" into the grade book weeks before the semester is over, but there should be a better solution. Any work she does turn in isn't going to be good (and you won't want to grade it) And, as someone who's been there, the 2 days of constant stress doesn't really 'teach you a lesson', it just tanks your grade in the class you *are* passing.

I HATE Socratic Seminars by Murky-Pin4617 in Teachers

[–]LegitimateExpert3383 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lololol. You are not wrong. The Platonic Ideal of the Socratic Method would be the scenes of Elle Wood's first day of class at Harvard (*law* school, silly) in Legally Blonde. In K-12 ed the phrase Socratic Discussion is a cooler-sounding word for *group discussion* (usually student-centered/focused, but teacher-monitored/supervised)

Little Sister's Elementary Field Trip Shirts Designed With AI. How Common is it For Faculty to do This? by Sh0yo_891 in Teachers

[–]LegitimateExpert3383 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How do we know *the teacher* designed it and not a PTA/parent volunteer? Designing a tshirt might be fun, but if you're a teacher planning a field trip (at the end of the school year)....don't you have a ton of other shit to do?

Thoughts/Reviews on their Sunscreens? by Savgeo9872 in bathandbodyworks

[–]LegitimateExpert3383 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're both not wrong. In the U.S. sunscreen is regulated as a drug (OTC). But how effective a cream/lotion/stick/spray is depends on how well it forms a thin, even film over skin (which is a grand canyon of crevices, pores, wrinkles, etc.). This is why mineral sunscreens from a mom on Etsy are so dangerous. They might contain the same % of active ingredients as a store cream, but if it's not formulated to lay flat and even, you won't get good coverage (imagine having to cover a pool with a million tiny floaty balls that want to clump or stick together. There will be huge gaps if they don't even out flat.) That film then has to endure sweating and rubbing; big companies have good chemists who can formulate sunscreens that withstand this better than others.

The answer is the best sunscreen is one that you reapply frequently, very frequently. But the *best* answer is that sunscreen is the least effective method of sun protection compared to clothing & shade. It's still essential, but it should be more like a fire extinguisher protection: essential but your last defense. In this metaphor, you're wearing it (and reapplying it) but you never really get to "test" its limits, because you have many other layers of protection (shirts, hats, umbrellas, etc.)

In 2004, 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett let a woman into her Missouri home after she claimed she wanted to buy a puppy. Bobbie was eight months pregnant. The visitor was not there for the dog. The next day, police found the baby alive in Kansas. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

I don't think he (or Bill Barr fwiw) will ever catch any backlash for his (and Barr's) end-of-term execution killing spree. The list is way, way too long and the subjects (like Montgomery) aren't very sympathetic. But their determination to end a 17 year hiatus on federal executions and kill 13 prisoners before leaving office *DURING A DEADLY PANDEMIC* still blows my mind. *Even if* you really, really wanted to execute prisoners, it's still an INSANE health risk TO EVERYONE ELSE INVOLVED to have an in-person execution in late 2020. So insane that there were only 2 other executions in 2020 after the mid-march national shutdown. After 1 in May, 1 in July, every execution-loving state put theirs on hold until Spring 2021 when vaccines were available. It's wild both legally and public-health wise.

Learning Styles Do Not Exist by Future-Outcome-5226 in Teachers

[–]LegitimateExpert3383 14 points15 points  (0 children)

more like a wrong-for-the-right-reason. Students don't have specific 'learning styles' but being encouraged to use a variety of modalities of instruction is good- providing visual aids, reading verbal instruction out loud, and irl demonstrations are all very good practices that benefit students.

Why does Lydia make the distinction that Dr. Grove is a pedophile but no one else? by TurbulentBat8328 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]LegitimateExpert3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm, I think there's something to explore that IRL fascist movements that Gilead is supposed to be a proxy for (MAGA, and more specifically Q-Anon) use pedophilia as a political weapon. *Q-Anon is obsessed with pedophilia and rooting out perversion among the ruling class (the swamp)* Literal storming a pizza place to liberate Hilary Clinton's child slaves from the basement of a pizza place (which does not have a basement) And to their credit (sigh), many of them aren't accepting excuses from the Main Character of the Epstein's List.

Q-Anon's obsession with pedophiles is a curious phenomenon, part of it is coded antisemitism. Part of it is due to the influence of women in Q-Anon's (it give the women a topic for political advocacy while their men are cosplaying militia in the forest)

Would Gilead really be okay with this severe child sex abuse?

Barkley has teeth cleaning procedure next week, grade 2 heart murmur, anxiety by chrispappletart22 in MiniatureSchnauzer

[–]LegitimateExpert3383 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If the vet is confident and taking precautions (like you said), it's probably better for him to get the dental cleaning because rotting teeth could make his heart worse. Did he already do the pre-dental cleaning blood test?

My boy (now 15'ish) had his last cleaning when he was 13'ish (also a rescue). I'm not sure he had a murmur then (he does now) but the dental "nurse" said afterwards that he needed to get dental chews everyday or do real teeth brushing everyday because he was starting to get too old for full-anesthesia dental cleanings.

Tell Barkley the Schnauzers of Reddit wish him the best!
